  • Hailed by critics as the greatest TV series never seen, this never broadcast horror-suspense series is hosted by and stars Boris Karloff!
THE RETURN OF MADAME VERNOY: In this tale of reincarnation, a young Indian woman says she's still in love with the husband she left behind when she died. She startles the now much-older Mr. Vernoy when she appears, announces that she's Madame Vernoy and wants to resume their relationship.

I am astounded that I watched this in the 60's - this is a very special one, but no different from all the others in excellence. I delight in Mr. Karloff, I still love black and white, and a really good tale. This story has values, a sense of right and wrong - AND (I've always loved Paul Harvey and Aesops Fables) we get a 'moral of the story' at the end.
Our American society is just now beginning to understand and protect individual freedoms - I grew up in a time when communism was everywhere, everyone was suspicious of any difference (kids weren't allowed to play with me in 2nd grade because my parents were divorced). It was a time when 'other religions' were all but your own - we didn't even know the difference between Catholic and Protestant theology, what redemption or reincarnation was...most still don't. Here we have a 1950's classic that shows not only religious tolerance, but grace - I bet in 2024, the folks watching this learned more about Hinduism and the belief inreincarnation than they've ever learned.
It is unbelievable to me that when I was two years old, Hal Roach studios put out a show that was not only a true story (times, dates, religious facts - and the woman were real in 1923) not on;ly educated Americans, but honored the Eastern cultures! Thank you for posting these lovely old (but so relevant) videos. My best.

Good episode. Despite lack of authentic Indian cast members, felt they were adequate & passably believable & acceptable. This was the norm for Hollywood productions of that era. I give the series credit for featuring a story set in late 1920's India--a mostly overlooked time & place, in terms of story-material. Clever insertion of actual Indian-locales, taken probably from old movie-filler travelogues or scenes from old movies set in India or the East. The sets used were pretty convincing and sufficient for its purposes, as there really was no need to go to lavish expense on this episode. The story was the thing & is quite compelling. Makes me want to explore Indian history further! The only obvious negative, easily shrugged-off for entertainment purposes, is that none of the principals would've been speaking English, except for the highly-educated friends Karloff & the French father. Conceivably, George Hamilton's character would've known English, as he was headed for an American university, cleverly unnamed. Overall intriguing episode!

I appreciate films that use English subtitles while the characters speak their native language, too. It wasn't common practice during this era. Since I love the shows and films from this era, I just use my imagination.
Even though I'm hearing the dialogue in English, in my mind the characters are always speaking their native language. I've been doing it for so long that I don't even think about it. It's the same as pretending that the actors aren't really white.

The year was 1958. There were lots of Indian actresses who could have portrayed the role. But sadly, theier accent were authentic Indian and the western world wouldn't have had understood a word. Hence the white girl portrayed it. I don't blame the technical incorrectness. India was miles behind on adaptation to the western culture back in 1958. Today you see Indian women speaks English well with both American and English accents. It wasn't back then.
I just find it funny how times was back then in India.

Now I know there's a connection between this series and "One Step Beyond", because I recognize this story. if "The Veil" is from the late 50's and OSB is from the early 60's, then OSB must have copied this show, which is pretty unimaginative. Were they able to do that without getting sued?
Just curious: why do so many people close their minds to beliefs and ideas different from their own and worse, claim they aren't true? What makes them such experts? Personally, I'd love it if past lives could be proven, what a relief to get that "you have only one life so don't mess it up" burden off one's shoulders! I'd prefer the option to see and do it all as many times as I'd like, with the chance to find real happiness and have dreams come true, no matter how long it takes. And no need to get uptight about old age, as you'll be young again soon enough. If you die young this time, you'll live long the next time, if you're disabled now, you'll be in perfect health someday, if you wanted kids but can't have them, next time you'll have a houseful of children...endless possibilities....talk about FREEDOM!
And that's the last you'll hear from me, at least in this lifetime....

They never had to walk a mile to the library and check out books and have really study and search for the answers to any given problems. There was nothing objectionable in this portrayal. In fact they showed them in good light. & Reincarnation belief is prevalent there.

@MsG. Who cares. It was a different time- people didn't hide how they felt about minorities, now u never know how people feel b/c everyone tries 2 be so PC. I'm a minority & I love:
All in The Family- Fat Albert & Little Rascals- today these shows would never be "allowed" 2 b made. Even comedians can't joke about anything- they might hurt someone's "sensitivities" And not 4 nothing, Asians have a hierarchy- alot of judgment & hate amongst each other. Everyone dislikes some race religion etc in sum way. Its just the way of humans & it will Never change.

Loved it !!! Not sure about reincarnation but it's possible she was channeling a spirit bc there was a need to be met. You don't get to relive your prior existence but it's remembering a prior existence which most of us can't do. However, I've always wondered why as humans we can be attracted to something that is totally foreign to our own culture.... and yet feel comfortable within it like an old shoe. Thanks Pizza :o)

By far the worst acting in the series. The woman played her part like Theda Bara's Vamp. Hamilton may be the only famous name in the series, apart, of course, from Boris.

Ms. Vernoy was pretty much first year drama student. Pretty woman but not believable. Boris Karloff is terrific no matter what he does.

Representation matters BIG time. And for you to suggest that certain cultures cannot act is very raciest of you.

This was made in the 1950s, so unless you invent time travel. Sensibilities were very different back then. If they remade The Veil series today things would be very different thankfully.
Sadly it's pretty clear that these days it's education that has really lost it's way as evidenced by your own comment.
