About Narayaneeyam - 100 dasaka in 100 ragas
Sarvamangala is blessed to have the opportunity to present an exclusive rendition of Narayaneeyam recited by Sri Edamana Vasudevan Nambodiri. Recited in 100 different ragas we bring you a daily series on Narayaneeyam - 100 dasaka over 100 days.
Narayaneeyam is a medieval Sanskrit text, comprising a summary study in poetic form of the Bhagavata Purana. It was composed by Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri, (1560-1666 AD) one of the celebrated Sanskrit poets in Kerala. Narayaneeyam is the story of Lord Narayana. It is a work consisting of 1035 slokas or verses, divided into 100 dasakas or chapters, each dasakam consisting of approximately 10 slokas.
Sri Edamana Vasudevan Namboodiri started studying music at the age of 15 under the tutelage of Kalamandalam Achuthashan, who is currently teaching Kathakali Sangeetham at Kalamandalam, Thrissur, Kerala. At 17 years of age, Sri Edamana went on to study carnatic music from Brahmashri Olapamanna Vasudevan, a disciple of Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar, which he continued for 8 years under the strict Gurukula tradition. Thereafter he graduated from the Delhi University with a Master's Degree in Carnatic Music. After the death of Olapamanna, Sri Edamana learned Sanskrit for 18 years under the tutelage of Prof. V Krishnan, the then Head of Sanskrit Department at Kerala Varma College, Thrissur. Sri Edamana considers it blissful to have dedicated five years as the Head Priest in service to Lord Shiva and three years at the Devi Temple. He has been fortunate to serve at the Thrissur Brahmaswam Mattom Veda paattasaala for eight years. Since 2010, Sri Edamana has devoted himself to the study and dissemination of Bhagavatham having received guidance from Brahmashri Keezhmundayoor Krishnan Namboodirippad (Ramadevi Mandiram Poonkunnam Thrissur)
