Making Our Dining Table

- My wife has been threatening to buy a new dining room table for about a decade now and I keep saying I'm going to make one. The time has come. I need to make a dining room table. The table is made from the glue lam beams that used to be over the pool structure where the shop is now. The four legs of the table lean outward and are held in place with a central stretcher and the strength of the table top. To hide the knots and imperfections in the table top, I had our kids do drawings and I use those drawings to cut out shapes to make inlays for the tabletop. I also carved the underside of the table top to give the table a thinner edge and still have some structure between the legs.

Me thinks it will cup from the unevenness? You have more material being exposed to humidity changes.
tableshaper I think the wood was quite stable moisture wise anyway and by applying the finish, it should help to keep it from cupping. I guess time will tell though :)
As Frank said, this is only the prototype. The final version is coming.... in another 10 years (maybe 20)!
I can't believe how big the kids are since we first saw them in earlier videos. Am sure Frank and Ms hope it won't take 20 years to get them out on their own!!
Watch this made me remember my great great grandad. He built and made stuff all the time. "Why buy it made when you can make it with love?" My mom told me about the day he built the shop in the back yard because his wife was tired of all the noise and dust. He was a cool man! So are you! The table looks beautiful!!

Quite a few great ideas in this piece Frank. The biggest ''Aha!' for me is the additional leg room for those seated at the ends, which on a typical trestle style table is problematic. Great example of design, execution and videography all in one package.
Oh, and your kids art to cover material defects is pure freaking gold.
Frank, me being a grandfather, I don't thank you will ever want to replace those drawings with another table top. It's memories created by ,little people, who are big people now, who we wish were little again. Mine are gone now, building their own life and families. I still can see those memories on table tops all over the house. What beautiful memories of time passed. Thanks for sharing your talents and experience.

Man, when that thing gets all filled colors and glue and scratches the kids did, you will never get rid of it. That table already has a story, in a decade, it will have a history. My dad made something like this and has it to this day, its not the prettiest but it has family stories written all over it.
Dad of the year, using your kids drawings as part of your family table. They will see this in 20 years and give you a big hug.
There is a device which fits onto the spindle and will follow a shape and provides a digital output. This project is so good in so many respects. Mr Howarth, you appear to out do yourself on each project. They are never boring and always different. Above all, you inspire me to be a better wood worker. Thanks and cheers, David.

As a custom furniture creator, I so envy your shop. I am only 42 years young so as time passes this may upgrade (as long as my children move out at age ten). You are great creator and I appreciate your perfectionism but your super ability is your amazing editing skills. I have never created for video so I a completely ignorant of this skill and it makes your content look that much more Hollywood (in a great way). Thank You!
Great video and commentary as usual. I was very interested in your remarks about remaking the table in a fine hardwood after the kids are moved out. Good luck, I did something like that completely forgetting about grand children and ended up with the new table looking even more distressed than the original, but of course it was all worth it.
I really liked your use of plain bolts and nuts as a means of attachment in the leg assemblies, you have proven your competence in constructing complex joints many times. This straight forward and practical approach is refreshing.

Pavel Sadowsky He spent a lot of time and used tools most people don't own to make a 2x4 piece of wood. Which you can buy at a home store for a couple dollars.

I really love this project Frank. Having the kids create the designs for the plugs is absolutely brilliant and I would have never thought to remove all that bulk from the bottom to lighten up the top. Co cool.

What I really love is how much you include your kids. I always loved working on things with my dad, but he passed away when I was 11 and I feel like I missed out on making things with him. You are a true source of inspiration for me and when I eventually have kids, I know that I will include them in projects just like you do.

Yes, that table will patiently sit and listen to many many hours of happy (and maybe some small amount of sad) family discussion and back and forth over the years. And it will be happy for that opportunity and to have been built.

Best detailed I love is the contours at the underside if the table slab. Very elegant.
Tip: next time you use exposed zinc hardware, dunk them in a jar of white distilled vinegar for a few hrs. The vinegar will strip off the zinc and then you'll be left with bare metal to patina as you wish.
Imagine family dinners around the new table! Their history will be written on it! Everyday objects absorb the life around them, and if you listen carefully, they tell you stories. The carpenter builds the table, but the family makes it into what it is.

