The question should have been, why does the EMD engine in spite of being a 2stroke engine smoke less than ALCO engine which is a 4stroke engine? We see normally that old 2stroke petrol engines smoke a lot and that is due to two major causes. One being the mixture of petrol and engine oil that is burnt in the cylinder, engine oil being smokey. The other reason is that the simple 2stroke technology that leads to incomplete combustion in the cylinder due to the combination of power and exhaust stroke in to one. So how can we refine the two stroke engine? (1) Don't mix fuel and engine oil. Have a separate engine lubrication pump and reservoir. (2) microprocessor controlled injection of fuel and air mixture directly in to the cylinder to improve combustion and timing and there by less smoke. It may be super or turbocharged to improve efficiency. Being a 2stroke engine it already has double the power for the same displacement. This is what EMD has done, fine tuned the 2stroke technology for diesel engine.
ALCO is an old diesel technology 4stroke engine, like your old TATA trucks, smokey and polluting. It can also be fine tuned by microprocessor controlled fuel injection for full/better combustion and addition of super/power charger. Then youwill get a GE engine that is clean burning, fuel efficient 4stroke engine.

A nice attempt but along with some accurate information, there was some highly inaccurate information. In two stroke actually more fuel is used since it is firing twice as fast as a 4 stroke. Also since two stroke engines don't use overhead valves, they are less fuel efficienct. That is the reason for the difference in sound. Two stroke engines also produce more but not twice the power of a four stroker per unit of engine displacement. Both Alco and EMD use a V16 engine with similar RPMs but the WDM3A will produce about 67% the power of the WDP-4D.
Alco is about 50 year old technology. Diesel technology has evolved in that time. Common Rail, Direct vs indirect injection, electronic control of the fuel injectors, fuel-air mix etc. The turbo charger is driven by exhaust gases and compresses the inlet gases for more fuel and therefore more power from the same displacement of engine. All these features are found in virtually every modern diesel car sold in India today except they are four stroke engines.
The turbocharger produces that "whine" metallic sound in the EMD.

The trouble with many a Indian youtubers and Quorans today is that every half literate guy thinks himself expert enough to teach others on technical subject they aren't experienced in , nor do they bother to really research deeply.
People are more interested in speaking even if gibberish. Very few people really bother to really learn about something and then share what they got.

Sir, if 4 stroke railway engines ALCOS emit more smoke than 2 stroke EMDs, then this same logic should be extended to 2 stroke and 4 stroke motorcycles, which is not the case. Why??

    • @ravikakhandki7594
      @ravikakhandki7594 5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

This advantage is only for low speed industrial diesel engines, not high speed petrol two/four stroke bike engines. Incase of a bike engine the two strokes produced more power for same displacement but threw out unburnt fuel air mixture leading to heavy pollution. The modern pollution norms killed these two strokes. Incase of large capacity low revving diesels, the two stroke turbo/supercharged engine is actually less polluting and more fuel efficient compared to their four stroke counterpart

Why GE locomotives use 4 stroke diesel engines?
Why now EMD - CAT has shifted from their long standing 2 stroke engines to 4 Stroke engines recently?
Petrol engines are also direct injection engines from almost 15 years! Carburettors are history now.

Cars trucks buses dont use 16 cylinder engines.
You cant compare a car engine with locomotive engine.
Loco diesel engine can go to maxm 1200 rpm only but a general car petrol engine can go upto 6000 rpm.
Yes petrol engine have GDI(gasoline direct injection) technology but it is not widely used till now. Till now general cars which consists of petrol engine have MPFI technology which is indirect injection, not direct injection.
Yes carburetors were removed from cars in India in last part of 90's but till now it is used in 2 wheelers.
2 stroke petrol engines were widely used in 2 wheelers not 4 wheelers.
U cant mix the requirement of a railway loco engine with a Automobile engines.
In Automobile engines, most mordern technologies, systems has developed & applied but in loco engine the technology is far behind in comparison with automobile engines due to reliability purpose.

GE has produced more powerful, fuel efficient and cleaner four stroke railway engines.
Now, EMD has moved on to four stroke engines from their earlier two strokers.
The reason why Alco locos smoke heavily is, they are 1960s technology (from cam shafts, valves to fuel injection systems everything is very old), turbo spools up slowly and starts spinning only at higher RPM of the engine, no matter how much ever our CLW & RDSO refined them.
Regardless of the size of the engine, 4 stroke is any day cleaner technology when compared to 2 stroke engine of the similar era, as a four stoker burns fuel for every two rotations whereas a two stoker burns fuel at every rotation.
However, if you compare 1960s 4 stroke engine with 1990s 2 stroke engine, 2 stroke wins.
The smoke in Alco locos can be reduced by making the turbo electrically assisted, but it draws power from the alternator which is feeding the power to the traction motor.

Amith ji... Thank you very much for your informative video 🙏
    I need one information.
I have seen in train where they write like this. Bhavnagar-Bandra terminus-Jamnagar. How it works ?? What's the logic behind this?? How it's possible?? Hope you will clarify my doubts. 🙏

EMD is awesome. It's almost like an aeroplane. Alco's chugging sound is also good.
