As I'm watching this video, I'm in the hospital for a few days and brought a little storage box of scissors, glue, colored pencils and scrap paper and a little plain notebook. Keeps my spirits up and from endless scrolling on my phone 😅
Yes, as your body heals, it's so good to keep your mind active. Great thinking on your part to bring those items. I hope you soon feel up to creating again. Feel better soon! 🩷💜💙
I am 70 and fell 3 1/2 years ago. Two spinal fusions later, i am still homebound by the pain. i can sit/stand for about15 minutes. i love gel printing and collage as i can start and stop easily. Great video. Thanks!
I have lots of wonderful art supplies, but for many reasons it has been a while since I felt up to doing anything creative. This video was VERY inspiring, and out of all the mediums I enjoy I feel like paper is one of the easiest and most enjoyable. My brain is already starting to bubble with ideas. It is obvious you put a lot of time and effort into this video, and I really appreciate it! I'm thankful YT recommended this video to me, and I subscribed!
Oh my gosh Margarete, thank you so much for the "Forward" download! That is exactly what I need for my art journals, because those sentiments are truly what I need to tell myself all of the time to get "unstuck"! As far as finding time to collage, when I had kids in elementary and middle school, I used to have to drive them myself and wait in a line-up of cars for about 20 minutes every day to pick them up. I found an inexpensive vintage train case on Etsy (but you could use a tupperware storage bin, and old tool box, whatever easily fits in the car seat) and started adding papers to it as I found them. Anything that caught my eye. Eventually I had a nice selection and just added a little journal (I used the smallest Moleskine with some signatures removed), a gluestick, and an old thick magazine to use as a "worktable" to glue on, and I had a blast creating one page a day. All of the suggestions in your video are so great and so inspiring. Thanks for this wonderful series!
Wonderful!! I'm so glad, Jean, that the message in "Forward" speaks to you. Even doing collage for years, I still need to remind myself of this all the time. And GREAT idea about bringing stuff in the car for pick up! This is me all the time 😉. What's a train case, though? I'm going to search on Etsy and see what comes up. 💙👍🏼💜
@@MargareteMiller Yes Etsy is a great place to discover what a vintage train case is like. Unfortunately, they have been "discovered" in recent years and are getting to be much more expensive online. I do see them from time to time in thrift shops and flea markets though. It's great when you find one with some inside features such as pockets or little extra trays.
Tray Table! Gosh, when I moved to my teeny tiny space (losing my craft room) I despaired at having no room to work in. So I got myself a tray table, and its the best thing I have to get me motivated to create something. Before getting it I was working on the floor which isn't at all ideal, so....yeah thanks for sharing your tips and tricks!
Hi Margarete, I started doing collages with your assignments two years ago. While at times, I found it frustrating to work within the confines of the assignments, I also learned an incredible amount about collaging itself since the topics were given and my concentration centered on how to make an arrangement that was pleasing to my eye (not always successful but, hey, I learned from that too). So thank you for providing them and all of your other valuable videos ❤
I don't collage. But I am very creative with a lot of other crafts, and this was very useful for me to get unstuck from the rut I am in right now. I took literal notes.
This is such a wonderful idea! I have the time but I have so much to do and the mess I make is the biggest reason why I put it off. I have thought of doing crafts in my bedroom, but my main table that I use for everything has more space, is heavy, and my bedroom is really loud for some reason being next to traffic, so I keep it in my apartment living room. I love small spaces and my apartment is more than big enough for just me but I have a cat so I like having the little bit of extra space for her to roam some..but crafting is one of the downsides to it lol! I have a million ideas and little ability to get stuff I need for storage so my place is quite unorganized but not the worst, so I spend a lot of time rearanging things.
ha! Great video actually! Project scope is absolutely essential as I see a simple project on YT and want to do it that night. But I go to my craft room, I see all my supplies and get overwhelmed EXACTLY as you outlined. It takes me time to gather all the goodies needed for that project and time flies! I like way too many videos, so I save all the projects I want to do in diff playlists. However, I have saved so many now I don't know which one I want to do first or when I am short on time. I need to pull stuff and put it in a bin to keep the narrow focus perhaps. But thank you so much for this video!! Thought provoking!
