It's because they set custom HP values depending on the character, because some characters "realistically" would have more or less health. They can't do that if they pick random.
Fun fact, the type of needles that sheik uses are not supposed to be deadly but are rather used for damaging in a safe way so that things like captures can be done easier
Idea: Smash, but every move is EXTREMELY accurate to the source material. eg: Mario's fireball's being extremely spammable, every character from an rpg can crit, Toon Link's boomerang stuns you, etc.
So how would it go with Kirby? Lore wise Kirby can hit something so hard it goes light years per second. This would kill anyone and have extreme knock back on any move that involves Kirby hitting someone like kicking or punching. But game wise Kirby never does that because the consequences of that force would literally shatter planets.

So yes, his max potential is off the charts, but based on source material, he's just as likely to bump into you instead.
If it were accurate to the source material, either Mario and Luigi would only be able to have a couple of fireballs on-screen at a time, or they would move much slower, as the fireballs' properties (or at least Luigi's) are also a nod to the fireball enemies from the original Mario Bros. Upside is they'd still get a solid damage buff, seeing as they kill almost everything that isn't Bowser or the Koopalings in a single shot, the Bros themselves included.
This is a fun idea for a mod lol. I’ve also always wondered about a “type effectiveness” mod; like, theoretically, Pikachu should do double damage to Squirtle and Charizard, but less to Ivysaur; and Marth and Lucina’s Swords would have “dragon effectiveness” which would mean they should decimate the likes of Corrin and probably even Ridley. It’d be probably really crazy to program but I’m surprised by how complex this mod is so maybe it is possible after all lol
This was in Brawl with Pokemon Trainer, which is why it was the worst character. The game might get really crazy if you look into the Fire Emblem weapon matchups though (axes like Villager's and Byleth's are less effective on sword users, but spears and I think bows are effective on swords). Then Joker/Arsene resists Dark/Curse attacks (like Ganon and maybe White Pikmin?), and weak to Ice (Ice Climbers, Kacrackle Slash, and PK Freeze) and Bless/Light (Palutena and Zelda).
Honestly Ridley might be the most damaging character with nearly every move. side b and skewer would most likely be instant kills and his moves involving the tail or claws would just deal immense damage. Except D-air, the worst move in his kit would still be trash in this mode, though maybe there would be a small buff to damage

Sephiroth's Neutral B would be absurd being flare and the more powerful versions of it, I think in like one of the SE RPGs out there flare is described to have the power of like a nuke and then mega flare being 100,000x regular flare and Giga Flare being 100x Mega Flare (because of prefix descriptions), you just throw a standard flare and when it explodes normally it instead hits the entire screen. and wouldn't have any kind of explanation on what the other two do xD. Though the power of flare I think does change depending on the game and franchise so who knows
A ninja's shuriken are actually designed to be annoying but spammable so you can distract an enemy and draw your actual intended weapon (or more likely, run away). The kunai you are thinking of aren't used as throwing weapons generally outside of anime and videogames - they're stabby knives and climbing tools, but don't throw very well. Also they're literally just tiny gardening spades with the edges sharpened a bit LOL
Shulk would need to do 1 damage with everything that's not like the first two hits of his jab against human characters, since the Monado can't cut people

Example: Cloud has survived missiles, gunfire, and even a supernova from Sephiroth going off in his face. If he then gets one shot by grenades or even "sun salutation", no longer realistic.
Technically, from what I’ve heard about Supernova (haven’t actually played Final Fantasy), it isn’t an actual Supernova, but an illusion or something along those lines. Hence why its’ most predominant effect is giving the target a random status effect, instead of just obliterating them.

I used to try to make Sm4sh realistic by playing in stamina mode with high gravity (jumping high is unrealistic) and only humanoid characters with lifelike proportions. I'd also give them next to no HP because swords and explosives of course.

And yes a shield very much would block a sword, that's the entire reason things like a mace exist is to bash a shield apart and the arm of the person holding it.

I used to try to make Sm4sh realistic by playing in stamina mode with high gravity (jumping high is unrealistic) and only humanoid characters with lifelike proportions. I'd also give them next to no HP because swords and explosives of course.
