11:09 ive been to Yogyakarta before for holiday on July 2018. One of our tour trip is to Merapi volcano. One of many houses in that area was destroyed by the eruption; and they changed that house into museum. They restored anything that they could to build a museum, and to share with tourist what was happened during the 2010 eruption. Yogyakarta is one of the top favorite place to visit among Malaysians. Sending ♥ from Sarawak, Malaysia.

    Why are volcanoes called active?
The word “active” is used to describe a volcano that is able to erupt even if it isn't erupting right now.
There is no consensus among volcanologists on how to define an "active" volcano. The lifespan of a volcano can vary from months to several million years, making such a distinction sometimes meaningless when compared to the lifespans of humans or even civilizations.
For example, many of Earth's volcanoes have erupted dozens of times in the past few thousand years but are not currently showing signs of eruption. Given the long lifespan of such volcanoes, they are very active. By human lifespans, however, they are not.
Scientists usually consider a volcano to be erupting or likely to erupt if it is currently erupting, or showing signs of unrest such as unusual earthquake activity or significant new gas emissions. Most scientists consider a volcano active if it has erupted in the last 10,000 years (Holocene times)-the Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program uses this definition of active. As of March 2021, the Program recognizes 1,413 active volcanoes that have had eruptions during the Holocene Epoch. Most volcanoes are situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire. An estimated 500 million people live near active volcanoes.

Hi. I live in a small city lies between mount bromo and semeru (and some others mountain/volcanoes around it). The dutch built my city but before it was a hindu-buddhist kingdom area: singhasari /majapahit.
Yup it is fertile thanks to the volcanic eruption, and yes, every year it ALWAYS happened. The earthquake though MOSTLY happened bc TECTONIC plates movement from the south sea. 4-5-6 richter scale is common. We don't even has japanese standard construction on buildings😅 Casualties happens on land, building but rarely to human lives. People knows what to do to minimize it. And we used to it. Even sleep through the earthquakes.
Abt the mining, i have to tell u this : java island is rich on minerals, but you can't just stuck some oil rig or build mines. U can't build Underground (mountain) tunnel or bridge just bc it needs to be build here. Math or physics calculation said it possible, but in reality nope. U just can't. There is a dark side, unexplainable by western logic in this.
I give u examples : there is a should be mining site in the north-east jave region. But the site was protected by temples (hindu). When a mining company (this was owned by prowerful individual, he can buy the local goverment) they insist do the exploration and... There was sink holes then methane gases, then Sand blast, huge flood happened, so much casualties on land-many villages drowned. 2 presidency just to solved the civil compensation. The temples was built to remind us : dont do stupid things to the land.
Merapi mountain has the "mountain keeper" . This powerful individual is someone that able to postpone the eruption. Im not joking here. This person litterally save lives.
At dutch colonial era : building bridge, railway tunnels need sacrifice. Real human lives in order to get the permission to built such from the other dimension. I got the stories from my grandfather--he was work as head civil engineer (the dutch even send him on scholarship to sidney). So, why mining in kawah ijen is still done in manual? Well...

The eruption of Krakatau is still not compared to the eruption of Mount Toba 74,000 years ago. This volcanic eruption changed the world's atmosphere and killed many humans in the past, and also made the largest lake in the world, Lake Toba. This mountain is still active and waiting for the time to erupt, I heard that the eruption of this mountain will bring the apocalypse. I hope this mountain doesn't erupt forever, amin

As far as I remember, when I was in kindergarten or elementary school, whenever our teacher asked us to draw a landscape, there were always two mounts in the background, one of which had a thick fume column on top. It is because we live only 20 miles from Mount Merapi, so an active volcano with a fume column is a common thing to see.

    WRT man vs machinery.
    1. With machinery it does increase efficiency but it also means less man power needed and that can only mean taking someone’s livelihood. Yes $20 a day may not be much to you and me but it means a lot to these guys. My only gripe is safety and health issues with the long exposure to these fumes and smoke.

There are 40 volcanoes. and there are even 2 volcanoes just 30 km from the capital city of Jakarta . and actually Indonesians are more afraid of earthquakes and tsunamis. from a volcano. because every day there are 3-4 small earthquakes measuring 3-5 in Indonesia in Indonesia

On 22 December 2018, a modest amplitude but devastating tsunami struck Indonesia’s Sunda Strait from around 14:27 to 15:00 UTC (21:27 to 22:00 local time), leaving at least 437 dead and tens of thousands injured. The tsunami swept onto the coastlines of southeastern Sumatra and western Java without warning from either earthquake ground shaking or any alert system. The source of the tsunami was along the southwest coast of Anak Krakatau, an active volcano on the rim of the caldera of the great 1883 Krakatau eruption.