Wonderful! I'm so glad you're thinking about how you can approach a new project. I totally understand how a person can walk into their space and get totally overwhelmed. It's good to have a plan! 😉💙👍🏻
I have a glue book (GB) I've created from bits, boxes and what not and am having a blast creating little collages. I even took a deck of playing cards and created prompts to inspire me to use different elements to combine in the GB. Thanks for the inspiration, I love your calm, friendly, almost therapeutic voice. Take care hun...I love what you're doing on your channel.
Thank you for this video. I made some collages while working from home. It took me more than 5 minutes though. I shut off my camera during webcam meetings and just cut and glued. I like messing with lots of different mediums, and it takes me more than 5 minutes just to figure out where I put things. Your tips will help me a lot to create more frequently.
Margarete: good directions for people who are thinking about collaging. To me, collaging is one of the most inexpensive and easiest way to be creative. I have a magazine that I’ve turned into a glue book. I create pages that appeal to me using what attracts me. As I look back, it’s most interesting to see what I have done. No rhyme or reason, but yet, it clearly reminds me what my interests are. It’s quite telling. And it’s so much fun. Carol from California
Hi Margaret, I love, love doing your weekly challenges! I went to a ring journal I made this year. I never have to worry about it getting too full Last year’s is really a big gator mouth. I tend to add a lot of embellishment s. Thank you as always ❤️
This was the best advice! I feel the assignment idea was something that will definitely help. Thanks , watching all your videos with delight. Thanks hugs
This was very helpful. Thank you! I am going through something in my life right now that is causing me to have difficulty concentrating. Also, right now I cannot bear to make a mess. Yet, I not only want to create, I NEED to create. I am going to get started with your suggestions here right now. Thank you!
I like to make greeting cards using collage. This idea of doing the creative work in 5-minute increments is perfect for my busy life. And greeting cards are often quick projects as well! Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks for sharing. Definitely relate as I have three kids and one is newborn so it’s hard to have long stretches of time… and also need to be able to leave things and not lots of cleanup time 😅
That's how I started this whole collage art journey. Two little ones and needing to escape a bit into my own world for a bit 😉💜👍🏼. I hope it gives you some ideas!!
A very encouraging video, Margarete. I especially love your observation that even thinking about your collage throughout the day can spark creative ideas. We begin to see things in a new way.
Great video. So helpful for a beginner like me. I can’t get started. Lots of excuses: not enough time nor energy, too many ideas, too many materials. You really narrow it done for me. Still have your gluebook. Bought it some time ago. Gonna pick it up again. Thx so much!
I have already noticed a change Margaret! Having all my supplies out on my tray table ready to go I had a few minutes to cut out a cover for my fabric Journal. I feel so accomplished! LOL!
Love your channel - I was always afraid of trying this art form for fear of not getting it right - You give me inspiration to try, and you explain everything very well - Thanks Jeanne❤ - I’m a new subscriber.
Thank you Margarete for the simple ways of doing art. Maybe with your help I can get the desire back to get started again. Looking forward to your next tutorial.
I have one of your prompt list and have only done three so far but you are so right, the ideas for the collage swirl around in my brain throughout my day. I do larger collages but really enjoy having these smaller projects to jump in and out of as I have time. Thank you for putting these lists together. Mary
@@MargareteMiller It really does! And the smaller projects make sure I am always in my creative space daily which I think is very important to help you learn and grow more confidence. I have not been brave enough to show any of my work yet.
Such a wonderful video, Margarete. I have found your weekly collage challenges to be super helpful, as I often find myself overwhelmed. (I'm working on week 15 as I listen to this video!😀) As always, thank you so much for taking time to share. ❤
This was very helpful and I am going to print out the couple of things you suggested. Even though I have lots of things and papers because I do junk journals I think that the list will still be very helpful to me. I'm not doing great in my Margaret Miller collage challenge and that I can't always find a way to make things go together cohesively like you do and so many of your challenges. But I'm getting better and I'm going to keep trying thank you
Hi, Margarete! Where do I find the "Forward" to print out as mentioned in this video? Thank you for your inspirational ideas and for sharing so much to help us all. Love your art and journal style!
Oh, wonderful! I found it. You were very clear before, but, somehow I just could not see it. With your kindness, I went back to the description and "YAY!" there it was. TY for sharing it... I think it will help me a lot to be freer thinking when art journaling!
Such great information in a simple and clear presentation! I’m still working in my 2022 collage book between other projects. It’s great practice and inspires other ideas.
