- An excerpt from the audio recording “To Make Heaven on Earth” by Paramahansa Yogananda. Author of the best-selling spiritual classic Autobiography of a Yogi, this beloved world teacher came to America in 1920 from his native India, and was the first great master of yoga to live and teach in the West for an extended period (more than 30 years). He is now widely recognized as the Father of Yoga in the West. He founded Self-Realization Fellowship (1920) and Yogoda Satsanga Society of India (1917), which continue to carry on his spiritual legacy worldwide under the leadership of Brother Chidananda, president and spiritual head of SRF/YSS.

The seventh in our Collector’s Series of recorded talks by Paramahansa Yogananda, this inspiring address was given on December 25, 1949, during the annual Christmas banquet held at the Self-Realization Fellowship Mother Center. Paramahansaji spoke to his ever-growing spiritual family with warm praise and affection. His words at times were an outpouring of his interiorized state of consciousness, and at other times he reminisced informally with the resident disciples and guests.

Such great love of God, wisdom and direct perception Master has. If when one is awake you can physically and mentally be in the deep sleep state, you are in the self realized state. When you are in the deep sleep state, yet aware (the observer), you are in the self realized state. When you realize you are not this temporary physical body, nor egoic mind, but awareness (the observer) you are there. The lower egoic mind cannot control the egoic mind, but it can be observed by our highest self. Master wanted to turn us inward toward God, not the external world which can never give us the bliss we seek. To awaken us from the dream state full of ignorance, suffering, longing and separation. To realize your true self is the exact reverse process of creation. Be still and know you are of God. Eternal God was one & alone, and desired to be many. In order to enjoy the delight of self discovery as God ascends back to itself through the successive stages of evolution.
