It never seizes to amaze me that even in 45, both the IJN and IJA still heavily favored the socalled desicive battle that would throw the enemy into chaos and utter defeat. Even when the entire war so far had shown that the desicive battle never materialised despite carefully planning for it on all atolls and in all campaigns. Even the very first attempt, the attack on Pearl in 41, had proven to be anything but desicive. At the same time, it also showes a remarkable lack of adaptability and capability to evolve tactics from lessons learned. It's almost the same we see with the Russian armed forces today. They keep using the same tactics. Never wavering in their relentless determination to overcome an enemy by throwing shere numbers into the fray to overwhelm that enemy. And yet, that enemy never stops for one minute to play according to the rules of the Russians, but instead keeps coming up with new ideas and variations on tactics to lure these huge numbers into killing zones where they can achieve little else than squandering the vast majority of those numbers for a meter or 2 at best. If they keep this up, I suspect that by the time they have captured half of Ukraine, more than half to 2/3 of the total male population of Russia has been killed or incapacitated permanently, by which point Russia will not be able to even hold on to just a few miles of Ukrainian territory. Let alone just defending actual Russian territory. Of course it will never come to that. The war will be over one way or other long before, and not like Putin wants it to end. Events so far has already shown that he is not even capable of achieving that goal anymore if he throws in every last scrap of his armed forces with their total lack of proper equipment and training and weaponry.
The proximity fuse detected electrical conduction, like metal airplanes. It used parts from a hearing aid. It would trigger approaching wet, but not dry, ground. 🎉
