    @DW Red, I like your video , easy to follow. are all the Turbos from 98 to 05 basically the same turbo for the 1.8T ? I found an 05 Passat at the junk yard and the Turbo looks way better than mine, my turbo leaks from the front as well. I have an AEB engine and I think this 05 Passat is either ATW or another. My car still runs relatively good but not as awesome as when you could audibly hear the turbo spooling up.

    • @ETA555
      @ETA555 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      6:39 this might be a AEB engine it got a wire to the trottle.
      I have one Audi 1998 with AEB and one Passat 2000 with APU engine. The APU got electronic trottle.

    I've got a problem with my turbo, I'm trying to install it back to the exhaust manifold and it wont line up correctly. I've thought about bolting the exhaust back to it and then taking the mounts off to get more play with it, any suggestions?

    Just bought a 2001 Audi A4 with a turbo with almost 200k miles on it. I have no boost gauge and I'm not sure I'm getting any boost at all, I'm feeling a hiccup in power around 2800 rpm and then it returns to normal acceleration. Could I just have a boost leak or do you think I should replace it or should I not worry about it? I'm not really smelling anything bad and not noticing any leaks and I've only had it for a couple days.

    How did you learn all of this stuff? I would love to know as much as you do about cars. But besides TH-cam videos I don't have much experience. I have a car but like it's my pride and joy that gets me to work 5 days a week. And I feel like I would mess it up just taking the airbox out lol. Hopefully eventually I want to get a super cheap junk car that I can just take apart whenever I want without worrying.

    You talk about making sure you shut the valve off on the front grill. I see a little plastic switch there but I have no idea what it is, what it does, or which way is off or on. Any help on that would be great. This was really helpful by the way.

    • @ding0925
      @ding0925  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      at the 7.00 mark im must be talking about its a drain in the front of the radiator to drain the coolant you get to it by pulling the lower black grill trim around the the fog light on the drivers side and you'll see a plug that takes a flat head screwdriver to loosen th-cam.com/video/UW-qVpb7wBA/w-d-xo.html

      It’s something you mention at like 7:27 of turning off a valve and “shutting off the grill.”. There is a little plastic switch behind the grill that I’ve never known what it is for. Wasn’t sure if it is some kind of shutoff or what.

    Right, I'm better off not taking turbo off entirely. I need to change my actuator and wanted to inspect the valve by the exhaust does it moves freely and does it close and open fully. But i think this is better off doing in a garage.

    Hello.
    I have a VW passat b5 1.8 20v but without turbo (92kw), 17 years and 111,000 kms, the engine always tell me that it is fine.
    Watching the video I see that the engine is the same as mine except for the turbo conico air filter on the left side, the turbo, etc ...
    My question is this: how complex would it be to install the turbo and related parts to convert my 1.8kvv engine from 92kw to 1.8kvv from 110kw? Since the engine it with turbo it mount several models of VW, audi, seat and skoda; So that would have access to much spare parts in scrapping.
    Regards, and thank you very much.

    • @ding0925
      @ding0925  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quite a bit.. the computer is not set for a turbo so you would need all the turbo parts plus you'll need to get a ECM /Computer tuned for the turbo set up. if they sell your type of passat where you live with a turbo option you couls search salvage yards for all the parts. manifold,turbo, oil pan,exhaust down pipe,Computer,

    • @alvarocabello2712
      @alvarocabello2712 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, sorry I forgot to speak about electronics (the new parameters for the ECU...)
      but; for reprogram the ECU, i will need a new ECU or just the computer with the software of 1.8 turbo sets?
      Basically the new parts like: manifold, exhaust downpipe and oil pan, are necessary for the excess pressure caused by the turbo itself, right?

  • @osoman818
    @osoman818 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    @140k do you think mine is done? mine kicks off and on, mostly off, do the turbos have air filters of somesort? thanks in advance :)

    • @cwatson42785
      @cwatson42785 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pale Horse89 No filters and yes your turbo is probably bad. They normally only last for 100k. I know it's late but hope this helps.

      Please share any knowledge the uploader may have not shared in the vid. I am planning a month in advance. Is it necessary to weld or buy the "special" wrench or can you fit a universal joint and shallow socket into the space at 4:00? Did you use a Haynes Manual in conjunction with the vid?

    • @rbjoseph25
      @rbjoseph25 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Greg sees I didn't make any special tools and I didn't have to use a manual. Removing a turbo is pretty much the same on any vehicle equipped with one. Just have to remember, it gets oil in (some get water too), oil return, air in and air out (exhaust). Then you have your internal wastegate that gets vacuum.

    I'm about the remove the turbo from my '01 Passat for extreme lack of power and engine pinging. It happened all of a suddent two days ago. No engine light or codes. What were the symptoms on this car?

    • @ding0925
      @ding0925  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pinging? put a vacum gauge on it to confirm a boot issue first , the car in this vid had a broken waste gate so it had no boost

    • @chadsweigart100
      @chadsweigart100 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you say boot issue you mean a potential vacuum line or pressure line issue? Where is the best place for reading this on this particular vehicle?

    • @ding0925
      @ding0925  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      hook a vacum gauge to a vacum line drive it and see what kind of boos it makes.on a hard acceleration it should make 13-18lbs of boost if not check for a leak before pulling turbo off .

      ***** it will smoke lot of smoke from exhaust cause when turbo fan is broken it will drain to catalytic converter and will burn oil if not thats fine

    • @sblindorff0727
      @sblindorff0727 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My car has been dumping a white smoke from the exhaust if I let the car idle for about 10-15 minutes and when I go to accelerate the car almost pauses before accelerating and then it doesn’t have the power it used to… I have a 2002 VW Passat 1.8t awm engine.. I had VAG code 17964 in my check engine lights.. does this sound like it would be the turbo? I don’t want to blow up my car… how long does it usually take a fairly inexperienced part time fixer of their own car to do a job like that?

  • @icisco

    Here are the 3 gaskets and numbers I needed for my 99 Audi A4. Found these parts at fcpeuro.com.
    Audi Volkswagen Turbocharger Gasket - CRP 06A253039E
    Turbocharger Oil Line Gasket Upper - Elring 058145757C
    Audi VW Turbo Exhaust Gasket - Eberspaecher 8D0253115

      Thanks so much for your video, really helped me. Just finished putting a new turbo on the car, runs great. No more smoking, missing and lots more power.
      NOTES from my 99 Audi A4 Quattro 1.8T AEB:
      I didn't have to take the AC compressor off. To get around the oil return line issue, I disconnected it at the oil pan, was easier. I disconnected the coolant hose (banjo line) FROM THE ENGINE (hose clamp) after loosening the turbo housing for more space, easier to finagle that stuff at the bench. I easily got the exhaust bolts off with a socket, I "luckily" didn't need to make the special box wrench tool you made because my car is built different. Your video made the job a lot easier..... thought I'd add my 2 cents. Thanks DW!
