Seems like yesterday I’d take my son who is the same age as Riley to the old Carlsbad skatepark by the fire station and see Tony babysitting Spencer while Riley skated. I never approached and just sat a ways away watching my kid skate. Tony was just being a dad like the rest of us.
there’s no occupancy in pro skateboarding for nepotism. you’re either rad or you’re not. people used to accuse Tony of this, with his dad (Frank Hawk) being a skateboarding association president. but, le crème rises to the top. posers will always be able to spot…that’s one constant.
Rileys the man, always dig his skate parts. I love how he married Frances Cobain. I started skating in 87 and by 91 skating was dead, grunge really helped skating be more accepted by the main stream. Because the mainstream all went grunge in those years. When grunge broke with Nirvana. Even though nirvana has nothing to do with skating. The rare kids who did skate like me in that era appreciated how grunge and skaters where close knit being we dressed the same etc. I've never really heard anyone talk about this so maybe it was just me. But the popularity of grunge really helped skating when skating was very dead. Dressing like a skater was not cool and skating was looked down on. Little known fact. I remember when nirvana broke and hearing at my skatepark in Peoria IL in 1991 called Airwaves, over and over again. It was the fall/winter before Plan B Questionable video came out. I would hear that Nirvana song everywhere I went especially over and over again at our indoor skatepark. Grunge and skating went hand in hand back then. Also the fact I just lived in Seattle the last 25 years. I remember the article in Thrasher about Riley being born and when he was a little kid. Great to be in the future looking back!
The entire Hawk family has had to work EXTRA hard in the skateboarding industry due to ignorant perceptions of nepotism. In the end, their skills and influence are undeniable. Eat it, kooks.
Met Riley over ten years ago. So quiet, so humble. Amazing skateboarder.

Hard to be nepotistic when it comes down to a an actual skill.
Don't think an activity like skateboarding has the luxury for that.
skateboarding is easy

I would normally have thought that, I'll be honest, but, I found out who Riley was AFTER seeing his part. I remember thinking, ok, bird baby rips.
