When I Realized What it Meant I Was Amazed: The Mark Series pt 31 (

  • At first it seems like this story is dropped awkwardly into Mark 9 with no apparent reason. But studying the passage more carefully shows that it may well be a deliberate act on the part of God to illustrate the need for faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus. This poor boy, afflicted by a demon for years, seems to be a representation of Jesus on the cross and how challenging it would be for the disciples to trust in a Messiah who would die. This passage also has something that is hugely important to me personally; the father of the child crying out, “I believe, help my unbelief!” The fact that Jesus received the conflicted faith of this man shows me that He receives us when our faith is equally conflicted. Thank God for His patience.
    This is part 31 in the ongoing Mark series, here’s the whole thing! • The Gospel of Mark Ser...

    When I wandered from the faith, I came to the point of deconversion to atheism. Standing in my mind at that spiritual precipice, I felt the despair so many atheists describe. I called out to God, "I'm at a point where I can't believe in you. If you are real, I can't have faith. Please remain faithful to me." This was a turning point where God started showing me what was wrong with all the arguments were that led me away and with my own perceptions of God and the church that led me away. God helped me in my unbelief.

    “All I need is a better reason to believe than disbelieve.” That right there is gold. I struggle with my faith in the Lord. Sometimes, leaving a question unanswered unsettles me. I feel like I am not a Christian when I allow these doubtful thoughts in my head. I feel like I have let God down exponentially. I have to remember to stay grounded in Him and to trust Him with every fiber of my being. Thomas is a good parallel to this. The same disciple that said, “Let us also go, so we may die with Him.” is the same disciple that doubted the resurrected Lord. It astonishes me. It makes us realize that we are not perfect, but He has that already figured out for us. Thank you Mike. I love your teachings.

    46:58 This discussion about “prayer” or “prayer and fasting” was brought up in the book: The Case For Christ. In the book, one of the scholars stated that around the year 300AD there was a big push toward monasticism. (Which was identified as people becoming Monks…monk, monasticism). From which, fasting was highly valued. The book stated that before 300 AD there are no manuscripts with “prayer and fasting,” and that the fasting part was added in during this time.
    It’s also a great evidence toward knowing that the scriptures have not changed much over time, as we can see what changes have been made based on the dates of the manuscripts. In fact, only 1% of the changes that have been made and copied over time change the meaning of the text, and 0% of these change any core components of Christianity. My source is again: The Case For Christ by Lee Strobel.

    "I don't think you're being like Jesus, Jesus."
    Pretty convicting. I hate how people try to mold Him into who they want Him to be instead of who He is - who we need Him to be... Then I remember I do it too.
    How much longer will we be - no, will I be a faithless and perverse generation. Maranatha. Come quickly, Lord.

    Personally, I have been dealing with Psychological doubt. I came from many different church denominations and currently struggle to even understand who God is at a fundamental level. Which, as a Christian is very scary because I don't know how to even address Him properly. Currently, I believe that GOD is Triune upon evaluating various resources earnestly. Yet, a terrible fear subsides within me and for the sake of the church that this view of God may be wrong. As a result, the possibility of the church being the embodiment of idolatrous worship scares me beyond belief. The denominations I came from were the Jehovah Witnesses and the Latter Day Saints, I currently attend a "non-denominational" church.
    If anyone reads this, is there any advice that you may have?

    • @MikeWinger
      @MikeWinger  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      That fear you feel is understandable, especially given your past. Here’s a few thoughts for you.
      1) your prior belief was based on trusting the Watchtower or the LDS organization. Your current belief is arrived at due to reflection on scripture and letting the plain text speak without an organizational authority telling you what it means.
      2) There are abundantly clear indications of the deity of Jesus (which these groups tend to focus on) in scripture. The discovery of the Granville-Sharps rule in Greek has made this case even stronger in passages where Jesus is clearly called God.
      3) It’s not healthy to be scared of “what if I’m wrong” when you don’t have good reason to think you are wrong and you do have good reason to think you are right.
      4) combat these fears by remembering the nature of the organizations that instilled the fears in the first place.

    I know someone who suffers from epilepsy and an elder in the church used this passage to claim that the affliction is actually a demonic possession and not epilepsy per se.

    • @caroleimani9754
      @caroleimani9754 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Epilepsy "looks like" demon possession. When I was in Junior High School, way out in the country in the 1960's there was a boy in our class who would have "Grand Mal" (Spelling?) seizures. He would fall on the floor and start thrashing around, kicking his shoes on the hardwood floors. We were told to stand up and walk out of the room. The other kids told me that was their "monthly John Doe Practice Drill." I guess before I got there, this happened quite often. Eventually they had a Special Education School, but it took them a few years to build it..As I look back, I wonder if this was demonic, a chemical imbalance, or both. Nobody seemed scared. They were used to it.

The Lord showed me that pretending Scriptures don't say what they clearly do wasn't the answer and He brought me to the place where I could say "I don't understand but I'll trust you anyway and maybe one day You'll show me or maybe not". If the disciples couldn’t cast the demons out with prayer, and Jesus once said the reason his disciples do not fast because the bridegroom is with them, it would make complete sense that Jesus said “prayer and fasting” in this particular story.

