It's a very fuzzy pedal when cranked too high. It's great when you roll back the tone on your axe completely and use a neck pickup. It bursts through in a thick creamy fuzzy way!
I've personally owned seventeen different distortion pedals in my life but I keep coming back to the D+. I bought my first one around 1983. After seeing it mentioned in the equipment lists in the tour programs from 'Moving Pictures' & 'Diary of a Madman', I figured that if it's good enough for Alex & Randy, it's DEFINITELY good enough for me. (Sadly Randy was gone by the time Ozzy played New Orleans in 1982 but the tour programs still had Randy, and his gear. The 'Moving Pictures' tour... F*cking wow!)
Sorry you missed seeing Randy Rhoads live. He was AWESOME! I saw the 'Diary of a Madman' tour in Lexington, KY February 13, 1982. During the solo for 'Crazy Train', he was playing the white Les Paul custom (that guitar was bigger than he was!) and he broke a string. I was close enough to see the lights glimmer off it. He played right through! Didn't miss a lick! Thanks for assuring me of the benefits of the MXR Distortion+. I've been using a Blackstar 100 wat amp & while good, I have not been completely satisfied with the distortion. I might have to give it a try! Oh, and I saw Rush on their 'Signals' tour in 1982. It was at Municipal Auditorium in Tennessee. While the music was fantastic - as expected - I thought the venue looked like a high school gym. Literally there was one side of the auditorium that had bleachers pulled out to accommodate the fans.
Yeah, I first encountered MXR in the 1982 MARCEL mail-order catalog, and then in the Live after death inlay (now gone) Murray still used it on the World slavery tour
Some other famous last names who use(d) this: Mayer, Kulick, Molko, Kisser, Harvey, Gilbert, Yorke, Morello, Cook, Cobain, Vai, Moore, Smear, Ronson, Van Zandt &... Slash.
Shock Me - KISS, yesss! I don't know if Ace Frehley played a Dist+ but it's cool you chose to play this song! Also, Carlos Cavazo of Quiet Riot said in an interview that all he had when they started playing in clubs and recorded "Metal Health" back then was a Flying V with a Dimarzio Super Distortion, an MXR Distortion+ and a Marshall Plexi stack.
Is a very versatile pedal for a distortion with only 2 knobs, can be a fuzz on high output and high distortion, can be an overdrive on lower settings and can be a side by side competitor with the ds1 on some settings. It can even be used as a clean boost with other distortions, which is what I use it for mainly.
"I feel like I don't have enough volume". Yep that unit has the same problem as a s/h one I've just sent back to Andertons. Volume issue - the one I had was like this -:at 12 o'clock the volume dropped by 1/2 - now I previously owned a new one so that's wrong - and the one he's using is wrong - maxed out that would be so much more gain than he's playing.
That's why you buy a Boss SD1 or an Ibanez Tube Screamer or just a boost pedal to put in front of it. The sound is so damn good, you can make it louder so many different ways. Even putting an EQ before or after it.
wasnt this similar to the old Storm distortion 10?...i had one of those yrs ago....it fell apart from abuse and neglect...i paid a tenner for it in 1990...wish i still had it ...best dist pedal ive heard....and theyre worth a bit now!
I'm deciding between MXR+ and boss SD-1, I know one is distortion and the other is overdrive. I love Black Sabbath, but also Husked Du. What advice do you have?
I've played 23+ years and use MXR dist+ and boss DS1 only. But I rarely use it alone. I either have it on a just over threshold dirty channel or on something like an my old peavey Bandit I use a boss super overdrive to get that barely overdrive threshold tone then push into high gain with MXR dist +. I wish you wldve used it that way too in the video. Most players do this
Mxr d+ , ibanez st9 ....and many more ,...great pedals ...hope all the new players .kept it , plays it .. ..because , i want to buys all .soon.collection......
Yes, it is not really a booster. It goes over unity gain, but compared to a contemporary overdrive pedal, it is not so loud. But it adds nice harmonics and some sustain as well.
I don’t think it is exactly tbh, maybe if your amp already has a lot of distortion already you could use it to add extra gain/make your sound more focused and clear. It’s definitely more of a “classic rock/hard rock/early metal” then a thrash sound but there’s not rly a rule book either!!
I don’t know a ton about metal guitar tones but I know people were using Pro Co Rats and putting tubescreamers into very distorted amps a lot in the 80s. The tube screamer + high gain amp combo is still really popular, too.
My high school garage band used these in the late 70's because we couldn't afford tube amps and the choice of available pedals was very limited. They sucked then and they suck now. They sound metallic. Fingernails on chalkboard. More than two or three note chords get totally garbled. This is a rare case where vintage is not good.
No bass? This pedal adds some harmonics in the low frequency range and it really can sound quite fat. Yes it is fuzzy and works best with crunchy amps. I think Marshall is the preferred amp with this unit.
If Randy Rhoads used it, then it's good.
Dion R he used this and mxr 10 band eq. Through his fender champ 40
Dion R same but with dave murray
Jesse Tate He used Marshall plexi heads
With the mxr distortion plus and mxr chorus, delay, and 10 band eq
Actually he never used plexis he used jmp 100 watt super leads with the lead bright channels cascaded

Once he started playing Crazy Train I ordered one. Didn't even finish the video 😂
You know that this pedal was Randy Rhodes' main distortion box.

