  • I'm not sure what I was expecting before I watched this, but it wasn't this. I did however thorougly enjoy reacting to band-maid for the first time! If you want to see me do more band-maid reactions, or perhaps a reaction to something completely different, please do ask, and I'm more than happy to oblige.

@@charleslatora5750 Thx man, nice comment. Hey it doesn't matter how young or old you are, music doesn't dictate age. If you're 16 & you love The Rolling Stones that's fine by me. If like you you're 66 & you love BAND-MAID, I think that's great too. I've made some great friends from the MAIDIAC fam on YT, & i drop a lot of (mainly silly) comments; but my primary goal is to try & get as many reactors as possible to feature B-M on their channels. I've said it before but these lovely ladies are criminally under recognised, under promoted & unappreciated by most outside of the B-M community. If by getting them more air time on YT they get recognised for who they are, the best thing to happen to Rock in decades, i'll be a happy man.

No gimmick at all. Miku Kobato (rythm guitar, backing vocals and lyrics), while working at a maid cafe, had the idea of a band with a "gap": innocuous appearence and hard rock. With her band project in mind, Miku looked for musicians and found Kanami Tono (lead guitar and composition) on TH-cam, doing demos as a singer/guitarist. She agreed to join and talk about it to the drummer who was helping her with her demos, Akane Hirose. Akane asked her mate Misa (they were at the same music school) to join. The band started with those four, Miku singing lead, but she quickly realised that her voice was too soft for the kind of music she had in mind, so she proposed to add another singer. After auditions, they found Saiki Atsumi, who quickly became lead singer, while Miku was learning guitar to become in a few years a really good rythm guitarist (and essential backup singer) .
They first recorded 3 mini-albums (7 to 9 songs each) but the record company refused to let them record their own songs. Untill they came with the song "Alone". From that, they wrote and composed nearly all of their songs, for their next three full albums (Just Bring It, World Domination and Conqueror). Of course, as you can see, they play all the instruments themselves, with great virtuosity.
I saw them live last year, and I've seen more than a hundred concerts before: they were totally amazing, easily in my top 3 concerts. They're the real thing (but like you, when I saw my first video, I had my doubt, it looked too good to be true).

Band Maid is a Hard Rock band who incorporate several elements of metal, punk, pop, jazz and even blues into their music. Here’s a MUST READ recent official interview where each one talks in detail about themselves- what got them into music, influences, BM’s formation, and their individual roles within the band. www.reddit.com/r/BandMaid/comments/irq3tq/i_just_discovered_this_band_and_need_some_pointers/
    In summary:
The main instrumental section Kanami- lead guitarist, MISA- bass and Akane- drums are all professionally trained musicians who have been playing multiple instruments since as young as 4 years old. They are in their late 20s now.
Kanami is also the one who composes and arranges their music while Miku- rhythm guitarist/backup vocals, does the lyrics alongside Saiki- main vocalist.
The band was started by Miku in 2013 who found Kanami on the internet and recruited her. Then Kanami got her friend Akane to join in, as they had played together in previous occasions. In turn, Akane recruited MISA who graduated from the same music institute as her.
Later on, Miku having realised her voice wasn’t suitable for Hard Rock passed over the vocals to Saiki who joined them through an audition.
Akane sums up present BM the best, when asked why she isn’t the ‘nominal band leader’ anymore
“Actually, that is no longer the case. It's true that in the past, the band operated with a leader system and I was chosen as the leader, but BAND-MAID really is made up of members with very strong and distinctive personalities and as we have progressed, various roles have been decided.
For example, Kanami is the main composer and the command tower is Saiki. Kobato writes the lyrics and I manage sequencing and other things. In this manner, our distinct roles gradually solidified and all members commented that "we have become a band where all 5 members have equally important responsibilities to drive the band forward".
At that moment, we discontinued the "leader"-led band model.
When we had first formed, we didn't know each other and so I was told "Akane looks like the most dependable amongst us, so please become the leader", but now that I think about it, what on earth about me looked dependable, I wonder .
(Now) I don't have any thoughts or feelings of "I miss being the band leader" or any hard feelings.
In fact, I think that the way things work now is a better reflection of ourselves and is great.”

