I love Armenian cukes. Botanically its a melon. But I love eating these fresh in the garden, in salads, and especially for juice. It's fantastic, and tastes more "fresh" than cucumber because there is no bitterness. They yield extremely well, and I grew them no problem in the high desert of California where we have high winds, high heat (up to 115), and a 35 degree difference from night and day most of the year. Used a tree trellis and this worked well for them.
I grow these too. I had such a big harvest this year. Was getting about 7-8 per week. I even gave some away to friends. The only way for them not to be wasted was to pickle them. They turned out very good. Nice and crisp! Plus learning how to jar was fun.
I will be planting armenian pale green cucumbers soon. First time gardener. What is the best way to determine if they are ready to be harvested? They all look super long. Can you harvest too early? Thank you.
I made a cheap trellis out of old fence wire , and made a lasagna garden around it . the armenian plants are looking wonderful .I cant wait to try them,i hope .
I just had my 1st Armenian cucumbers and ate it like a regular cucumber, and it was quite good. I actually made a mistake when I bought the seeds thinking it was the regular dark green cucumber, imagine my surprise when I saw this long light green cucumber...
I used to eat them when I would visit Syria in the summer as a kid. Haven't seen them in any supermarkets here in the US so I started growing them last year. It was a great success and better than traditional cucumbers! I also grew Striaght-8 and Wisconsin pickling cucumbers but they were very bitter so this year I'm only going to grow Armenian cucumbers. I have a couple different varieties I'm going to try.
You should definitely open a Twitter account! I was going to share it, but I don't see you on there. This channel needs more viewers, and Twitter is an excellent platform for sharing.
Wow!!! You amaze me very time. as usual your video presentation is excellent. I would like to ask you a few questions: 1) What is the difference between regular cucumbers and Armenian cucumber? is it the taste, texture or health benefits? This is the first time I heard about Armenian cucumber. 2) Where can I buy the seeds? 3) All the natural insecticides you have shown are your inventions? They are so simple yet effective (according to your video). I never knew about the milk and water. Thank you and looking forward to more videos from you. Be well. Dinyar
Thanks for your feedback, much appreciated. 1) They are similar but Armenian cucumbers taste better (subjective) when eaten raw. My favorite for taste is the white cucumber (Himangi) 2) Here: amzn.to/2dlO1Ob 3) Not my inventions but I found them the most simple and effective over my many years of gardening experience!
Great video! And beautiful cucumbers! I will try to grow these next season. I have a spider mite problem on my regular cucumber plants. I just pulled 2 plants out, only got 3 cucumbers. I still have 2 more plants growing and am trying to contain the mite problem with insecticidal soap and neem. This is my first time growing cucumbers successfully. Will hopefully have a better harvest with the Armenians. I've heard they grow very well here in TX.
@@vynguyen6376 Hi Vy, my harvest was excellent. I started 2 plants and got more cucumbers than I needed. The hotter it got, the more they produced. They are going to be a staple in my garden from now on because I now know they produce. When they get large, they get a little hollow in the middle but they are still edible. Very mild flavor, I made a lot of cucumber salad. They should grow fine in Houston.
We love Armenian cucumbers, we pick them when they're considerably smaller though. We usually pick them before the seeds are fully developed, they're about 8" at that point. I think the flavor is best at that point. My son would eat the whole thing, he wouldn't even slice it.
Tried a couple of times, we don't have enough heatwave for them to grow. They are only available in Indian grocery stores. 2017 however is going to be a good year as I have access to a greenhouse and will be starting a few of my own plants inside and then move out for roughly 110 growing days.
hi Carlfonia garderner. i am from mombasa kenya. hav started container planting from your inspirational gardening. made a mix of 50-50 compost and cocopeat.. a cupful of calcium powder for tomato plants got lots of bloomms.after hand pollination got loads of baby tomato but they all are black at the ends:( pls assist.
We live in a home called and "Earthship" at 10,000' elevation. The front of our home is paneled with 4' x 8' glass with a planter box along the entire front inside the home. Our night time temperatures are cool, 52* -65* day time up to 85*, we regulate by air movement through opening windows. Last year I grew a "pickling cucumber" ; I had great difficulty with pollination. A real problem with an indoor garden. Are these cucumbers self Pollinating?
my container plants that I started end of August aren't growing upwards. and it's flowering now in zone 9. should I pinch off the flowers to encourage it to grow trellises?
I am growing them for the first time in 2017 thanx to your video, thank you very much. my 4 Armenian cucumbers plants which I started from seed are doing great!!!!!
hello sir i have a general question. i am from virginia. which zone i belongs to. how do i know what kind of vegetable grow in my place. kindly help my to identify this
I live in Orange County and plan to start a veggie garden but my yard has quite a few squirrels visiting throughout the year. Should I worry that they will chew things up and if so, what do you recommend to protect my plants?
In Orange county, squirrels are not that big of a problem but roof rat are! They eat everything from veggies to seedlings and dig up seeds, you need to keep them away. I have posted some videos on how to do that without using anything dangerous. Or you can use classic rat traps with bait. They work quite well. Good luck!
I am stumped! I grew these this year and had no luck. It was grown in a 2' deep raised bed with a cattle panel trellis. The vine was covered in yellow flowers, but the foliage was a solid bright yellow as the flowers. I fed the vines every 10 days or so with fish emulsion, calcium nitrate, epsom salts, tomato-tone, etc. I did not have a single fruit and the foliage stayed bright yellow. I am going to try again next Spring. I live in zone 7b, NE Alabama. I am glad you did this video, I will try growing them in a large container.
Most likely what happened was that there were not enough pollinators (bumblebees). Next season, try hand pollinating - take a male flower and hand pollinate the female flower. I am sure you will get a ton of fruit! Good luck!!
Hello, thanks for responding to my previous query about sprayers. Have been wondering if you know of any good VEGAN fertilizers for the kitchen garden. We are vegetarian and when I read that bone meal, blood meal and feather meal are present in the fertilizers, I am completely put off! I'd rather not feed my veggies these ingredients that are derived from slaughter houses around the country, since ultimately I am consuming them myself. Thanks !
Yeah, I've heard that the Japanese cucumbers taste great. You've done so many great videos I was just curious as to if you have grown them before. If you do, please let me know what you think! Thanks.

