As a clinician certified in child trauma and several trauma treatment models, it is very frustrating to work with other professionals who are not well-educated in Complex Trauma and treatment. The Committee for the DSM V did a great disservice to people who are struggling with ComplexTrauma when they refused to include it as this might have resulted in mental health professionals learning more about this diagnosis. As it stands, I have to give multiple diagnoses in order to try and help others understand what the child is struggling with but still, these don't really explain what is really going on. The result is doctors who ignore the information I give them and instead prescribe medication for ADHD. I have a child right now that is getting ready to be placed in residential because the Community Mental Health Center just doesn't get it and has put him on the wrong medications and provided inappropriate services for the last several months.

Kim Cross LSCSW I hear you. It’s quite hard to believe the gap between services and reality.

Kim Cross LSCSW I know I went through it myself. But you need to consider the source the DSM is a disservice. But good people like you and me are making a difference I believe. I have wonderful counsellor who knows about CPTSD and is educating my care givers for me...

As a person who not only has trauma from being a transracial adoptee in a home where I was abused mentally, physically, verbally, by my adoptive mother, and molested and raped by my adopted father from ages 5-17 and by the youngest of the 3 brothers from 8-14. Complex trauma IS a real thing!! I can relate to all of that as a child and as an adult, plus a few adds in from my own fun environment being the only biracial kid in an all white neighborhood, a narcissist mother who adopted you for her white savior complex, and a dad who was a closest racist who also did mess me up religiously by praying with me at night for no harm to come upon me, yet he was my predator. I was a child in survival mode daily!!! I learned to wear so many hats as a child. I stole, lied, cheated, became the best bullshitter as an adult. Way bad emotional deregulation, hypervigilant, abandonment issues, nighttime anxiety so bad I take a cocktail of meds to knock me out yet my anxiety is so bad they take 4 hours to kick in and work and if it’s really bad my body just overrides the medications and I’ll be wide awake. Trauma from a very young age and on the daily changes everything in you and how you view everything and everyone. I grew up and went to schools in great districts, lived in a posh neighborhood, we weren’t rich but did okay. Went to CA for vacation once a year, yet behind closed doors was a whole different world. I’m honestly surprised I don’t have multiple personalities as many hats I wore trying to survive. Them not recognizing Complex Trauma is a slap in the face really to people like myself and child who are growing up in homes like mine. Teachers also desperately need to be trained to spot signs. Not one teacher ever asked me a thing, I just got in trouble and labeled bad.

This was a beautiful film both part 1 and 2. It gave me a deeper understanding of child trauma. I never thought that something i might see as irregular or abusive might be a daily and a normal thing for someone else. Thank you for bringing this issue to the spotlight. A majority of times stories like these are hidden in the shadows. These realities aren't exposed enough which is why people tend to neglect and ignore children who need help. The society i live in tends to push away broken youth and send them off else where, but pushing them away doesn't solve the problem. I salute to these men and women who are working daily to help children who are suffering due to trauma. Thank you for your efforts. And thank you to the team who created this beautiful and informative film.
