I once passed a Tiger Snake in the blue mountains in OZ with just half a bar width, I rode down a hill in a forest and saw the snake just a second before I passed it. It lifted its head up but I was too fast, so she could not bite me
i work for royal mail so early starts, been there a few years and over time i've gotten use to taking my bike out in the morning before work (i get 100% and work can have whats left)
last summer one of my friends decided to tag along on my single track route, everything was fine until the final stretch which is in a field that takes us home i'm about 10 meters in front and here him crash behind me....stop and turn around to see the fork snapped off his bike and my mate laying on the ground...he said a badger just walked onto the trail right in front of him and he had no time to stop, he was banged up pretty good his bike was completely destroyed we stayed and looked for the badger for 10 minuets but couldn't find it guess it was better off than my mate was
Just about stopped before a rattlesnake on the trail in North Carolina... Had to shoo bears on same trip.
A troop of baboons with the huge alpha male leading them walking the trail in Cape Town was a scary head on... Huge canine teeth (afterwards, a local said to just slowly keep riding toward them and at the last minute they will move out the way... Next encounter I did that... It works... Game of chicken basically!).
Also SA, had a boomslang (very poisonous snake) strike at me while riding through a tunnel of vegetation... They are tree snakes. It missed and hissed. I thought initially I had a puncture... Hisssssss

Riding through longleat in the dark is always a mind game... 'what if a lion has escaped' 🤔😂

once I passed a pack of silver foxes in Ireland.
Thanks for highlighting my mountain lion encounter! All the talk about snakes made me think of the many encounters with rattlesnakes here in southern California. A couple of times when I've come across large rattlesnakes stretched across the trail but I'm going too fast to stop, I've had to hop over them. There's always a moment afterwards when you mentally check to make sure the snake didn't strike, but it's always been fine.
In case anyone does encounter dangerous animals out on the trail and actually wants to know what to do (from my former experience of doing wilderness search and rescue in the Pacific Northwest of the US):
Cougar (mountain lion) - Stand still, facing the cat. Do not look it in the eyes or make aggressive movements towards it. Make loud human noises, like yelling, and make yourself larger by raising your arms or spreading your jacket. If it does attack, fight back.
Black bear - Stand still and face the bear. Just like a cougar, avoid direct eye contact or aggression, but make loud noises and make yourself as big as possible. If it attacks, fight back.
Brown bear/grizzly bear - DO NOT RUN. Do not make eye contact with the bear. Do not approach the bear. If the bear is not approaching you, WALK away slowly. Wave your arms and speak quietly so the bear knows you are human. If the bear charges, DO NOT RUN. You cannot outrun the bear. You cannot outride the bear. You also cannot fight the bear. If the bear attacks, curl into a ball or lie on your stomach and play dead. DO NOT FIGHT, do not make noise. If it loses interest and leaves, wait until you are certain it is gone from the area before getting up to look for help.
Wolf - Make yourself as big as possible and stare directly at the wolf (or wolves). Do not turn your back on the wolf or run away. With wolves, you DO want to make eye contact and act aggressive. Wave your arms, clap your hands, yell at the wolf, etc. If it approaches, back away slowly while continuing to make as much noise as aggressively as possible. You can climb a tree to get away from it, since wolves cannot climb. If it attacks, fight back.
Coyote - Don't turn your back to the animal. Yell at it and wave your arms. If it approaches, you can throw stuff at it (rocks and sticks, not your bike). If it attacks, fight back.
Moose - The moose will probably not attack you, and it's best to wait at a good distance for the moose to move on. They can attack if startled or threatened, however. If they start to approach you, put something solid (like a tree or vehicle) between you and the moose. If they charge, run behind said solid object. If a moose successfully charges you and knocks you over, curl up, cover your neck and head with your arms, and hold still. Wait until it's gone to get up.
Venomous snakes - Be aware of what venomous snakes you might encounter in the area where you're biking and keep an eye out for them. If you spot one, give it a wide berth. I'm most familiar with rattlesnakes (I once accidentally stepped on one in the dark, which was terrifying) - with rattlesnakes, don't throw anything at them as they may strike at it and move closer. If you're bitten by any snake, the general protocol is: Move away from the snake and find a place to sit down. Stay calm. If you know what type of snake bit you, remember that. If you don't know what type of snake bit you, DO NOT GO AFTER THE SNAKE. It is never a good idea to chase a snake down to identify it after you have been bitten. (For those asking who would do such a thing: you'd be surprised.)
Hold the injured limb below the level of your heart. Remove any constrictive clothing, such as watches or rings, from the affected area. Do not attempt to cut or suck the venom out. Do not apply a tourniquet or other compression. No first aid is better than bad first aid. Try to stay calm and avoid raising your heart rate, as this will make the venom circulate faster. If you can, call for help. If you are alone and are not able to call for help, start walking slowly towards the nearest place where you CAN access or call for help. I would advise against riding out, even slowly, because many types of snake venom can cause symptoms like dizziness or loss of sensation in the bitten limb, which could significantly impair your bike handling skills, and the last thing you need is to crash after being bitten by a snake.
Alligators - I've never been anywhere that alligators live, but I did look it up for completeness since they're mentioned here. Generally, give them a wide berth and back away slowly if you happen upon one. If it rushes you, though, run away (or ride, if you're already on the bike - don't stop to mount up) in a STRAIGHT LINE. Do NOT zigzag. Alligators are very fast, but only over extremely short distances, so your chances are good. If it does catch and bite you, fight back by hitting it in the eyes and snout.

