160 km/h on a bike on sand is a bit dodgy, I don't even really want to do that on tarmac wit my 701 Enduro! The South African teams are making us boere proud!
I had to gear my old KTM down to 160 in an effort to keep my licence. So I guess it's whatever floats your boat :D I don't have heaps of sand experience, but I think it's easier to stack at lower speeds. Much like a dirtbike crossing water if it's going fast enough, at a certain speed you will experience similar results on soft sand. I'm not saying I'd want to. But younger me would have for sure.
It's a race still, limiting to 80 would make no sense for the entire thing. There's some risk still in any form of motorbike racing, this is where Dakar limits theirs. I'm sure there was thought put into the 160, they didn't just choose that random number, it's probably the highest speed where their simulations deemed it safe enough for much less risk of fatality. Not to mention its kph, not mph.
comentator is turning crazier by the day

Love this series, I'm new to the sport.
Anyone should envy newer Dakar fans, especially catching up with the 40+ year Dakar history - just amazing stuff.
Easy, easy; not so cheesy! 👍
Brilliant photography.
Brilliant riding/driving.

This year there's no Original by Motul (the amateurs part)?
Do the Minis have rear wheel drive only? I thought that they didn't start in the buggy class this year ...
The Minis compete in T1.2, which is for two wheel drive cars.

160 for safety? If you want to drive safely through the desert, a max of 80 is too speedy

I'd like to see them bring the big bikes back even speed limited that is the big sales market for manufacturers..,
