  • The Atari ST Power Pack was bundled with Atari STFM Machines from 1989 onwards in Europe. Somewhat of a masterstroke by Atari UK, this pack began to shift the 16 bit home computers by the bucket load. For good reason too, because this pack contained some incredible titles, many still running on the hype of the arcade;
After Burner, R-Type, Gauntlet II, Super Hang On, Space Harrier, Starglider, Overlander, Super Huey, Eliminator, Nebulus, Pac Mania, Predator, Bombuzal, Bomb Jack, Xenon, Double Dragon, Black Lamp, Outrun, Star Ray, Star Goose.
This video explores the history of the Power Pack and the game bundles which came before it. It explores how the Power Pack changed the fate of the ST and of course we explore every game in the Atari ST Power Pack.

1989 was the year the STE was released, if Atari were still making the STFM or if they just had a lot of STFM in stock they appear to have released this pack aiming at the gaming market while targeting the STE at adults doing desktop publishing and music sequencing. Both the STE and the STFM were quite capable of doing games, work and music.
The messiah of the home computing world was promised to come in the form of the Atari Falcon a 32 bit machine that could compete with the 486 PC (which you had to install a CD ROM yourself if you wanted one).
Imagine an alternative future in which you use PCs at work and come home to a quad core Atari with loads of RAM and internet connection that is actually better and more versatile than the terminal like computer you were using at work.

GREAT video. This was a really insightful nostalgia trip; I had no idea about the Power Pack, and its being bundled with new systems perfectly explains why my mate and I - like you - played so much Gauntlet II, Double Dragon and Super Hang-On on his Atari ST. Some great historical exploration here that has really illuminated parts of my childhood. And thanks for the lovely wistful synth tunes ❤️

I seem to recall that the main reason for the ST game market drying up wasn't the existence of the Power ack, but was instead due to the rampant piracy that existed for the ST, relative to Amiga and PC.

Back in 1992, one of my sisters old boyfriends of the 80's sent me his old Atari Mega ST which cost me nothing. It had a Hi Res monochrome monitor and hard drive. Great for CAD and not too bad for music programs and office apps...then I got an Amiga 500 and later a A1200, the latter of which I still use today.

I remember seeing the advert for the st power pack bundle. I couldn't believe all the arcade games that were included. I managed to convince my dad to buy it for me for my impending birthday. What a fantastic story! I had a similar incident happen to me in the late 1980's with Nes games (10). What truly amazes me...I was in my 8-bit glory thinking the Nes and Master System were the cream of the crop....then I see Hard Driving on your sweet ST. Wow, that was flat out drop dead gorgeous for 1987! I had no idea the micros were doing that even before we had the 16-bit machines! That made the Genesis version look pedestrian by comparison and you got it free with your computer! We had to wait until the Genesis released to get a substandard version of Hard Driving for the home. Great story on an excellent channel. When this damn COVID 19 business is done and I'm finally back to work I am going to support your Patreon. ;)

Great review and I'm glad you out yourself as an Atari ST fan.
Never had the pack but quite a few of its games as copies...I remember Starglider as the first ST game I ever saw. And it worked on the SM124 too, not sure about the Powerpack version though.
Xenon, Pacmania, Star Goose and Nebulus are all on my favourite list, and I play them from time to time.
All4 played through to the end while thinking about it, Nebulus is possible without loosing a single life with concentration.

Hey NN, just a little nitpick from the beginning of the video. You said that the emphasis of Atari in Europe was more on gaming than in the US. That's only partially true unless you count Germany as not part of Europe. In Germany the ST was not only not marketted for gaming but as professionnal tool, it also managed to actually succeed in that. Very few people there bought ST with the color monitor but quasi exclusively with the outstanding SM124 monochrome monitor. That's why mostly all serious programs came out of German (Signum, Calamus, ST Pascal, Tempus Editor, Tempus Word, Turbo (then Pure) C, GFA Basic, Omikron Basic, to name only I few).

Great video. Please do more ST videos.
I always regretted selling my STe when I moved to PC, as I had so many great memories playing games and doing g my GCSE's on it.
I was luck enough to get at a great price CIB the exact model I had back then. It was the Action Pack extra, bright pink and very 80s.
Back in the day mi e was the 520 upgraded to 1MB, I always wish it had the 1040 badge though. Now I have mine upgraded to 4MB and want the related badge but not at £20 of eBay.
The ST has a few games that can use the Roland midi, and some games that use it sound amazing, if I had this back them it would have blown my mind. Worth a video if you have a MT32 or as SC to connect up.
Keep up the good work, especially on Atari ST's.