I have come across 40+ black bears while riding and all but 3 ran away as fast as they could. One just stood there and looked at me. 2 charged me stomping their paws but stopped 10 meters or so short of me. I just get off the bike, put the bike between me and the bear and talk to them. 😀
I’ve nearly run over more rattlesnakes and copperheads than I can count. Only one took a strike at me.
Most dangerous encounter were 2 big off leash dogs at Tsali. They wanted a piece of me and the owner had no control.
That Banshee was a mess. It getting a super nice over the Nukeproof is crazy
Just started my North Idaho, USA ride, heard galloping, coming from up the trail. I thought, "this trail is way to steep for a horse to run down", only to look up and see a Grizzly coming around the corner, running at full speed away from a mountain biker behind him. I was literally bracing for impact, when he managed to dig in and make a hard turn away from me only six paces away.
I get followed by coyotes once in a while, but it’s rare for them to attack people, so no worries. I have also seen rattlesnakes, javelinas, and bobcats on the trail at Phoenix South Mountain Park in Arizona.
I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada 🇨🇦. I wish we are aloud to carry hand guns for self-defense in the wild only against animals that attacked us. The only guns we can carry are short shotguns or small rifles. Not practical while biking
@@ChristianPareATLAS your government sucks, love Canada, have family there, but the T man is bad! We can carry anything we want in Arizona. I carry a 10mm in bear/cougar country.
AT the end of the 2021 season I came flying around a blind bend on a single track (which lead to a dog park) and came nose to nose with a mountain lion on the trail. We were both equally surprised to meet each other but he jumped into the woods pretty quick and ran off. I was only 200ft away from the main trail and when I came too I saw people walking their dogs and told them to get out of there before their dog became dinner for the mountain lion. Definitely the scariest moment in my mountain biking experience.
I've startled an 100+ kilo wild boar. His grunt was so loud it rocked my chest. They're actually super scary if you p**s them off 😂. Anyway I have a wild boar "experience" once a month. They can be really dangerous, there suprising agile and fast. They can even jump 3 feet in the air. Ive also had wolf encounters BUT nothing compares to UK seagulls!!!! There savage!
When I lived in Hawaii they would frequently run across the trail in front of me or I’d hear them crashing through the bushes nearby. They can definitely be scary.
Yeh I know, those buggers will nick your chips if you ain't careful.😅
Aaaaaand that's why riding and camping in the UK is the best! 😆 A few years back I was gravel riding in Glacier NP with six friends (thankfully) when we came over a rise and encountered a grizzly. Thankfully she was fairly chill and wandered off once we made enough noise, but it was one of the more intense moments of my life for sure.