  • @farmerson6558
    @farmerson6558 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I saw a video recently in which was described that the rabbinical method of the time, to cast out demons required that the demon first be forced to identify itself by name. With a mute child, the usual method would not work, since the demon would speak through the voice of the victim, to identify itself. Because Jesus was able to cast out the demon, he proved he was the messiah.

    As mentioned in the other comments, Mike used a Bible translation that omitted the "and fasting" part of "prayer and fasting". Other translations have fasting included. Given the flow of the story, prayer and fasting is the more likely rendering. Another point of contention about this passage, the Cessationist would say that the miracles have ceased after Jesus and the Apostles, but in this passage, the disciples couldn't cast the demon out when Jesus was away. The miracles were not happening while Jesus was still walking the earth. When Jesus came back, He was noticeably irritated there was not the faith necessary to cast the demon out. This is a good indication that this is the same reaction Jesus would have with the one who believes in Cessationism, that you are not only faithless, but perverse in the way you twist the teachings of Jesus. Miracles in the minds of many have ceased not because miracles are no longer possible for the time we're in, but because of the way you believe. Mark 6:5-6.

    If God coming down and becoming human was a means of God making himself relatable to us humans...
    ( not that that’s the only reason)
    Then the only thing we could never relate with him on is being a sinner...... he will never know what it’s like to be a sinner with a God above him that disapprove of his sin, he also will never feel the shame that we feel when realizing that we’ve sinned against God

    • @OneWingedShark

      No!
      He bore our sin in his own body and put them to death, bearing the wrath of almighty and holy God. As the perfect sacrifice for sin, he was rejected (he who knew no sin was made sin) unto his own death. Jesus knows above all others what it is like to face the disapproval of God for sin, and that sin was not even his own!

    Some Bible versions leave out an extremely important part of Mark 9:29... Jesus full statement was "this kind can come forth by nothing, but prayer AND FASTING." Fasting is key in spiritual warfare. Jesus referenced fasting many times. Also, why should we think people harming themselves is ever on their own and not always because of evil spirits? We know God doesn't make mistakes. To me, if we believe some people solely desire to hurt themselves without an evil spirit upon them (not necessarily in them) then that means God made a flaw in us.

      Fasting is not in the oldest original manuscripts. It was likely a scribe who added the fasting part. Maybe to be pious. I don't know. But we certainly don't need to rely on words that were not originally there. Truly, it breaks my heart that there have been so many extra added words and verses in the Bible. It makes it difficult to prove infallibility that way when I speak to others and even sometimes to myself.

    I was doing a reading of the gospels around Christmas and “ help my unbelief” hit me. Like you said , probably read it before but it was the right season to relate to it. I shared the verse with friends and it was the most commented, liked, loved verse I ever posted. It’s like when someone asks the question everyone in the class wants to ask but dares not.

    Immediately after God's despatching Moses and Elijah to lastly impending miraculous, Jesus's utmost humbled like he always was before God's will declaring no other way than Prayer's meeting Our needs at times of crisis by Faith's alone if how much Devil's entangled World's still to be freed?! Take away is you think not there's a Scientific way atheist can seek God's but Spiritual one's seek after Holiest of names nearby out of harm's way...

    A serious question: Doesn't the phrase "from childhood" indicate that the boy is no longer "in" childhood? Because it says this had been happening for a long time. So perhaps he is a teen or even a young adult, with a trouble that started in childhood, and continues past it.

    Maybe in other instances just reading scripture was enough to dispel the demons, but when it didn't work this time it didn't occur to them to call upon Jesus/God for help because they didn't see him present, but he didn't need to be present in body to accomplish anything and they should have had the faith to know that. Just speculating.

    I was married to an atheist but was saved 20 years ago, while I was married my spiritual growth was stunted, we divorced two years ago and I am also almost two years self-harm free. Does that mean I was saved and during that time that I thought my spiritual growth was stunted I had actually lost my salvation for a time?

    In the New King James Version of the bible...vs 29... it says " This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting". The "and fasting" is the added words. Is this important to add or subtract in other versions?

    I believe there will be people in heaven that we will be surprised about who were saved at some weak point in their lives. I think when they find themselves in the presence of the Lord even they momentarily will be surprised, then relieved, then joyous.
    That weak point, to some, would be the most humble point to God as they momentarily put their faith in Christ.
    We have some friends who are struggling with a friend of theirs who recently committed suicide in her sixties. She was a very accomplished professor at one time but had struggled with alcoholism and a broken past from family. A final letter indicated she was planning suicide for some time thinking she would release her friend’s burdens.
    The only thing I hoped for privately was that at some point in her childhood or life she had that momentary weakness or humility that brought her to believe in Jesus Christ.
    Only God knows the heart and who believes; He doesn’t need our approval because we think we can stick our noses into someone else’s life and find their faith somewhere deep in the soil. God knows exactly who he has given life to.