To answer your look of confusion at the girls crowding the drummer:
The girls are making funny faces (hengao) at Akane, trying to throw her off. They do it quite often to each other. You can see it in Play (live) where Saiki starts to laugh after Akane makes faces back to her. You can also see it in Freedom where Kanami is making faces at Miku.
Also, Domination was song 22/23 during this concert. That's stamina, right there.

Miku worked in a maid cafe in her hometown of Kumamoto and at @Home Cafe in Akihabara after she moved to Tokyo. She quit @Home in 2012 when she was one of the winners in a super idol audition. She briefly was a member of an idol group and she left and went to form the band. She also worked part time in her talent agency's Noodle Cafe (not a maid cafe) up until 2016 when the band started gaining a lot of attention from various overseas fans.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Band Maid. Some background on them: Miku (rhythm guitar/backing vocals) founded the band and was supposed to be lead singer but didn't think her voice was strong enough to sing the types of songs she wanted band to play, so they recruited Saiki. Miku found Kanami (lead guitar) on TH-cam. Kanami is so good that she is Miku's guitar teacher. Miku never played guitar before starting band and has improved wonderfully. Kanami knew Akane (drums) from being on different backing bands together. Akane knew MISA (bass) from attending the same music school. Miku used to work in maid cafe's in Japan and thought it would be cool to dress as maids and play music you wouldn't expect them to play. They call that "The gap". Their music videos are good but you got to watch and listen to their live concert videos. They are a great live band.

There are many fans who have revived their passion for hard rock. They are gradually gaining support from young people and women. They have released nearly 30 videos on the official website and Facebook.

Always fun to watch somebody's first Band-Maid experience. Like Ron below, my first experience was the Thrill MV, which is pretty basic compared to their later stuff, but it kind of shocked me, and got me to check them out more. Then you just get completely addicted, because they're so damned good and so much fun. Totally self made, and very, very hard working with a maniacal but very friendly fan base. (We are Maidiacs) Here are some suggestions and links, though you can go to their YT channel and pick literally anything. Go for LIVE generally, with just a couple of exceptions. Their songs are all over the place genre-wise too, so you'll find super hard rock (not metal in my view), great rock ballads, and stuff that's a mix between punk rock and the Beatles - but it's all just loads of fun. Blooming is a great song, but you can't really say any of them are "representative" because they're always changing it up. In fact, their incredible songwriting and arranging eclipse even their talent, and that's saying something. My suggested order (although it doesn't really matter much) is:

    Dice Music Video: th-cam.com/video/ZpAYnVJX9CY/w-d-xo.html

Blooming MV for show off their ridiculous skills on their axes and songwriting both: th-cam.com/video/uUt_JBMocKM/w-d-xo.html

This is a band whose fans, known as Maidiacs, follow them like Dead Heads followed the Grateful Dead. And like the Grateful Dead the Maids are an unbeatable live show.
When your first impression of Band-Maid is one of their early publicity photos, you might think they were a "put-up" pop group, something Band-Maid has fought hard against. They are a top tier *Rock Act.* and they are committed to accomplishing Word Domination through their music. Their managers were very experienced at producing "Idol Groups" - put up singing-dancing acts that were easily marketed and promoted where each member has a "Special Characteristic" and wears a special color. Band-Maid decided on Black and White and they assumed whimsically odd "Special Characteristics": bassist Misa drinks alcohol, Lead guitar Kanami is an airhead, drummer Akane eats constantly, rhythm guitar Miku identifies as a pigeon and as a result ends most of her sentences with the word "po", and when Saiki, their lead vocalist, nicknamed "The Ice Queen" is asked about her Special Characteristic, she icily states, "I don't have one."
It took a few years for Band-Maid to assume creative control of the direction they wished to pursue, and thank God they did. While their first few management controlled releases were pleasant enough, what Band-Maid has accomplished under their own direction is astonishing and inspiring.

The reason for the maid outfits is because the band founder (Miku) worked in a Maid cafe, and she wanted to contrast the soft image of a maid with the Hard rock that they play.

The founder of the band, Miku, worked in an actual Maid Cafe'. She though the Gap between a bunch of girls in Maid Uniforms playing Hard Rock would be very cool. She was right. But when she decided her voice wasn't right for lead vocals she had the lead guitarist, Kanami, teach her rhythm guitar and she moved to backing vocals and searched their agency for another vocalist. When they found Saiki, she didn't say right away that the "cute clothes" they would be playing Hard Rock in would be Maid Uniforms. She didn't want to scare her off. Supposedly she was the first to ditch the apron, but it was actually MISA, the bassist. She is the barefoot Maid Assassin. The Cool Beauty. She and Saiki are The Darkness Sisters, and the Yang to the rest of the band's Yin. They give BAND-MAID their Edge and balance out all the Sweetness & Light.

