That clears up a lot of questions George. Audio can be complicated but this specific video is surely helpful in clearing up the complication. I always have a variety of plugs and wire on hand in case I have to make up a patch or insert cable to get a specific audio issue resolved.

Late to the party…great video George! I have a dramatic distortion connecting a DBX 286s unit to my new Yaesu FT-710…I think a DI box is what I need…going directly from my Heil PR781 to the FT-710, no problems (pin 1-3 tied up at the mic to TS)! Thanks for sharing..Cheers

In this document they recommend having shields grounded on both ends of a cable, but if there is more than one possible ground path between devices (Ground loop?), should I follow George's recommendation at 11:03 to only ground at one end?

Thanks for the video. Just to clarify, TRS out from pre-amp, all pins connected. At TS end into DiBox , tip connected, Ring wire from TRS goes to sleeve, ground/braid not connected? Having a nightmare getting Audio from Mic > Scarlett Solo > Dibox > Rear ACC2 of TS-890

Wow, I've watched dozens of videos to find out if I should take special care to connect a studio microphone to my Icom IC-7700 and the only place I could find a practical and theoretical description was here. But a curious question, wouldn't it be better with a Passive DI box (Behringer DI20) instead of an Active one like your DI100 is? The DI20 has an output of 600 Ohms which to me seems more right? One other thing, shouldn't a 1 uF tantalum capacitor be fitted between the mic jack's mic input and to the DI box, Icom has a voltage of phantom 8Volt on the mic input, which will be shorted when trying to connect a dynamic microphone. I know that all Heil microphones for Icom have this capacitor installed. 73 Per HB9GIM (now a subscriber)
Hi there, in this video I was being specific about using a condenser microphone. Although nowadays I run a Shure SM7B dynamic, its isolated from everything via the DI box. The whole point of running it from the 9volt supply is to activate the pad circuit really. Its only task is to pad and isolate. Cheers for the sub. For sure you need a DC blocking cap if you're going straight from the mic into the radio's front socket, but not necessary with the ACC port as that 'phantom' supply is not there. When running outboard gear there is not a lot between the mic and the rig...73

Phantom power is provided by the pre amp to the mic, usually 48v, the pre-amp which George is using as an example as a switchable phantom power facility, so you can use a Dynamic mic or Condenser type mic.

Excellent explanation of the “DI BOX” and use thereof George. I’ll be implementing a similar “hookup” for use with my IC-7300.

Ive never had any issue with one end floating. Sorry, your comment ended up in my review folder for some reason. I dont look in there very often.

Once you use the rear acc port for your audio you don't have to worry about that.

Will the phantom power still work after change over to unbalanced.. or should I use a battery?
The phantom power on the di box will not. You can use a stand alone phantom supply
