Make these custom drum shades with poster board and these supplies: Embroidery hoops (wood): amzn.to/2It0AEn Brads: amzn.to/2U7wDfj Mod Podge: amzn.to/2VCYeGD
Unbelievably WONDERFUL. I'll be moving to a new place in a couple of months and it'd be nice to get a SOLID plan together to reduce the seemingly months it takes to whip a cheap, no frills apartment into shape.
You are fabulous and I am so glad I came across your videos. Just Fabulous! You go girl. I am a renter on a budget and these ideas I am getting from you are a world of wonderful to me. Thank you.
Your video is one of the best instructional videos I've ever seen. It's 15 minutes I know, but every second is spent with important information and very clear instructions. Great work
Lots of great tips. My favorite is the use of binder clips to clamp the work together. What didn't work was using the outer embroidery hoop to outline the diffuser. Unlike the inner hoop, the outer loop was uneven on its own. Thank you very much!
Very cool. I work with electric. Light fixtures are the "fountain soda" of home improvement and lighting stores. It costs very little, the light fixture itself is super simple and cheap, they add decorations to it and change you a fortune. It's really ridiculous what the profit margins are on them. Thanks again and great video!
I've only recently found your channel and I'm rapt! I found you at the perfect time as I'm about to redecorate my house on a very tight budget and you've given me inspiration and some very good ideas on how to achieve what I'm after. You have so many good ideas and clear, well presented tutorials that not only suit renters but also people like me who own but don't have a huge amount of money to freshen up their houses. Thank you so very much!
I like putting in the diffuser before hanging the shade - it makes it easier to get it to sit flush around the rim of the embroidery hoop. As for hanging the shade, it's true that there isn't much room to work with to get the last hook in but you can bend and reshape the hooks to get it to fit and make the shade level. I've installed these many times and haven't had any problems, but every light fixture is different. Hope this helps!
LOVE this! I needed an idea to replace two old, UGLY ceiling fans...this is it! This is not super easy but if I follow your directions I can do this!....Thank you!
I have fluorescent ones in my ceiling fixtures and for my drum shade pendant lamps, I use Phillips AmbientLED bulbs which are great - they hardly give off any heat and they work with dimmers.
Thanks for sharing this! Just finished making my own and I'm so happy with the result.!I used a translucent gift wrapping paper and skipped the light diffuser but it's still very good. Thanks again for the tutorial! :)
I'm going to try this! For those who are lazy like me and don't want to cut through that tough diffuser material, Michael's sells large individual vellum sheets :)
This is EXACTLY what I've been trying TV to figure out. I have these s as me discussing light fixtures in my hallway. I hate it. I can5 wait to get started. This is another good pandemic project. Thanks for being so precise. I might have to watch I tdd again hecsusecIm hot that clear on how to space out the three hanging hooks. I'll figure it out though. Thanks a million.
Thank you for your help! This is exactly what I needed :) PS- even more stoked about learning this from another woman like myself! You're a bad ass ❤️ thanks again
I just love all the pointers you give throughout to help give us confidence to get it done without running into preventable mistakes and to make it as foolproof as possible. I want to add a drum to already existing chandelier. Any advice on how to do that in a sleek way? I wish you spoke on how to make sure the fabrics are heat tolerant for those of us not using fluorescent lights. Thanks again.
Do you think I could cut the embroidery hoop in half to make a semi-circle drum for an ugly wall light instead of a ceiling light? Thanks! Also thanks for such detailed instructions!
I have a tip. In an apartment, keep the original shades and covers to the light fixtures for when you move out. If you lose those, the landlord will charge a damage fee. I have had it happen to me.
You could skip the plastic diffuser altogether by just stretching/gluing the fabric to the hoop before adding the poster board and wallpaper. PS Be sure to use low-heat LED bulbs -- not incandescent!!
The main thing to think about with the fabric is how much light you want to show through. White poster board does let light shine through and the color and thickness of the fabric will impact how much you end up seeing through the shade. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
I love how in every Video just when you Show a Step You Always have a Second Step that takes each piece from Nice to Fantastic. I just bought some Silver Rub n Buff for a Lg Gold Trimmed Mirror. Im a bit leary to use it as I do not want it to look like I just Slapped some Cheap Silver Paint on it. Id love to know your thoughts. TFS
You can install eye hooks in the ceiling around the recessed lighting fixture and hang the drum shade from that but I would only use LED light bulbs in the recessed fixture so there isn't too much heat generated and leave some space between the fixture and the ceiling so there is some airflow.
Every light fixture is different so I can't say what would work for yours - I do recommend using LED light bulbs since they give off the least amount of heat.
Great video. I'd been trying to figure out how to cover up my ugly brass fixture and hadn't ever thought of putting eye-hooks into the ceiling. I do wonder whether a drum lampshade from Target or whatever could be spray-painted and substituted for her nice wallpaper drum, but attached the same way with eyescrews.
Every light fixture is different but in general, I recommend leaving enough distance between the light fixture and the poster board to allow for good air circulation to let any heat generated dissipate and I also recommend avoiding light bulbs that generate a lot of heat, like incandescent ones. Thanks for watching!
What a thorough, concise and easy to follow DIY video! Loved it. My only 2 questions are, A. Are the glues you used heat resistant? I use incandescent bulbs because fluorescent and led bulds both my eyes and don't give the right light. Anyhow...the incandescent bulbs get hot so that's why I asked. B. Did you consider using a spray adhesive ss opposed to the glue you used? If so, what influenced your decision?
I wish I had found this tutorial before I made a drum shade for a chandelier. It was difficult to find parts for a 24" shade. My biggest problem is that I did not have stiff paper between the upper and lower rings. Next time, I'll use your helpful tutorial! Thanks.
This is very nice! Any suggestions for transforming 12x12 recessed lights? Your DIY is more affordable than hiring an electrician to remove this thing and install a new junction box and I'd likely have to hire someone to re-do the sheet rock.

Awesomeness! This is the easiest, most straight forward tutorial on shades I've seen. Thanks!
It's hard to describe how ideas come to me but I will say that necessity is the mother of invention!

The shades look very sophisticated--beautiful.

Thanks for the tutorial.
I don't have a hot knife but maybe that could work for the diffuser...?
Thanks! You can find them online - I've added a link to some embroidery hoops on Amazon.com but I'm not sure on the shipping costs to you!
I can't wait to try this 🤗
Me watching: These projects are ultra cool!
Also me, at the end: Hmm, is there any way to just buy these 2 things?

I believe that LEDs are even cooler than fluorescent.
Wow that's very clever :-)
Amazing! Thank you
Thank you. Your video is really helpful. I just wonder what it is the bigger light board. I looked for all days but I couldn't.
