The wild sika deer in Japan's Nara Park have been under government protection since 1957. What do you think about the relationship between humans and these deer?
Seems like a beautiful place to visit. Would be great to be able to feed and pet the deer (if they don't try to bite me that is). Thanks National Geographic for sharing.
I visited last year. The deer are very friendly and actually bow to you for food. Expect to spend up to a full afternoon at nara park. Just a 30 to 40min train ride from osaka
zephanish They're friendly but not domestic. I've seen one rip a guidebook off of a tourist's hand and actually EAT it page by page like nothing. Goes to show they're here for the food, and not much else.
We're so happy to hear this video reminded you of your visit to Japan's Nara Park, Mihai! We hope you get the chance to see these wild deer again soon.
Isn't this park wonderful, Vincent? In addition to the friendly deer residents, Nara Park encompasses major temples and shrines, including Todaiji Temple, Kohfukuji Temple and Kasugataisha Shrine.
We're glad you enjoyed this video! Nara Park is considered one of the "Places of Scenic Beauty" by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology.
I already visit last year during sakura trip these dear may be look cute but they quite aggressive if you has biscuit in your hand they will follow you until you feed them or some of them chew you pant and even you gonna buy biscuit from shop around Nara temple they will wait behind you…not one but many(4-5 dear)
What I like about animals is that what we describe as pain that they cause to our bodies, to them it's not. Something I learnt by watching some videos of Richard and his lions here in South Africa. Example, they play rough, but to a lion that is not rough, it is quite enjoyable. Great video by the way.
We're so happy to hear this video brought back fond memories of your previous visit to Nara Park! We hope you get to go see these wild deer again soon.
These deers have been coexisting with Japanese people for over 2000 years. It’s not only from 1950s that’s only legally protected but these are sacred deers. There are Japanese folktales about these deers. Though they eat these deer cookies sold to tourists for snacks and treats, they mainly live in a few mountains in forest and they eat plants in there as a main diet though they own the town. They’re freely sleeping nearby planters on a street and they quite often come into many shops (they don’t destroy merchandise or anything). They only bite of you hesitate to give cookies though they can see you holding them. I mean these aren’t pets but wild but sacred deers. I’ve been to this place so many times I live in Japan, we go there as an elementary school trip in grade 5 or 6 before graduating from elementary school.
U know what’s even more amazing? Even though they had to build that temple with tons of wood meaning that they would have to cut down tons of trees. There is still a forest around the place.
Lol these temples have been standing for thousands of years. And due to unique traditional Japanese building techniques they do last ages, with proper repairs. Westerners are strange in that way, they don’t even dare to say about their recently built churches with tons of wood used to wastefully with nails that break down overtime and never last as long as these Japanese temples as these don’t use any nails. Yet you dare to point out these Japanese temples and shrines older than some countries in Europe.
0:40 reminds me of the way to get to the Ephesus library and the temple of Diana which are surrounded by the stone stele and engravings of the ancient times.
Crazy how the deer act so differently around people in Japan than in the Inland NW here. Here they will kick you if you try to pet them (especially around fawns), assuming you can even get close. Nowhere near as bad as moose though😂
smag61306 generally deer hide their poo they are prey, instinctually they poo with there back to something like a tree and they kick dirt and grass over it and they are rather clean they don’t want to walk through poo anymore then you do.
Here in India we have a rat temple . Thousands of rats clinging about on you. Each is fedvwith milk and rice etc....plus some of the saints eat the half eaten rat food.😅😅

It's always good when wildlife is protected by governments...
according to Wikipedia, due to the increased population the deer are culled.
I love deer such peaceful creatures I have whitetail deer in my yard everyday because I feed them good morning to everyone from Canada 🙋
Thank you for sharing, Sarah! Japan's Nara Park has over 1,200 sika deer, all respected as symbols of the city and protected as national treasures.

Yes, you definitely have to be careful when feeding these wild sika deer because they just might take a bigger bite than you expect!
Went there 11 years ago, It was cool, They have a hole u can crawl through, no joke!
The deer at 0:10 , “Well guys, another day another tourist.”
Been there and would definitely visit again!

Deers are so gorgeous and sweet loving creatures, very nice they are protected and safe there. I love deers so much 💜💜💜💜💜💜
We love them too, Vanna! Did you know some deer have even learned how to bow to visitors to ask to be fed with deer crackers?
The animals are beautiful
I was at this temple last year and the deers are so cute. I even cuddlen with one :)

奈良公園だ‼️
Really wild

Goodmorningnaraparkjapan
Shikamaru Nara now makes sense!
*Shikamaru because they're "shika" deer
I was just thinking that, lol!
هل يوجد هنا محبي الطيور
Looks like a nice and interesting place
So this is where Kishimoto got the idea for the Nara Clan Forest :o

That's great and a nice video and all that, but why the terrible music? It also doesn't fit the mood of the footage imo.
they wild deers came for honeymoon
How is it possible to walk around there given the insane droppings they must produce.

You use your eyes.
soo it's like a cat? cat can hide their own corpse. that's why it's extremely rare to see cat's corpse on street
Dzulfiqar Bagas Tito huh who said anything about a corpse?
Candy Lanes i talk about that deer poo thing. it's same like cat. cat hide their own body when they die..
this is some weird phenomenon.
it's like it's straight out of a fairy tail
Shikamarus sacred land
Bambi takes a trip to Japan 🇯🇵 🦌,
What about ticks that carry lyme disease. Do these people get bit being so close? You wouldn't see this in ny.
This is shikamaru’s clan’s temple
I can't be the only person wondering how such a high population hasn't led to disease in the entire herd...
That's not wild dear. Those are tamed deer, just like in your local park.
Sooo, basically a bunch of pigeon in the form of deer. Got it.
Can't wait for hunting season
Just wait until the Deer acquire a taste for Human flesh.
Food just walking around
deers in other countries though
I was about to say china, but Japan.
Nice venison :d
Time to go vegan.
Delicious venison
