I used SPAX screws for this project which are my favorite - here's why I like them so much: bit.ly/206pUhK. You can give them a try with this SPAX assortment screw pack: amzn.to/1K7Pw9m

I've seen the back cushion - head board done on several channels, but yours is so simple and easy to follow. So glad to see a video from you and can't wait for the next one! Big Hugs

Ok folks, I used this video as a guide to make a backrest for my existing bench seat in my kitchen and have a few tips that I hope will make it easier for others. First, this video doesn't include a list of material needed, which for me meant going back to the hardware store several times. Make a list of things needed for every step as you go through the video first. Second, I suggest NOT using plywood because I learned it is almost always warped (I wasted $20 for it and lots of effort trying to straighten it out). I ended up using pegboard, which worked out fine. Third, I suggest sticking to 1" foam instead of "upgrading" to 2" because I think it would look better. If you DO use a different thickness of foam, be sure to adjust the additional dimensions to your cut material to adequately wrap it around the edges. Also, unless you want a sharp edge on the backrest edges, do wrap the batting around the edges, which I didn't think would look good on 2" foam so the edges look very tailored. Oh, and you can cut foam with a serrated bread knife if you need to but be sure to hold the knife perfectly perpendicular to the edge or the edges will be uneven on your finished product. Fourth, I suggest using a fabric WITHOUT a vertical or horizontal pattern as it adds another level of difficulty in keeping the pattern straight when you staple it onto the hard material. Fifth, buy screws that will not be too long or short to attach the lath to the pegboard - measure these while at the store to buy the right length of screws. You'll notice that the demonstration shows that the screw holes have been pre-drilled where the screws get attached to keep the lath from splitting. This isn't mentioned as an extra step in the video. Since the lath doesn't actually show on your finished product, you might not care about a little splitting but I thought I'd mention it so you don't panic if it happens. And finally, I bought industrial strength Velcro to attach my back rest to the wall but didn't need to use anything because it fit so perfectly.
    Good luck you DIYers! :)

Hi, Thanks for your comment. I already have a cushion headrest that I simply want to use as a backing for bench ? How do you suggest I attach head board.

Folded post-it note??!! You are just on another level! Lol. Sheesh. I was hoping that grass cloth was going to be the next vid, my eyes bugged out when I saw that textured wall behind you! How. do. you. do. it.

I've been putting off making an upholstered headboard, but this is so simple I don't have any excuses not to do it anymore! Love the little tips like the pin, zigzag, and post it.

Using pegboard was a bit of time-saving genius! And I thought spray painting the leather covered vintage buttons was very creative.

You're basically a genius! Your ideas are super easy and I would have never thought of them! Most projects I see and think "I could never do them, it's too difficult or too time consuming." Yours, on the contrary, seem so practical and for any novice, and make a statement without taking a ton of time, which is nothing short of awesome! Thanks soooo much for sharing :)

A blue pattern pillow and blue buttons may have been nice to set off from the colors in your kitchen. Either way, nicely done.