I think watching your process is my favorite part other than the sheer creativity that you have.
If you didn’t find your files you could have used epoxy to fill the cutouts. It wouldn’t have been your original idea but it would have worked.

Or do the shapes again from scratch, but a millimeter larger, so that the inlays will fit. And remember to save the file 😊

I thought the same thing. I've been in his shoes with work projects, losing autocad files. I think the worst is when you upgrade autocad and forget to reset auto save to 5 minutes or less. I've lost hours of work before, it's painful.
My idea would have been to use scaled-up versions of the same images, recreated from the original paper cutouts. For example, if he made the new car 10% larger than the original, then he could have re-mortised the hole 10% larger, then re-made the filler pieces 10% larger.
I think the problem was that he'd scaled and warped the shapes to fit the sizes he needed, so even re-cutting the shaped would have lead to imperfect fits
I don't know what software you're using, but vCarvePro has a v-inlay that would make those plugs easier. You don't have to worry about how tight your offsets are and it lets you get tighter lines than than the radius of your straight bits.
loving the build in support for the thinner edge and removing weight from the middle, also elegant solution for allowing people to sit at the ends of the table.

Nice. If you couldn't have gotten the files back, could you have enlarged the original cuts by a 1/4" to then have your plug size?
bryce86777 I think maybe he lost the coordinates to where each feature was located as well, so it would have been hard to line them up without making them substantially over sized...granted with a top down photo of the top he could have done an overlay in fusion 360 and re traced the cutouts...or done a pencil tracing of each feature, scanned them, and dropped them into fusion, or just cut the new plugs on the bandsaw using said templates...either way, the project would have been far from scrapped! Lol

Those "cheap pieces of gluebeams" have history that hardwood from local sawmill doesn't have. Excellent project!

I was raised by my grandparents and they had this solid oak table. Typical 70's table but it was thick and well built. Everyone used to gather around that table for games, crafts, hair styling and late night gossip sessions. It wasn't that great looking of a table but it meant alot to us and unfortunately it got sold when my grandpa died and my grandma moved away. So please know that even if the table isn't in the ideal wood, the fact that you made it and had your kids design the cute cut outs, it will mean something to them later on in life. I miss my grandma's table and greatly regret letting it go. I did however manage to keep a chair that went with the table and I am glad I did.

Without blowing smoke, I'm a similar age to you and have been in the industry all my life. You are so clever dude. "I'll make one" Is the default joke phrase in our house.
That table is the bees knees, well done. Happy wife happy life. Would be pretty awesome to see a time management video showing how much time the cnc machine actually saves a woodworker vs them actually cutting the specific pieces themselves. Some discussion or formula based things to consider could be programming, set up, error ratio, potential Jig requirement, CNC equipment cost & maintenance vs comparable non automated equipment & maintenance.
I'm not sure that it really saves a lot of time especially on one off things. there's so much set up time and testing to make sure things are gonna go right. it's more that you can do things that would be very difficult any other way
As someone who uses a lot of Doug fir beams and decking at work, I use leftovers to make things too! I really enjoyed seeing to make a 2x4, something that tends to happen in my shop too!

Good stuff Frank. I have done the same thing, I've built "prototypes" for the exact same reasons, kids, pets, play-dough, hot glue, paint, etc., and have slowly started replacing those pieces with the real ones now that the kids are older and the messy kid projects have diminished. It's a good idea, it let's you do things a tad different the second time around, things you wish you had done the first time. Love the videos. Can't wait to see the next project. Take care. B.

The creativity of the various shots is incredible. I've seen this video once already but, coming back I'm really impressed by the camera work. Setting up shot and counter shot of the wood going into the tool. It's a level of artistry on top of the woodworking.
The detail and level of planning is always so great to watch being executed. Personally I didn't like the inclusion of the inserts and would have loved it to be present as a rustic dining table with imperfections to the timber. That's just my preference of course! Overall though glad your kids had a part to play in this and you have another beautiful piece of furniture!
When those kids get older, they'll be fighting over that table. There's so much character in it.
