    I have a great respect for the guys who take so much time on mobile installs whether it’s for competition or daily use, not a lot of room to work with considering vehicles and some times can become frustrating. Me personally, take the extra meticulous mile on my base station. Very cool install Mr.Miller and that’s a clean suburban too. 73

    Thank you for this. I've had to deal with a ground pigtail to the puck before. It causes the feedline to radiate, affects SWR, and can cause RF microphone feedback. A quick fix is to clamp split ferrite beads over the coax and slide them up to where the ground pigtail exits the coax. Looking forward to the next installment!

    Im almost certain your suburban's entire body and frame is all factory bonded by standard welding and bolting not glue like you keep saying. Use multimeter and youll see nearly all the metal in your vehicle is at the sane potential to your main and add on batteries (if said batteries are properly/heavily grounded to engine and chassis) Only possible resistance will be doors if plastic washers are used in hinges. I think only bonding that would make a noticeable difference is 1 strap on each door. Id put ferrite beads on all your car audio speaker wires and rca cable. For magmount its important to a solid connection between the foil film under the magnet and the internal antenna ground.

    That first whip antenna that you mentioned was made by Motorola is actually branded by Motorola and Harris, but is made by PCTel. It is not 0-6 meter, it is 136-174, 380-520 & 7/800 MHz. It is a 1/4 wave on VHF and is very wide-banded and works very well. They are what we use on our system for all 4 bands.

    What are you going to run in there? The antenna looks like a CB antenna. You mentioned several alternators and additional batteries. What power will you be running? I don't know much about CB but isn't it limited to 4 watts on AM mode? Do you need a special license for high power?
    BTW, I've been running mobile HF for close to 20 years. Currently I use an Icom IC-7000 and a Tarheel 75A antenna. I agree with you about grounding and bonding. I did similar things in my 4Runner but the most important was to bond the exhaust to the frame in several places. Also, I bonded the body to frame and the rear axle to frame (to keep any RF current from pitting the rear bearings. Unlikely but possible).
    Prior to that, after I installed the radio and tried transmitting on 40 meters while driving, the check engine light came on and the vehicle went into limp mode (greatly reduced power). I'm glad I had an OBD2 reader with me and was able to clear the codes and get home. It would have been a major trouble if I didn't have the scanner with me. We were way out in the middle of nowhere. I highly recommend having one if you run a high power transmitter.
    Bonding the exhaust fixed the problem and the codes never came back.

Good on the Loctite!

  • @towerman75
    @towerman75 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The only thing I don't understand, for the grounding is super, but at the wattage you talked about running, and the electronics that is involved in todays vehicles, how do you keep from getting into that ??

    • @BoxBuilderIdaho
      @BoxBuilderIdaho  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well the thing that we've worked out is the RF will stay on the outside of the vehicle for the most part. Some of the higher frequencies get blocked out by the just simple things like the tent that's in the windows. You ever noticed how your garage door opener sometimes won't work if your vehicle is just a certain way and there's too much window tint in the way.. that helps put a good grounding system a little bit of properly placed ferrite the wires that go to and from the electronics aren't residents of the RF just kind of passes right on by. I really wish in modern vehicles they would do Twisted leads on most of the electronics that would help so much

I'm not even clear what band this video is for because of the antennas you use. Anyways, sorry for the dumb questions, but I'd rather ask than screw something up. Thanks so much. I love your videos. • @BoxBuilderIdaho
      @BoxBuilderIdaho  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Either or.. the main thing is contacted the surface area of the vehicle body period at lower output power levels the the bond of the magnet to the body of the vehicle for more than substantially. But once you start to increase your power output level that magnetic connection becomes woefully inadequate
