I passed my CCNA a few months ago. I moved out of a dead-end IT job at a bank to now working at an ISP as a system engineer. Some of the skills I acquired directly apply to my work. There's also a ton I've learned at my new job that would have been extremely difficult to pickup without the fundamental skills/knowledge I got during my CCNA studies.
(Jeremy is one of the reasons I passed my CCNA)

I got my CCNA a decade ago...applied to dozens of positions. Not one call back.
Mind you, I already had experience. I worked in a data center (for the data center) as a network tech. Meanwhile, I would run across guys who barely had any experience who were calling themselves network engineers .
    I was infuriated.

I have little to no energy left to study because I am learning a different way. For me it was perfect because i want to do CCNP Enterprise next. And the CBT movies are not out yet. Some of the things i have done. : - install monitoring solution on 4500 switch -create a TAC case for high cpu spikes on this same 4500 switch -changed a port to a routed port and give it an ip -created a lab for new hires to test them -install a Cisco room kit -do a WiFi survey. It has been crazy. :-)

I have a lot of real experience in what I do in Industrial Systems Process Control Automation but less formal training, so it’s backwards for me traditionally. My plan after I accomplish getting my CCNA has been to increase my knowledge of Industrial Automations as I do not work in Enterprise IT so to speak but in Industrial Process Automations Controls. Cisco and Rockwell Automations has a unique partnership as it relates to Industrial Networking Architecture design and implementation. This Cisco has an Industrial CCNA which in the updated Certs is being removed no idea why. That knowledge base is very important to what I do and will pursue that for some time to build on my CCNA. Wireless CCNA will likely be down the road as for future CCNA.

Jeremy, this video shows you have great character. "Certification junkies" would be the ideal customer for a businesses like CBTNuggets and Veeya. Ciaco just opened up online testing, What do I study next? Collaboration is the new buzzword, we need security to collaborate, and enterprise routing to provide the security, oh and NetworkChuck $#!+ in my ccna cli sundae with API, Python, DNA SDN so it seems like maybe start at the beginning of the DevOps track is the most forward looking option. Jeremy, I passed my CCNA earlier this year with a lot more experience than I needed, I had already spent 4 years as a network technician and a year as a network engineer. I was held back a lot by monetary constraints and the fear of failing (after everyone I know who had CCNA told me I would fail 4-5 times before passing...) I am currently employed as a Network Engineer and feel as if I have worked way past most CCNA topics. Should I move forward to CCNP? Are there any other certifications you would recommend?

  • @benthomas6828

1:33 ya...just jump into a career. I’m gonna let everyone know right now that doesn’t know, you don’t just get a certification and get a job. I have CCNA as well as FIVE CompTIA certs, and an associates degree in computer science. My resume was done in a professional environment thanks to my military background and for every 50 jobs or so that I apply to, I get 1 call back. I shake my head when I hear people talk like getting into the IT industry is just as simple as applying for a help desk job with some customer service background.

    Hi Jeremy,
I totally agree with this. Nowadays you will hear people take this AWS cert, or this cert just because. In the company where I work for, we don’t use AWS. However we use Cisco, some HP, Palo Alto and F5. So I focus on learning these technologies instead to be successful in my current position and help the organization that’s paying me.

Hi! I passed my CCNA in October and moved to Denver at the beginning of January.. Maybe I followed this advice subconsciously, but this is exactly what I did. The CCNA probably was like "hey this guy actually knows SOMETHING" and I got in the door as a computer technician (I could've done this exact job as a senior in high school, but oh well, it's in the industry kind of and pays well). However, I want to continue studying. I have seen that getting the CCNP is basically a piece of cake after the CCNA and I'm wondering if I should get the CCNP before studying cyber security (what I'm actually interested in)

I'm stuck in a position where I'm making a decent salary but there is no future or growth, I personally was interested in obtaining my CCNA just to go in a different direction into something that would potentially have more growth BUT my current job has little to do with networking. So if/when I attain the CCNA, I would be starting from scratch and possibly be taking a hit on my salary. Curious if you (or anyone) would recommend this path and is it typical to be hired with ONLY a CCNA? I have general IT experience, but never worked an IT job before. I don't have a college degree in Computer Science.
