    Blade Runner 2049 was my favorite movie of the year... easily one of the best sci-fi movies I have seen in a while. For video games, Horizon Zero Dawn has totally grabbed me and is one of my favorite games now from the current generation. So happy to see a new IP that is interesting. :-)

  • @sentinelmoonfang
    @sentinelmoonfang 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Seriously? Not one person mentioned Bladerunner 2049? That is without a doubt the best late sequel to date, and while I haven't seen Shape of Water yet, is to me unquestionably the best movie of the year. Visually it's stunning, it tells a new story that feels completely at home in the established universe and shares themes without retreading the first film. Denis Villeneuve is without a doubt my favorite up and coming director. Hell, they even did an astounding job with the score, using the familiar synth themes Vangelis used in the first movie and reworking them to great effect to perfectly capture the grungy, yet beautiful feeling of the world... If you are a sci-fi fan, then you have no excuse for having not seen this movie.
    And for video game recommendations... I highly suggest Night in the Woods. That was my favorites of the year. The gameplay is a little lackluster, but the writing is fantastic and it features some very three-dimensional, well developed characters.

    • @KabukiKid
      @KabukiKid 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Amen! Blade Runner 2049 was my favorite of the year too. I also now want to see everything Villeneuve has done. I thought Arrival was another fantastic sci-fi movie, so I want to see what else he has done! :-)

      That is the actual best sci-fi movie of 2017 (at least better than Gaurdians of the Galaxy 2 or Star Wars The Last Jedi), but these guys aren't movie critics. They have families and it sounds like they go to the movies with their families, so I don't expect them to see many R rated movies. At some point they may get a chance to watch it, but maybe not this year.

    • @BigWetTits1

  • @dvc1190

    Zelda BotW at #1 is probably the only thing I agree with, but at the same time I think Tom, Zee, and Sam deserve a pass for not thinking too critically about non-table top game things. I can tell by the content they produce that they don't have much time to delve into movies, video games, or other pop culture things. If you're watching this, its because you want to see what these guys like, but not on a critical level, more like hearing what a friend said he/she likes. Therefore, they can't be wrong in any of their picks. That said, saying Star Wars is #1 is a lot like hearing a non-gamer say their favorite board game is Monopoly. It's not that they're "wrong", but more like they have no idea of what better things are out there.

    Based on what Zee said, sounds like the person who directed Legion needs to do the next Dune remake. The problem with Dune is that half the book is people's thoughts. If the Legion guy has that nailed, let him take it on.

    Yes, Legion was/is AMAZING. The energy and plot, the acting, the tone, the look, the writing, the 2 to 3 episode story arcs, the mystery, the 70's vibe, the dialogue, it was all amazing!!! The fact that it wasn't like X-Men, even better, we have enough of that.

    Last Jedi completely ruined all the story and character building in force awakens. Also filled with plotholes. This is what happens when you switch out directors in a trilogy

    • @christophergordy1920
      @christophergordy1920 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You realize that Star Wars: A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back was directed by two different people right?

    • @dvc1190
      @dvc1190 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also, Empire Strikes Back ruined the character building in A New Hope. Darth Vader was never supposed to be Luke's father. However, we forgave them for that awkward retcon because it was pretty novel nearly 40 years ago to have a sequel that continued a story from the preceding movie. These days, we trilogies are common so we demand better.

    • @AxcidnKC
      @AxcidnKC 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      RadeTcg I get that not everyone liked it, but plot holes? Did you even see the movie? Please name these so called plot holes.

    • @dvc1190
      @dvc1190 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The main one for me is the slow chase. Imperial ships have always been able to jump into a Rebel fleet at will. There's no reason for Hux not to order some ships to jump ahead whatever is min lightspeed distance and jump back right on top of the rebels. The movie's internal logic never explains it. Another are the falling bombs that defy physics, but that's more of a nitpick. You can't use falling bombs in zero G. The ships were tall for the bombs to gain some momentum using the bomber's internal gravity, but they lose velocity as soon as they hit open space. Those should've been the slowest looking bombs ever after they exited the bombers. Furthermore, as soon as one explodes, the rest will ping pong in all directions as there is no gravity to pull them in one direction. So, the idea of bombers as portrayed is nonsense. Then again, its a nitpick since most of Star Wars tech is pure nonsense. It just stands out more in a mediocre scene.

