Just discovered your vlog and I honestly think it's the best one on this platform in showcasing HK street food culture. Your narration and videography hit all the right notes without any pretension or gimmickry. I was raised in Kowloon in the early 70s before emigrating to Canada and I am taken by the feeling of nostalgia you capture in your vlogs. Congratulations.
Welcome to the channel, and thank you for your incredibly kind words! We try to make these videos as authentic and genuinely reflective of the neighbourhoods/street food scenes as possible, so it gives us great pleasure to get such a comment as yours. We hope to continue to bring you nostalgia and memories of your childhood in our upcoming videos.
Watched your video and 15 minutes later I am at the Star Cafe enjoying my own bowl of noodles. Thank you for another great recommendation, can't wait for the next one!
What a heart attack until Sam dared to eat that VOMIT noodle in front of the camera ! And surprisingly Sam endorsed his approval that the noodle is an excellent meal. Without your guidance and recommendations, i guess it is very hard to find and locate that restaurant in that busy tourist area. We believe you Sam and we will try that noodle when we next visit Hong Kong ! Thanks !
Thank you as always Johnson for your great comment! The vomit noodles were indeed delicious (much better than the first look!) We're glad this video made you want to try this incredible traditional Hong Kong food!
Growing up in Hong Kong, I think I missed a lot of good food! Now in Texas, I rediscovered Hong Kong through watching your interesting videos! Thank you very much!
I used to go to this amazing building 20 years ago when it was full of cheap brothels. Not been for years. Never been to this little place though...will try! Looks like a timewarp and who wouldn't want to go back in time a few decades.
Hi James, thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed this video! That's amazing to learn about how the building has changed over the years, and we wish you a pleasant and delicious trip to Star Cafe!
@@HongKongHoods Yes, it really was a place for alternative activities 20 years ago, but I believe the ladies grew older and found husbands from punters (Happy endings indeed!) and the managers moved to Yuen Long and Tsuen Wan and enticed another generation of young ladies from Dongguan.
Hi Sam! Another Sam here loves your videos! I am from Hong Kong and now living oversea at the moment. Your videos are nostalgic and informative. My partner loves your videos too. She said it makes her want to go to HK as soon as the pandemic is over. We are glad that we found your channel. You deserve a millions subscribers. Please make a tour of beef brisket noodle soup in the future. We look forward to your new uploads ^^
Thanks for watching Samuel, and for your very kind words, it means a lot to us to know that you’re enjoying the videos! We will continue to make more, and thank you for the suggestion of beef brisket, that’s a great idea!
By giving the owners of these hidden places a voice to express their idea of food and sense history really catapulted your channel to a higher realm than just a tourist guide or being exotic for exotic sake. You always present them with context and with no condescension. Many of these other food/travel videos oftentimes reek of ethnocentrism. Your channel treat these people and places with dignity and respect which you in turn deserve the viewers' respect. You've done your homework and research but you also keep it lighthearted with a sense of humor on top of high production value. I'm so glad to have discovered your channel by accident. Your channel should have over a million subscribers! Keep going!
Thank you so much for the incredibly kind words! It's always been our ethos to first-and-foremost shed light on the places - and perhaps even more so the people - that make Hong Kong truly special and unique. Without sounding corny, it really has been amazing to meet a lot of these folks and not just learn about what they're doing, but also take in their outlooks and learn from their experience navigating this ever-changing city. It's a story we're very privileged to be able tot ell, and we'll keep going with it for as long as we can, documenting and promoting these facets of local culture. Thanks for watching, and more videos coming soon!
Tomatoes & Eggs are one of my favorite nutritional gourmet when I was a child. Thumbs up for the Star Cafe and those two beverages. I only wish they could move to an upper floor in that champagne flat rather than in the basement.
Hopefully this cafe is able to survive for long and that they can find a place in Tsim Sha Tsui. Thank you Sam for trying this food and giving your approval so that we can shed our inhibitions to eat the dish nicknamed - vomit noodles. It was interesting to hear the story from Mr.Lam and wishing him all success. Thank you once again for taking us through this amazing journey and love to Hong Kong
Thanks Satish, it was our pleasure to get acquainted with this cafe and try the delicious food on offer there! Glad you enjoyed the video, and indeed, long may Mr. Lam operate into the future!
