  • X-Bomber was renamed Star Fleet and dubbed by English speaking actors for broadcast in the United Kingdom on ITV. The show was broadcast there on Saturday mornings, first airing on October 23, 1982,[4] the day before Star Wars aired for the first time on British television. Due to its broadcast slot, the advertisements shown before, during and after each episode frequently included children's Public Information Films. The series was also broadcast as such on first-run syndication in the United States. Drawing heavily on diverse influences such as Star Wars, Japanese Anime and Gerry Anderson's various "Supermarionation" series, the show ran for twenty-four half-hour episodes (twenty-five in Japan - the eighteenth episode, titled Bloody Mary's Promotion, was not included in the English version, as it consisted mainly of flashbacks). The English version's theme song was composed by Paul Bliss,[5] and was later covered by Queen member Brian May and Van Halen guitarist Eddie Van Halen. This was released under the name "Star Fleet Project". The screenplay was adapted for English by Michael Sloan, who in later years would create the popular TV series The Master and The Equalizer. Actress Denise Bryer ("Commander Makara") and editor Tony Lenny both went on to collaborate with Gerry Anderson and Christopher Burr making another memorable sci-fi series, Terrahawks.

I had the full VHS box set growing up and must've watched the whole series a dozen or more times. I had entirely forgotten about it... and now I'm crying while watching the whole series.

For all the young people watching, THIS is what we had in 1985. Would be in front of the TV on Sat Mornings to watch it. The first anime to ever hit The UK shores. Memories abound :)

this is not the first the UK had a bunch of Japanese animation on TV. but saturday mornings in the UK and the states up until 1999 was awesome. I'm going to be 50 soon find myself watching old TV shows and cartoons from 5 decades ago or more. There is just nothing i enjoy at on TV at this time, even a large majority of the new Japanese animation is not to my liking.

Wrong. The UK had at least Marine Boy and Battle Of The Planets (both actual anime) on our telliies years before this turned up. This isn't a cartoon of any sort - it's a puppet show. If anything, more of a Gerry and Sylvia Anderson homage. But it is pretty damn good.

Another funny fact is that the first twelve episodes were themselves the only ones aired in japan in the 1980s, long until the DVD came along!
This is mostly because the series bombed so hard in its native country, that the next dozen episodes aired outside of Japan first, also in the 1980s!

  • @bangerbangerbro

I'm sure last time I looked at this video late last year the picture quality was better than this. Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention. Now I decided to watch all the way through anyway (good thing it is properly formatted as a 4:3 video as it fits nicely on the 4:3 monitor I have here with a bigger screen than my laptop) and so far it seems very well produced but the voice acting lets it down. Some of the wooden voice acting I don't mind, and some of it is actually funny in itself, but the voices of the villains I think and PPA went too far in the kids' program voice direction and are just over-the-top ridiculous. I don't know if the original voice acting is a lot better as I don't understand Japanese and even if I did I don't know if the emotion would come across in the same way. Anyway I'm surprised the program has sort of gripped me. Now I want to know what F01 is, though I'm pretty sure it is just a room in the physics building of the university I just started at.
