  • Slicker brushes are an important piece of dog grooming equipment for both professional groomers and home groomers. Slicker brushes help remove knots and tangles in your dogs coat. Choosing the correct slicker brush for your dogs coat type is important to help maintain healthy skin and coat.

    Hi Melanie, thanks so much for this video. I have learnt so much from it. Have never used a slicker but think it would be a great detangling tool for my westies as they get easily matted. I have a six month old and three year old and both they and I are new to this. Which slicker do you recommend? Also which spray would you suggest? Does it help with detangling also? Thanks again for all your info. Mindy

      I would use the universal slicker, if you golden has a thick coat, I recommend the long pin universal slicker. Please let me know how you find it 💗

    Hi I own a cavoodle he is on the small size around six kilos I own a slicker very similar to the artero one with the wooden handle on your site is that good enough or do you recommend another one as I am going to order the small Matt breaker and face comb and conditioner

    • @MelanieNewmanSalonEssentials
      @MelanieNewmanSalonEssentials  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your question, if the pins on your slicker are still in tact meaning are they bent? If they are not bent, you slicker should be ok to still use. If not I would recommend the artero Flexi slicker. It’s a double sided gentle slicker with a firm and a medium side.💕

    i haven't been brushing my dog the right way, thanks for the video! currently i use the artero double sided brush, but i'm not sure if it does can remove dead undercoat. any suggestions?

    • @MelanieNewmanSalonEssentials
      @MelanieNewmanSalonEssentials  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You definitely have the correct brush, you may need to brush small sections at a time, then once the slicker goes through smoothly then use your metal comb, to comb though your dogs coat. If you hit a knot, then repeat the process and use your slicker again💕then followed by your comb and then once your comb is combing through the coat and you feel the knots and tangles have been removed then moved onto the next section. 🌸 let me know how you go🌼

    Hi Melanie. I have a 20 weeks old Maltese Shihtzu puppy and a Magic sheer slicker brush. I was told not to use slicker brushes because the pins can cause the hair to split. Is this true? Thank you:)

      @@MelanieNewmanSalonEssentials Hi Melanie, the groomer cut my now 11 months old puppy' fur to rather short. It has grown since. I have been brushing her fur everyday. First with a soft brush, then very gentle run through with a slicker brush, followed by metal comb. Of course, I never fail to spray her with the puppy spray on conditioner first! A great relieve that her fur is not knotted and manageable now 🤞. However, her tear stain is still an issue 😊. Thank you.

    I bought the Artero protected tooth brush for our bichon/poodle mix when he was a puppy based on your video.. It worked like a charm on his soft puppy hair and it was a good choice.
    But now that he's getting to be almost 9 months old, his coat is getting a little longer/heavier/curlier and that brush doesn't seem to do the job as well.
    Which brush would you recommend for the next stage?
    Thank you!

      Thank you that is great to hear. I would recommend the Flexi slicker its a very gentle slicker-melanienewman.com.au/collections/grooming-products/products/artero-flexi-slicker?variant=31529160835141
      or if you think you need a slicker that is firm and will remove knots faster, I recommend this one-

    Could you tell me which is the richer conditioner? Relax or Purify? Thank you.

    • @MelanieNewmanSalonEssentials
      @MelanieNewmanSalonEssentials  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The relax is richer and the purify will still hydrate and draw toxins and pollution for skin and coat💕

      @@MelanieNewmanSalonEssentials Thank you that helps. I would like something richer than both of these for my Standard's ears and crest. Would that be Puppy or Refresh please?

    • @MelanieNewmanSalonEssentials
      @MelanieNewmanSalonEssentials  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The refresh is formulated for double coated breed, gently cleaning while the avocado oil helps hydrate the coat, it’s a heavy conditioner. The puppy in a lot lighter formulated for puppy’s skin and coat to help with the coat transition from puppy to their adult coat.💕

    • @1901yvonne
      @1901yvonne 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MelanieNewmanSalonEssentials Thank you - So the hierarchy of richest to lightest across the range is Refresh, Puppy, Everyday, Relax then Purify? Is that right? I just bought Puppy and Everyday today. :)

    • @MelanieNewmanSalonEssentials
      @MelanieNewmanSalonEssentials  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, no, a slicker brush will not cause the hair to split. I use slicker brushes on all my dogs. When I am trying to grow coat , for example on my adult poodles top knot, I will use a pin brush only in the top knot as sometimes when the coat is really long a slicker can break coat. But as your puppy is transitioning from puppy coat to adult coat I would definitely use a slicker. This will help remove the dead unwanted puppy coat and allow the new healthy adult coat grow.💕

    Which one of these should I use for my long haired pomsky he just has big chunks of hair falling out from his undercoat and I have been trying to find a more comfortable and correct brush for him.

    • @MelanieNewmanSalonEssentials
      @MelanieNewmanSalonEssentials  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for your question. An Artero universal long pin, if you dogs coat is longer. When using the slicker make sure you get to the base of the skin, and brush small amounts at a time, ensuring you are removing all the dead coat💕

    Why are the first two double sided? Are the sides different? and what's the benefit of it being flexible?

    • @MelanieNewmanSalonEssentials
      @MelanieNewmanSalonEssentials  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One side is firmer and the other side is a little softer. The purpose of the Flexi slicker is, it’s a little more gentle on the dogs coat and skin.

    Which slicker would you use for a Lagotto ? I don't have a long coat on my boy, and use a rotating teeth comb, but haven't used slickers. Thanks 😊

    • @MelanieNewmanSalonEssentials
      @MelanieNewmanSalonEssentials  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would begin with the shear magic or Artero Flexi slicker and brush your dog while his coat is still short. By doing this it will help your boy feel comfortable with brushing and it will remove dead skin cells and dead coat. Once your boys coat is longer and I would move on to a slicker with longer and stronger pins such as the Artero universal long pins slicker. I think the challenge for you will be getting him comfortable with being brushed, he may not like it to begin with , but if you start by brushing small areas to begin with and reward the good behaviour💕

Tons more work and grooming which I'm learning. Give names of your conditioning sprays. I'm using Tropiclean detangling.. Chris Christiansen Just Devine.. John Paul for oatmeal conditioning spray.