Early morning riding in the Isle of Skye a few years back, I watched a pair of golden Eagles flying for a few minutes. They were beautiful
This has to be one of the best vids you guys have done! Freaky for me cause I live in New Zealand and we don’t have any crazy dangerous animals. I’ve seen deer/stage, goats, pigs and S&#t loads of rabbits but that’s about it!
The mountain lion being pinned under the bike happened in WA on tokul creek (Snoqualmie area) it is 5miles behind where I live! There is a lot of mountain lion activity. I have footage of 3 of them walking in front of my garage at night, they are scary!
I have only had ducks, wallabies, the occasional kangaroo, rabbits and one red bellied black snake sunning itself whilst riding. I see more animals driving than riding and have unfortunately hit one big kangaroo. I have had a wedge tailed eagle gliding down right past the front of my Ute and those talons definitely make you want a bit of a barrier between you and it. They're much bigger than you think when they're up close and personal.
We get deer, fox, coyotes, squirrels, and black bear here in CT. Animals I’m mostly afraid of on the trail? The unleashed aggressive dogs that owners say is “friendly“
My second night on my first bikepacking tour was spent afraid in my dispersed campsite from hearing a bear growl a couple times. campgrounds from now on in my future.
What i've learned from reading into animals for photography and such, in most cases it's humans getting too close too quickly to animals with cubs.
Of course, with animals like snakes etc. there is also just that statistical chance.
To minimise the risk, get something like the "TrailBell" i think it's called. A small bell that you can release while in the woods or in crowded areas and lock (so it's not constantly ringing) if you're just casually pedalling along somewhere with good sight.
Also, if you know that it's e.g. the season where bears have fresh cubs, maybe avoid their usual spots or the most vulnerable day times (often dusk or dawn). Could be hard in some areas of the world, but at least try it.
And regarding disturbing the animals, nightrides are an absolut catastrophy!
I saw a slow worm at Woburn Bike Park. Other than the odd heron or kite, that’s about the most exciting thing I’ve seen.
Black bears are quite common in the Eastern US. I’ve been crossing paths with them for some 40 years. You just stop at a safe distance and the bear will walk away.
I remember riding near Taos NM. I had a bear run down onto the trail in front of me and thankfully run away from me. I was alone and nobody really knew where I was.
Deer almost took me out a couple of times. Rattlesnakes and tarantulas are plenty in socal and az
I saw an alligator along a trail at Loyce Harpe Park in Lakeland, FL. I'm from Ohio, so it was quite thrilling.
I saw a black bear about an 1/8 of a mile ahead on the Ohio to Erie trail in October. But it ran off pretty quick.
Dogs are the most common and scariest thing I encounter. A gravel rider in our state lost her leg to a dog attack recently.
I've seen porcupines, rattle snakes, black bears, the most aggressive by far is the untrained domesticated dog 😂
I have come across rattle snakes, bears, bull elk, and mountain lions. I am in Colorado.

I've run into 3 black bears, 4 rattle snakes, 1 coyote, and 1 bald eagle. Not run into, but came real close to them. The only ones who stuck around were the rattlers. 2 diamond backs and 2 timbers. There has been deer and cattle, but didn't really count them.
I’m in Idaho I’ve had snakes,bears,deer,elk,moose,badgers,foxes,chipmunks,squirrels,grouse,sheep and cougars in or near the trail while riding. Nothing scary has ever happened. Just wild and surprising.
A pheasant staked out our house during mating season a couple years ago , it wouldn’t let us out the house hammering all the windows. They have no self-preservation unlike mammals, no matter what you did, stamping out or 😊anything it would not go away just kept attacking

Multiple eastern brown snakes, tiger snakes and red bellied black snakes, Roos jumping out in front so you chase then down the run.
The only predator I’m scared of here in New Mexico is the mountain lion.
In my life I have encountered bear, deer, skunks, porcupines, turkeys, buzzards, racoons, opossums, fire ants, bees nests, snakes, foxes, coyotes, bobcats, mountain lions, and even a 6 foot iguana while riding in Puerto Rico.
Riding along my local trail in Ontario Canada and came across a huge coyote running parallel to me about 10m away while going downhill. I initially thought the coyote was a wolf because it was big.
The coyote wasn't chasing or attacking, it was just running in the same direction.
Ive encountered plenty of bears. Every single one of them ran off. Far more scared of me. However Moose are super scary they do not run. Moose stand off with you. I've been charged by moose more then once. Thank goodness all the Moose called off the charge. Mostly in Algonquin Park in Northern Ontario Canada

Carrying bear spray can be effective . . . IF . . . you can carry it fast enough!!!!!!!
A boar is not just a hairy pig. They’re very aggressive if they protecting their young and can kill a human. I’ve seen them a few times here in Tuscany, and heard wolves in the woods when riding during the day and at night…. Respect the animals and give them their space.