    • @AxcidnKC
      @AxcidnKC 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      i don't see any of the bombers or physics as plot holes. its Star Wars. if you are going to nit pick that, then there is plenty in every movie you need to nit pick. As far as the slow chase, i'm not entirely sure about this. I have only had the chance to see it once so far but i don't really see it as a plot hole. I think of it as more or less Hux toying with them like a cat playing with a mouse until it dies. No reason to hurry it along, let them suffer, we will get them once the gas runs out.

  • @wroot_lt
    @wroot_lt 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Tom, exactly. My main idea after watching VIII was that i'm probably too old for Disney's take on SW. And i only learned about backlash a few days later, because when i checked the imdb page after the movie, it showed 7.8 (still is high) and i thought "huh". I liked some parts, some parts were weird, some cringe and annoying. I gave it 7. But the main thing is that i don't feel i want to watch new SW movies. And i liked VII very much, i liked Rey hugely and i still liked her in this one. Maybe that's the director change. He is trying to do FUN movies. He made Finn a clown in this one. Actually Rogue One was just ok for me, but now i start to think that their approach is probably better for me (grittier).

    • @cthulwho8197
      @cthulwho8197 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      wroot Rogue One is a good war film set in the Star Wars universe but to me it isn’t a Star Wars Film. Star Wars was meant to be Saturday Morning Serials, black hats and white hats with no shades of grey. Cocky heroes who always do the right thing. Narrow escapes, outlandish action, jokes and wisecracks with maybe the rare heroic sacrifice. It’s the same feel as Indiana Jones.
      It’s not meant to be about people scarred by war, rebels who torture people for the greater good, heroes dying through random senseless acts. The Force Awakens (and The Last Jedi) fits that mood, Rogue One does not.
      If any main character from Rogue One met any main character from Star Wars they would hate them. 😁

    • @wroot_lt
      @wroot_lt 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that was kind of what i took from Rogue One after watching it, a war movie in SW setting. And i liked it less than The Force Awakens. But after watching cheesy scenes in The Last Jedi i started to appreciate it more :) Now it's TFA > RO > TLJ. I'm not going to compare to originals and first episodes, because they all in separate leagues.

    • @cthulwho8197
      @cthulwho8197 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      wroot Yup, that’s how I would rank them as films. The Last Jedi was one third good film (Luke/Rey/Kylo), one third ok film (the rebels plight although any urgency it had was ruined by all the multiple planet hopping) and one third pointless waste of time (Finn). Frankly Finn should have just stayed in his coma for the whole film.

    • @christophergordy1920
      @christophergordy1920 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest, I believe that a lot of the older Star Wars fans feel like you (not all, but many). I think the reason VII was liked so much, is that it stole plot points and story moments from the original trilogy. VII, in my opinion, was a movie that was made for the fans of the original trilogy, trying to bring back their love of the series after the impact of the prequels. As VIII starts to vary from the original trilogy trilogy, many of the older fans tend cringe back.
      That said, I loved VIII, and I am one of these older fans that saw the original in the theater on its opening in 1977. I really liked how they had surprises and story twists, without completely ignoring the Star Wars series. I really did not want to see another movie that was solely fan service to the original trilogy. There were some things that were unnecessary, which is why the movie does not make my top 3 (though it is sitting at 4).

    • @cthulwho8197
      @cthulwho8197 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christopher Gordy I don’t think my age is the reason I dislike it. It’s the fact that the unnecessary parts make up about an hour of the film. 😁
      And the fact they went to the trouble of saving a woefully underused Phasma, only to woefully underuse her again! What was the point? They make so much of Christie in interviews and magazine covers and other marketing. But she’s no more than a cameo.
      The thread of the film I liked, I really really liked. The thread that was ok was ok and contained one of the finest scenes in any film (Light Speed! Although that might have helped in several other films 😁!). The other thread, nah.

    Breath of the Wild is an amazing game! But the biggest surprise for me was that Champion's Ballad DLC. Because, you know, extra paid content sucks, especially when it's pricey (but totally optionnal). However, the reward for completing THAT DLC is the BEST THING that has EVER been in a Zelda game. Granted, it's not really easy and it might take some times to complete it (with a fair amount of frustration along the way). But once you finish...Wow. I know it shouldn't be a big deal and all, but for some reason in this game it's just too fun to miss out. I went out and destroyed about 10 guardians or so in less than 30 minutes without teleporting.

