I think you’re correct in your lack of weep hole causing an immense amount of water just sitting under that paving. This moisture will just rise and probably be a big factor. The big tell on that is that there are large areas on that patio that have moved (sank/subsided).
I also think that block paving is just particularly susceptible to moss returning so quick as the sand is just always going to be a live area for organisms to grow

Doesn’t matter what you do,here in Ireland we had such a crap summer and winter that everything is gone green, even new houses have gone green, the other day I sprayed 2 year old roof.No biocide in the world will keep surfaces klean for a year + if the weather is crap.

If biocide does stay on/in a surface then spraying after re-sanding seems a more logical way to go. I think if you can life a tile the manufacturers print the name on the underside. If you drill say a 3mm pilot hole first it makes it easier and more accurate. New van looks a monster :-)

Is it a north facing garden? That could cause a lot of shade and moss loves dark and damp places.

I think you may be right, and if you had biocided the block paving after sanding the biocide would have soaked into the sand and lasted longer but I think the sand on top of the biocide will just cover it up

I'm in Australia so this may not be relevant, House 1, the decking boards on level 2 look very different to the ones "we" are used to here, if those boards are smooth on the underside, the grooves showing on top "we" call reeding to shed the water that runs off the boards like Stalactites in caves. I see more installed with the reeding to the top here as people think doing so will increase grip, but it actually traps moisture on top and actually makes them slippery over time.

In the Netherlands, recent government policies have significantly reduced the use of strong chemicals by government councils in the last few years, resulting in a more thriving nature, especially moss and algae. This surge in growth poses challenges for city councils and residential areas alike, necessitating more extensive and frequent maintenance to prevent the rapid spread and regrowth of algae, weeds, and moss.
As a second-year exterior cleaner, I've noticed that many customers have also mentioned the drastic and quick return of these growths, which was not as prevalent a few years ago.
It seems the policy changes regarding chemical use might be a contributing factor. However, since they can't rely on strong chemicals, it's a constant challenge to keep these growths at bay.

Boiling water is great for weeds and also white vinegar, I believe pws is working on something that isn't a weed killer, but its to treat the blocks etc but you shouldn't get it near any weeds 😉😉

Hi Jake, isn't there a much more expensive sand but for that I'd say way too expensive that has the chemical mixed in if I recall....
Pity it is down to drainage, lack of and pooling, there should be a fall off in all sections there to be honest.

The drive / patio at the start. Nothing can guarantee moss or weeds returning even if it was seald wouldn’t be ever. As said it’s due to environmental factors and possibly poor drainage. Personally I am still whery of bio treating patios due to some of the risks of bio, but am going to start using more of the pure seal products witch I know some do have bio but after doing the course am more confident in the use off there products. I know it’s frustrating especially when standing by work you done but we carnt control all the factors nore predict everything.

as a garden designer and landscaper i just cannot understand why people put block paving everywhere as a Patio in this country. its murder with our wet weather to keep weeds and moss under control. I push people to put Porcelain down now. much easier to look after.

I can see what kind of type they are just from the house they purchased and the questions they asked.
Leave them types where they are.