Excellent reaction. As mentioned, Miku founded the band while she was working as a waitress at a "Maid Cafe". So the "band of maids" concept was her idea. Kanami (lead guitar) and Akane (drums) thought it was cool and were on board with it. Misa (bass) and Saiki (lead vocal), not so much. But they went along with it in the beginning. In their earlier videos, they all wear the "stereotypical" maid outfits. But over time, Miku allowed Misa and Saiki to have input on their costume designs to more reflect their personality. Some fans might take offense to the word "gimmick". That's contentious. But it's no different than the stage image of KISS. It's just a way for the band to set themselves apart, and it works. When I first saw a thumbnail of the band (their first music video, "Thrill"), I thought to myself: "What the hell?" I clicked on it, then thought: "Hell yeah!". Now, as far as I'm concerned, they can wear whatever they want when they perform. The important thing is that they back it up with skill and talent. This is normally the tune I'd recommend, but you'll get a whole lot of recommendations in the comments. Their catalog is quite extensive and they don't have any bad songs. Enjoy!

I definitely didn't mean gimmick in a bad way! A good gimmick can set a band apart, and it's good marketing. I think Kiss's stage presence is also a gimmick, but obviously not a bad one.
Very interesting to hear some more background here and I'm glad to hear that the maid costumes came from the band itself and not some studio, which makes it much cooler in my opinion.
Also interesting to hear that the other band members later decided to wear slightly alternating outfits, I think it really sets them apart.

The founder of the band, Miku, who is the rhythm guitarist, support singer, and lyricist, used to work in a maid-themed cafe, and she came up with the idea of using the maid motif for the band. However, the band members don't really force it on any band member. For example, Misa, the bass player, just wears solid black dresses (and goes shoeless during concerts) and doesn't dress like a maid at all (although the band members joke that Misa is an assassin-maid, presumably because of the all black clothing). Very early on, both Misa and Saiki (the lead singer) rejected the apron part of the maid costume.
Maid-themed cafes in Japan emphasize cuteness above all else, and Miku has a portion of each concert that is called her "Magic Time" in which she interacts with the audience using extremely cute "maid" mannerisms.

Too much to explain here but small pigeon attempted to break into the business in an idol group Lil Cumin. This three girl idol group failed forcing Miku take employment at Maid Cafés where she decided a kick ass rock band dressed as Maid Cafés employees might be the thing to do. She did not let little details like l don't know anything about western style rock n roll or l don't know how to play an instrument or besides Akane l don't know who will be in the band slow her down one little bit. And she had to take this vision back to the same suits who had put the brakes on her nascent idol career. Kobato Miku from 2015 when she was asked about what type band she had formed. "We are not a (J)POP or idol band. Please judge us by our sound. Po!" The upside to all of this is Band-Maid is beholden to no one but their fans and audiences in concert. I urge you to learn the back story to the most improbable, talented, charismatic, compelling and misunderstood, even by many Japanese themselves, hard rock band working anywhere on the planet today. Sacramento loves Band-Maid.

Ah, yes, the outfits. To make a short story long, Miku (rhythm guitar/backing vocals/lyricist) had worked in maid cafes and thought that a band dressed in outfits associated with sexy submissiveness playing hard, in-your-face rock would be a great hook. Kanami (lead guitar/songwriter/principal arranger) loved the idea, largely because she has no fashion sense and this way she never had to worry about what to wear on stage. Akane (drummer) thought the idea was dumb but fun, but didn't like how the costume restricted her movement. MISA (bass) hated the costumes, and almost didn't join because of them. After MISA's reaction, Miku only told Saiki (lead vocals) that they would wear 'cute costumes ' when performing. Saiki was horrified when she saw them, not because they were maid uniforms, but because they were boring and dowdy (Saiki is quite the fashionista).
Eventually, things came to a head, and Akane (the leader the band doesn't have) decreed that everyone could design their own outfits, as long as they stuck to the maid theme.
Kanami kept the traditional maid outfit.
Miku started heading into cosplay maid territory, like she owned stock in the ruffle-and-flounce factory.
Akane initially ditched the apron, shortened the skirt, and ripped out the shoulder seams of the blouse. Later, Miku helped her make a black and white jumper that suggests a maid uniform while leaving her limbs totally free.
Saiki took a head housekeeper 's uniform, sexed it up, and emerged looking like a sexy dominatrix head maid.
And MISA showed up in a black dress, claiming it was a Croatian maid uniform. Or maybe Lithuanian. She finally went with Ninja maid uniform, because 'you'll never see her cleaning. '