Plenty of people with Cubase went on to become huge pop star acts, or producers, in the late 80s / early 90s. Though it probably helped to have a MIDI expander and maybe a decent keyboard too. Mind, if you could afford Cubase you probably could. If you could.. "afford"... Cubase that is.

The ST was a fairly popular line of computers here in Canada when I was a kid. It actually sold more units in Canada than the hard to find Amiga line of computers. Which was odd, because the C64 was so easy to find in Canada and it was a popular 8-bit home computer here as well.
But during the mid 1980's, Commodore were pretty clueless about distribution outside of the EU and UK and Atari had Jack Tramiel, who was better at keeping department stores stocked in Canada with Atari ST's and software for the machines.
I never knew anyone with an Amiga back in those days, but I knew many people with Atari ST's.

What a pack! Never seen it but damn, even if there are a few stinkers here, there are also many frigging good games such as Gauntlet II, Xenon, R-Type or Star Ray (unlike you I had a blast with Star Ray back then).
Also I have the same joystick as you but I didn't like it much compared to the others ones that I also have such as the almighty Speedking (so good! But a bit fragile) or the Navigator (both by Konix).
Still the best compilation of games that I can think of for the ST (and the 2nd one I ever owned) is "Les Gen D'Or de Génération 4" which includes IK+, R-Type, Bio Challenge and Voyager. Sure it's less games in comparison but each of them is a winner and they're completely different in genre to each other (respectively: fighting, shoot 'em up, side-scrolling action and 3D exploration) making the whole compilation a fantastic package wich still impresses me! ^^

Ah the Power Pack how I loved it. I remember the day we bought the STE and the Power Pack that came with it; trying game by game and being overwhelmed over and over. My favourite game, at least now, is probably Black Lamp.
Also: I think Predator had some sort of bug where it wouldn't end properly. I recall fighting the Predator, and he'd always just run off and never come back, followed by several empty levels of just running without any further encounters.
Also, pt.II: so THAT's why R-Type would only load for me sometimes!

Pushing Up Roses took a look back at Stargoose Warrior for DOS (which was a port of Stargoose)...wow was the DOS version cut down from the ST and Amiga versions!

There's something about the Power Pack that will always mean nostalgia for me. It's as though most other ST games can't live up to the titles here, even the better ones; and there are some stinkers in the pack for sure. There were all these tiny differences with releases too. My Star Ray doesn't have that sampled intro-screen tune for example.

Ah man I'm going to have to get the ST out now!

I think you should do a live episode, and have one of those game phone ins - like Going Live. Bombuzal would work perfectly.

I to had a ST in the day playing xenon was amazing. I used to have slideshow images of some films ghostbusters and raiders of the lost ark even had some NASA space images. Probably look terrible today but back then they where the bees knees but sold the lot to go towards my first car. Tried to look on the tinternet but never did find those images again and can't think how I got hold of them I know neochrome was on the same disks

Very kind for saying so! I think a lot of channels go for attention grabbing topics, whereas I just make videos on what grabs me at the time.... I gusess sometimes apparently they're a little niche!

That's part of the reason I love your channel so much, you can tell you're interested in the subject and not just doing the lowest common denominator for views.

Views will increase exponentially once (people actually too young to have been) hipsters latch onto ZX Spectrums, or Amigas and STs if they want to be honest about their socio-economic class :)

I see what you did there. Both platforms were “Doomed”.
As for After Burner, I think they could have done better with the hardware, if you compare to what the other programmers were able to do with Space Harrier and Super Hangon.

Ooh! Starglider, I have that on my dad’s old ZX Spectrum, and it’s really similar to your Atari ST version, but the frame rate is way lower.

I bought Atari ST with this Power pack so this is funny to see!
    Double Dragon was nice.
The Atari ST sound wasn't so impressive. Lol. 🙂 I got from 520 to 1040 STE and later Amiga 1200. But I hold on to Atari buying this Atari Jaguar game console. Loved playing Doom and Katsumi Ninja! (Liked it better than Quake and Mortal Combat :-) ).
Nice to see that you remembered Language disk, organiser, Music Maker! 🙂

Black Lamp was amazing. I remember the intro being Green Sleeves.
There was an Atari ST game that was a side scroller that involved getting flying chairs and getting out before their fuel ran out.. Any ideas?

I choose Amiga 500, but the main reason for that was that here in italy almost every newstand or electronic shop used to sell cracked amiga games----