Thanks for the video and recording these places before they unfortunately disappear or move location. We intend to experiment and see if we can create a home version of the dishes as we are unable to visit at the moment.
I like your videos my friend , The key is to never give up hope . Keep moving forward and believe in yourself . I send love and support 😍😍😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
As far as I am concerned, tomatoes noodles with mixed eggs is one of the simple home dishes that are not too difficult to make. That being said, that place certainly brings up lots of memories of old Hong Kong. It is definitely a good place for those who are interested in Hong Kong history. I'm not sure if it is still there by the time I watched this video! Hopefully I'll get to visit there soon!
Absolutely Jessica, a very traditional, homely meal that evokes feelings of childhood. Can’t recommend this place enough due to the food and atmosphere, so hope you can visit soon!
Hi Sam, new to your channel & have enjoyed every video TH-cam algorithm brings to my feeds so far. I grew up in HK and now living in California, your HK contents bring nostalgia & cathartic feelings. Is that your wife doing the interview in Chinese? Seems like she knows her stuff! How come you never put her in front of the camera? Would love to see both of you interact in front of the camera!
Thanks for watching and for the kind words, and welcome to the channel! Really glad you're finding the videos enjoyable and that they bring back memories for you. My wife does the interviews in Chinese, yes. That's a great idea, but I my wife would rather stay behind the camera for now. Might be able to convince her in the future!
First look I probably wouldn’t eat it but after knowing what it is I probably would, tomatoes and egg I already eat but with white rice sometimes with noodles. The name is what throws me off, I used to get carsick and throw up; that smell and taste in my mouth is something I’ll never forget. Knowing that smell then seeing that name it doesn’t go together
Thanks for watching Emily. It is purely a nickname affectionately given to the dish by locals. In truth there’s nothing vomit-like about the taste at all, just a good old flavour of Hong Kong 🇭🇰
Probably not to my taste the Hong Kong equivalent to an English greasy spoon but it has its charm and hope it survives well into the future. Great video keep it up!
Very interesting food and drinks. One comment from OpenRice said the tomato ‘low’ egg noodle is one I’d the four weirdest food in HK in the eyes of tourists. Perhaps you can continue the series and introduce the other three, to which I have no idea what they are.
hey, i read from google review that they will be closed in june/july 2024 will they relocate or closed down for good? i never been to hongkong and planning to try it when i ever to go there 😢 the staffs seems so lovely
I understand the development going on but hoping give a chance to those establishments a come back if the government permit then my suggestions as architect n interior myself elevate the facade & style with of course touched of Chinese looks so that bringing back elegant. Dying store for me should be given a chance because what people would like to see in any country is the genuine culture of Hong Kong.
Hey David thanks for watching, and I too hope places like this are given a chance. I think refurbishing them (when they’re in dire need of it) is great idea, especially in a way that is true to the history and culture of Hong Kong!
Looks yummy and timely as the cold season is now upon HK, will definitely go here to try this also. Mind sharing what the first bowl was called in the english menu? BTW, after we watched the other video on TST, we also went to Roll and Mari! Thanks for the reco! As always, quality content from HK Hoodz 😁

This dish in Chinese is called tomato egg noodle, not vomit noodle. I feel it is disrespectful to describe it as such. Tomato egg is a very popular comfort dish in Chinese cuisine, be it in soup, with rice or noodle. In general, I like yr channel b/c you go to hidden gems and allow vendors to talk about their stall's history, but I do not care for yr sensational renaming of this dish as "vomit noodle". Just saying...
Thank you for your comment and we’re sorry you feel this way. The fact remains though that Star Cafe’s tomato egg noodles have been referred to for years by locals as ‘vomit noodles’ and, far from derogatory, this nickname comes from a place of affection and adoration. If you watch the video in its entirety, I’m sure you’ll agree that our coverage of Star Cafe is entirely reverential. As with all our videos we aim here to respectfully promote what we view as an underexposed hidden gem, and if a catchy title means more clicks and more potential visitors to this place, that’s fine with us.