You might have mentioned the most dangerous, and common, animal danger in the woods - Suicidal Squirrels! how many crashes have happened because a kind-hearted rider tried to miss one of those?

I live and work on a game farm in the north of South Africa. My friend and I had an encounter the other day with a few buffalo, of which the one started hooving the soil with its head low...lucky it did not charge.

Deer, all the time...black bear, twice...snakes, most of the time...box turtles, most of the time. None of my encounters have been exciting but I was trapped between four deer(two on either side of me) on a really narrow trail, we all stared at each other for a minute or so and then they all scampered off, I try really hard to miss the turtles.
Here in southern Ontario my worst was being attacked by a family of bluejays 😅 there's lots of suicide squirrels and guarder snakes
I swear Urban Squirrels dare each other to run in front of my bike...ha!!
In 2016, I was there outside Glacier NP when the head park ranger of security was killed by a bear. He was riding a trail near West Glacier in the lead with another rider (brother-in-law?) and went around a corner directly into the bear. The ranger was armed with a handgun; but, didn't have the opportunity to draw his weapon. Huge impact on the area as locals found out about his death.

Most crazy animal attack I witnessed is a buzzard-attack on abiker in front of me, protecting it's nest. And I once biked through a pack of youthfull boars, but they were very relaxed and minding their own business.
Nothing brings out the inner ninja like riding though a big spiders web and wondering to yourself, where was the spider. We have a lot of nasty tree dwelling spider in Aus that love to build across trails.
Got bitten by an old black lab in Stanmer Park. Really hurts there. Thing was hanging of my calf as I was pumping away. Did use my bike as a barrier for a bit.

Once had an tawny owl flying in front of me along a trail. Ran over an Adder :-( . Dive bombed by a green woodpecker and had a badger running alongside on a night ride, scary! and saved a lost ferret on thr trails :-) "DANGEROUS UK"

Encountered with group of wild boars years ago, & trust me, they ran like a speedy Lamborghini, imagine getting struck by them, yeakksss...
That's why I carry bear spray, and when I'm deep in the mountains I carry a sidearm, just in case the spray doesn't work.

Just on the weekend saw some wild boar on my ride, they were seriously huge beasts, if they want can kill you easily, in my hometown in sudamerica is not uncommon finding poisonous snakes on your ride

Grizzlies get bikers in my area now & again. I carry bear spray in my bottle cage. Wolves & mtn loins scare me more.
Worst of all is when hikers think a MTB park is okay for them to use!

A male wild boar with tusks can quite easily kill a human with a goring to a vital part or seriously injured by goring you. Keep away, especially if with piglets, that can be territorial and Highly dangerous

Cocker spaniels are the best trail dogs
I resently had one barking along my side for near 1km on a city cycle path. It's owner was fuming, I found it hilarious it ran so far just barking at me! 😂
Rich, don't want to burst your bubble but snakes are venomous not poisonous. Venom is injected into a person, whereas poison is typically injested

I ran into three cubs on the trail they scattered ran up trees didn't see mom and I got the hell out of there
On average, wild boar is times more dangerous than a bear. Boars are quite agressive in their nature and if they have biglets, then even more so. And they are flipping fast too!!!

She was being to feel that this frog ( as it stared her with it's glassy eyes almost pleading for her attention ) may have once been strange bald man that had been accidentally licked by a frog princess while attempting to catch a fly on his ploughman's lunch and the whole fairy tale magic thing had gone awry.
Now wasn't the time to take risks, it wasn't a particularly attractive frog anyway. Maybe it would just be best to find an old abandoned tower and grow her hair out, something was bound to turn up.