A band that is a genre - or would be if they could be pinned down to just one style (although once you know them you can tell it's them from a mile away): *Cardiacs* . As a gateway drug before the more difficult songs that grow on you more slowly before they possess you, you might enjoy *Jibber and Twitch* - the rotten shed version - th-cam.com/video/OxhuQWKwbqY/w-d-xo.html
Sadly, we lost Tim Smith this year, so this well has now run dry. There is a cult that's left behind, and a lot of musicians who were influenced by Tim. (One thing that's almost always to be found in a Cardiacs song is originality - the real thing, with no compromises. It's refreshing, even eventually in the case of the songs you first think WTF at - maybe even especially these.)
Most people eventually develop a deep love for Cardiacs (they find that there are a lot of bands they like, but only one that they love), but there is the occasional unfortunate soul who develops a hatred for them quite quickly. Strange phenomenon, this non-neutrality.

Welcome aboard, Relnler. You are embarking on (along with many others - 90 million YT hits!) an awesome hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Consistency (nearly 100 songs with new album, “Conqueror”), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destine for mega-stardom. Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off the rails spectacular.
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 50 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: th-cam.com/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/w-d-xo.html Their later songs drive even more - Rin’ne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Glory, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on. But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE and Smile... or more punky like Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series! And many are represented with over 30 well produced music videos. th-cam.com/users/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE concerts such as Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA on February 14th (“Domination” th-cam.com/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/w-d-xo.html), ZEPP 2018, Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 and some of the better 2019 tour Fan vids. Here’s three of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at super intimate venues. The first taken by Vladimir Chupin in Hamburg: th-cam.com/video/__1th7ctgMo/w-d-xo.html, the second taken by JT Dayo in LA: th-cam.com/video/4uIYBkAybCI/w-d-xo.html, and third, JOSER8845 in LA: th-cam.com/video/usWZvlGGDSs/w-d-xo.html. If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid. For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009
Band-Maid members are: (Ages are best est.).
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements, melodies and High Priestess mediator between the Gods (Band Members) and the masters and princesses (Fans). At 26 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Leader) as Miku calls her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away the persona. Her charisma, performance and voice focus the experience.
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 28 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kurrupo! No, no, no… KURRUPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Naw-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 28 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 29 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumRilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Assassin" - Bass, 27 years old. A sullen, barefoot, dark spirit driving her 5-string bottom-end to hell and back, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. The Mysterious One literally kills it… every note.. uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!

It's an image for them, just like KISS have their painted faces and Marilyn Manson has his own "shock rock" tactics, Justin Bieber has his gayness, and other musicians have theirs.

@@eatsmylifeYT It's obviously a gimmick. A gimmick is just a concept or device to attract attention/business. That's all there is to it. Miku herself explains the gap between their image and their sound. That is a gimmick. They have gotten loads of interviews because of it. Interviewers keep mentioning the gap. Many people enjoy their music more because of the gap. Many people enjoy them because of their costumes/stage presence. That is a good gimmick, not only because it attracts attention as a gimmick is supposed to do, it enhances further enjoyment of the band after. They even employ many other stuff from maid cafes like how they call their fans, how they call their lives, Miku's omajinai time, etc.
The bad rap the word gimmick gets is because of all the shitty things without substance that people get into because they get attracted by a gimmick. A good gimmick will attract business, but without proper substance, people will drop it and get pissed off. But with proper substance, a proper business will retain their customers and forge good relations with them. Band-Maid doesn't fear using a gimmick because they are a properly awesome band with very high quality substance behind it. Miku is a marketing genius.
The band itself embraces their gimmick. They have fun with it, and they make their customers have fun with it. They have a good gimmick backed with excellent everything else. That is good business. Defensive fanboys who just bash every person hearing about B-M for the 1st time for even the slightest perceived insult and being illogical because they don't know the meaning of the word - that is bad business. Please stop.