refreshing ice cold cucumber juice is what I usually make with cucumbers. so relaxing.
Agree :)
I had no luck growing this variety of cucumber...maybe I'll try to plant it in its own container next season. Thanks for sharing and the tips!😃
Good luck in the next season. If you are not getting cucumbers, try hand pollinating the flowers!
I just had my 1st Armenian cucumbers and ate it like a regular cucumber, and it was quite good. I actually made a mistake when I bought the seeds thinking it was the regular dark green cucumber, imagine my surprise when I saw this long light green cucumber...
I won some seeds in a giveaway, now thanks to your video I am really looking forward to planting some Thanks!
Nice harvest !!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Yes neem oil spray should effectively stop the spider mite problem and also stop powdery mildew. Good luck with the harvest!
How was your harvest? I’m in Houston and I want to try this for my 2019 growing season

Is the origin of those cucumbers from Armenia. The look very long and healthy.
I can't believes you still have Armenian Cucumber. My Cucumber was vanishes since July. I guess our zones is different from you. Love you Gardening...
Benefits of eating pls
Cucumber is almost all water, with vitamins and minerals, so excellent for health!
What month should I start planting the Armenian cucumber seeds?
hi Carlfonia garderner. i am from mombasa kenya. hav started container planting from your inspirational gardening. made a mix of 50-50 compost and cocopeat.. a cupful of calcium powder for tomato plants got lots of bloomms.after hand pollination got loads of baby tomato but they all are black at the ends:( pls assist.
Sounds like blossom end rot, which is due to calcium deficiency. Maybe he calcium you used was not avail to the plants? Janice

Try using grow lights, they can be extended from 2 feet to 8 feet. Something like this: amzn.to/2dlLJhS

This was the cucumis, which is the Latin root of the word cucumber, of the Romans. Can you believe that?
Do these taste like melons? I heard that they're really a melon and not a cucumber.
They have a more cucumber like taste, in fact they are very delicious!
First Comment and nice vid