If Matt Pike used it on Dopesmoker, then it is in fact still good.
Some other famous last names who use(d) this: Mayer, Kulick, Molko, Kisser, Harvey, Gilbert, Yorke, Morello, Cook, Cobain, Vai, Moore, Smear, Ronson, Van Zandt &... Slash.
Jerry garcia
Wich Moore?
...and Kuepper👍🏿🔥🔥🔥
Sounds good with a micro chorus aswell
Great review. No talking about bs. Right to the point. Great channel. I just subscribed 👍🏼
With both dials maxed out, it appears to be holding back, like there is a volume gate set.

I wonder how this would work in front of jcm 800
Carlos actually used a charvel telecaster for metal health but I believe condition critical was with a flying v

My friends dad played drums in a glam metal band back in the 80s called LACE and the guitarist used this pedal all the time
Only one sound, but man it's a good one.
Volume all the way up, distortion on 5 o’clock 😎
Dude starting the video out with My Disease by Bullets and Octane! Well done!
I'm deciding between MXR+ and boss SD-1, I know one is distortion and the other is overdrive. I love Black Sabbath, but also Husked Du. What advice do you have?

It’s hard for me to pick between the RAT and the Distortion +. You might as well get both!!
Mxr d+ , ibanez st9 ....and many more ,...great pedals ...hope all the new players .kept it , plays it .. ..because , i want to buys all .soon.collection......
It's supposed to push an already distorted preamp.
If Dave Murray uses it , I don’t need to watch the entire video . 😂
Is that the Lee Malia guitar lol
If only he still used it, now the piano guy does everything.
Mine is an 80's Mustard Block Script with LED and it's not loud.
1N270 Germanium Diodes!

Shock Me? Nice.
hi i play post rock with some metal influences, something like Jesu or Slint, this pedal is good for the dirty parts? with the distortion at max?
Get both lol
Its a great pedal,my first when i started playing back in '79.been using the NUX plexi crunch since it came out, best distortion/od for $50 or less
RR's used it with a dirty amp tone. None of those guys from that era played on a clean channel.
Pls help me out is this pedal good for old school thrash metal? Pls

Sweet looking Epiphone Explorer. Which model is that?
Its the limited edition Lee Malia.
Hi. Is this pedal good for misfits and ramones and Punk songs ? Thanks
I think so, though it is a very bright pedal, so you might need to match it with the right guitar and amp.
I own one and play BOTH Misfits and Ramones songs and I verify that it's good for them👍🏿
Maaaaaaaannn that epiphone 🤯
No Dist+ without a Graphic EQ preferably the blue one :)
My MXR Distortion + has a significant amount of tone suck when bypassed. Am I the only one experiencing this?
No Jerry Band or, Grateful Dead!?
Do you even need it if your amp has a dirty channel?
Amazing little box. cranked plexi, the MXR with both knobs at 10 and a good strat = Yngwie!
Swords and Tequila distortion pedal.
Randy used it as an OverDrive. This pedal pushed his already cranked Marshall heads. That made the sound of Randy we all know!
Keep it on what the guidelines and what my mother told me
Spencer Camp
Randy's distortion pedal is my next buy. I have a hard time with distortion. I should have just got this year's ago
How does this thing sound on a Epiphone SG on a Fendet Champion?
My high school garage band used these in the late 70's because we couldn't afford tube amps and the choice of available pedals was very limited. They sucked then and they suck now. They sound metallic. Fingernails on chalkboard. More than two or three note chords get totally garbled. This is a rare case where vintage is not good.
Kyra Pass
video doesnt do it justice.
I've got that same guitar...... It's the shite !
Mwouahahahahaaa sooooo funny ! Thanks guy ;-)
Nah don't tune it's ok
Can't believe how much this sounds like a fuzz pedal - with no bass :) Ugh..
No bass? This pedal adds some harmonics in the low frequency range and it really can sound quite fat.
Yes it is fuzzy and works best with crunchy amps. I think Marshall is the preferred amp with this unit.
God, these things sound horrid. Shrill...brittle... I was hoping it would sound more magical than I remembered.
That's what gives it its presence in a band mix, though...
sounds awful… always though that pedal was good…
Guitar massively out of tune.
Rob Doran It’s drop d
MergedRipper I was noticing the G string I think.
Nope