    Three Billboards outside Ebbing Missouri, Coco, War for the Planet of the Apes, Spiderman were probably the movies I enjoyed the most. Thor and Star Wars I was disappointed in. I feel like Thor is trying to turn into a Guardians of the Galaxy type of tone. The second act of Star Wars I felt was really convoluted. Acts 1 and 3 I thought were great but act 2 just really brought the movie down. Mark Hamill was fantastic.

    Kong: Skull Island is my 8th favorite film of all time! For me 1 other notch up for me is the nostalgic feel I get from the old dinosaur films I saw as a kid where the dinosaurs were on islands and people got stranded there.
    Planet of the Apes: I am really enjoying this series of films, and while I liked this last one, it isn't my favorite. A little dark.
    Wonder Woman is my 9th favorite film of all time. and like many others am not enjoying most DC films, but this was superb!
    Strangers Things: I watched the 1st season and was pretty much glued to the show but the 2nd season has been slow and have only watched 2-3 episodes and has been awhile since I watched them. I enjoyed the 1st series, but isn't on any top 10.
    Spider-man Homecoming is my 11th favorite film of all time, and like Sam believe its the best spiderman film ever.
    Legion: was a fantastic series, definitely a long term investment. Unfortunately I forgot to rank it when I watched it, so I cannot compare it to anything. I will have to go back.
    Thor: not sure if I am in the minority here, but I disliked the large doses of comedy. In general I am not a fan of comedy films, but I do like the Guardian of the Galaxy films, and expect the comedy there. This film is on the bottom of all the marvel films I have seen.

    Tom, Zee and Sam...my issue with Last Jedi was the betrayal of Luke's character by Rian Jonson. As established by the film's and as stated by Luke Hamill himself (until he conveniently backpeddled after the fact) Luke wouldn't have done that. He wouldn't have sat back in hiding for 30 years. He was one of the most hopeful and optimistic people you'd meet (a characterization of Luke by film 6). Luke would have died before ever giving up on his nephew and drawn a lightsaber to kill family (as evidenced with the lengths he went to save his father from the Dark side). Yes, he went after Vader in a moment of weakness, but that was from a very specific trigger (threat against his sister being turned to the dark side) and he even after the outburst stopped himself and tossed the lightsaber aside and said, no. As evidenced by the character's growth by the end of episode 6, he would never have tried to murder Ben because he sensed a bit of dark side in family. And as Mark himself pointed out, even if we assume that was possible, he wouldn't have said to hell with the universe for 30 years. Maybe a couple or a few years, but he would have come back and dealt with the New Order threat.

    I don't go to theaters to watch movies. I wait until they are out on video. The only exception is that the company I work for rents out a theater for the SW movies every year. I very much disliked episode 8. Too many plot holes, too little character development (snoke, phasma, etc), and contrived "twists". Super lame. Down there with the prequels. I'm not even that much of a SW fan...they are entertaining, but that's as far as I go. Not a fanboy by any means.
    Kong: Skull Island was probably my favorite movie I saw in 2017. A close second was Wonder Woman. I haven't yet seen Thor, but I expect I'll enjoy it.

    The main problem I have with Last Jedi is how they treated Luke’s character and legacy. Even Mark Hamill had a problem with the direction they took Luke to. I think a lot of his scenes on the island were wasted and turning him into a cranky old man seemed like a regression of the character considering the mature hero he emerged to be by the end of Return of the Jedi. I never would have imagined the real Luke would turn out that way and I didn’t enjoy that interpretation of him. They also got rid of a great potential villain - and we know next to nothing about their origin and most likely never will for the final film. I’m not on my high horse though - when I watched it in the cinema I enjoyed a lot of what I saw, but thinking about Luke and other decisions they made to undo a lot of the foundations of Force Awakens has left me disliking it from a narrative point of view.

    I don't get this hate over Star Wars. I thought it was great! It went in different directions to what has already been done before and I think too many fans are clinging on to fan theories or comparisons to the old trilogy. I was invested throughout minus the side plot at the casino.

      Let's see ... too much cg, flat boring undeveloped characters, recycled stories, bad dialogue, altered canon. I think that red letter media says it best, but I think that the people who created Star Wars had editors and actors who left George Lucas. (Alex Guinness vs Jar Jar Binks)

      I didn't hate Alien Covenant, but I don't know what Zee was talking about. It was full of moronic characters. Let's take off our helmets on this planet we know nothing about. We just had a shootout with alien creatures that could be anywhere on this planet - think I'll go have a shower. I just got sprayed with blood and possibly infectious fluids from an alien bursting out of someone, but I'm going to lock you in the room because YOU might be contaminated. There were plenty of morons in Alien Covenant, Zee.

      Minor spoilers, but the Poe and Finn subplots were absolute garbage. The Rey/Kylo storyline held the story together until right before the salt planet portion of the movie. The movie was hinted at going a completely different direction, and it was, until the last 20 minutes where it went "just kidding, nothing really changes." It is probably the best directed, best acted, has the best jokes and the best cinematography, but the macro storyline is absolute garbage, especially the Finn/Rose and Poe subplots, they were completely useless. It's not the worst Star Wars movie, it's simply middle of the road because of the horrible overarching storyline.

    • @EclecticCamel
      @EclecticCamel 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the problem was that it went against decades of now outdated canon. People were expecting one thing and got another. I enjoyed it, but there are certainly things that don't hold up under scrutiny but I'm capable of being objective enough to know tell the difference between where my expectations weren't met and where there's genuine flaws in the story. Most of the people whining about it can't seem to make the distinction.

    The Last Jedi is a terrible movie. The story made zero sense. The characters actions made zero sense. It is strongly disliked because it was devoid of Star Wars values, ideas, and narrative.
    Think of it this way.
    Imagine we came to the Dice Tower page and there was a 2 hour video where Tom acted like a jerk and refused to play any games because he says he hates them now, Zee won every game because he got a perfect dice roll every time, got every card he needed and everyone played against him, like it was their first game ever....Sam told everyone he refused to play any game made before 2017 and was bringing in 2 new people to do Top Ten lists with because he wanted to improve his personal brand. Tom and Zee were part of the "Old" Dice Tower and his new Dice Tower needed to be new.....because.....new. Now imagine halfway through the game that was being played, everyone just quit and started another one ....no explanation.....just did it.....but never really got past the set up phase of the new game because of everyone just kept telling unfunny jokes about alien nipples and green milk....
    Then the video was over.
    Would some people probably like the spectacle that, that video would be?.....sure.
    How would long time fans who spent years enjoying the Dice Tower for what it was, and what it was about, feel?
    Thats the best why i can explain it.
    It was antithetical to a Star Wars movie as much as Tom spending 2 hours profanely telling us he hates board games..etc, would be to the Dice Tower.

    I would have put DC turning it around in 2017.
    Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad were terrible.
    But this year Wonder Woman and Justice League were great. I felt both were better than the 3 Marvel movies of 2017. And that's something I never would have predicted (because I LOVE the marvel movies).
    From your comments it seems you didn't like Justice League. I thought they did a great job at turning around BvS. The Flash was kind of annoying but everyone else on the team was well done.

    I'm with you guys on The Last Jedi. If you're wondering about the hate, I went through a number of negative user reviews on rottentomatoes.com and there is a lot of whining about SJWs. Apparently many people don't like that the torch isn't being passed to white males. There are also many who didn't like how Luke's arc was handled. I not only liked being surprised, but I also thought it made complete thematic sense. I'm shocked at how many people don't seem to understand what a Jedi Master is, and what motivates them. Finally, many complained about the humor in the movie. That's the only complaint that I do agree with. I thought the humor was sometimes jarringly out of place. Aside from that, I was all in. I didn't even mind the casino planet.

      Like all fine art's, I like to think that every great artist has a bad peice, or every great band has a crappy album at some point.
      Maybe some people beilve that is wrong, and for example the Beatles never made anything bad and that they are the best band in the world. But I guess it depends on how you view beauty.
      Anyway For starwars I think people are just more divided on what that worst album (trilogy?) Is. I am sorry if my comparison to other fine arts was bad. xD,
      I want to love everything about it but I had invested a lot in things that are not cannon anymore.

      What struck me, and not in a bad way just something I noted, was how many females were in the film. After the complaint (and running joke) that in the original Trilogy the universe contained only two females (who weren’t slave girls), in the new films every other rebellion pilot, mechanic, commander and soldier is female. As it should be. 😁

      He he he :) I don't think you know what a Mary Sue is m8. Rey has No development as a character as she is perfect in every way. Luke started of as a little brat with little to no ability except for some piloting skills. Anyway Mary "Rey" Sue is by far not the only crap in the films. But what do I know. I think the Darth Maul fight was the crappiest thing in the totally crappy prequels ;)

    The Last Jedi was the worse Star Wars movie ever made. Why bother with shields, turbo lasers(that now arch???), or even fighter, all war in the SW universe should just be done with chunks of metal with hyperdrives. There is so much that is arbitrary, poorly written, or just plain stupid.
