Having such an emotionally involved Indian dad is a blessing Deeps!. Father's were taught to be the provider and not show affection, emotion or really speak about their feelings. You're lucky that you have him and your mom!

My dad is a physician too but stayed back in India while many of his friends moved to the US. Honest truth is many of his doctor friends who moved to the US in late 70s and 80s are extremely wealthy and well settled in the US. That was the deal for people who moved to the US in those days. I am adopted and not sure if the place I was from adoption area and the hospital is still around to find my mom if she is still alive. I spoke to a Gujarati person telling me my birthday is possibly wrong so that hurt to find out and make it difficult to search. If you and your family know any info how I can find my family would sooooo appreciate it! My husband is pushing me but I'm just a lost cause and feel hopeless and so many doubts if she is my mom or not etc.

Deepica, first let me say how nice it is that you have this channel and that you feature your parents - it is great to see successful women who look like me and have shared some of the same life experiences. I still remember the first time I got highlights - it was after I saw a photo of your balayage on Birchbox and I took the picture around to different stylists to show them what I wanted - until then I thought highlights were something only white girls could do! That said - if you are going to talk about caste in your video, I want to encourage you to discuss it with some more depth and doing justice not just to the complexity, but also the way it affects people’s lives in a very real way today. It’s great to hear your parents expressing that caste really should not be a barrier to marriage or anything else - my parents often say the same thing - but I’ve often thought statements like “caste shouldn’t matter” or “ we don’t think about caste” are akin to saying in America “I don’t see race” or “ race doesn’t matter” - caste and casteist behavior continues to be a very real force both in India and the US - a large percentage of the refugees at the border are south Asian - many are fleeing caste violence... Savarna (or “upper caste”) people continue to perpetrate atrocities almost every day in India and the diaspora. I bring it up because while my parents worked hard to raise us without discussions of caste - I was dismayed to learn after leaving home that it is indeed alive in America. This website has a great series of articles talking about the realities of caste in America. www.pri.org/categories/caste-america - I will attest that I was shocked to see stories like this happen in real life - in college, I remember meeting a girl who came to our first south Asian club meeting. It was a small school - only 50 south Asian students total - when she didn’t come back, I asked my friends what happened to her. One of them casually told me that her roommate, aTelugu Brahmin girl who had grown up here, usually very polite, friendly and nice (to me at least) had harassed and bullied this girl daily because she was from a lower caste - until she had a mental breakdown and transferred. The tone of the story as told to me was “good riddance”. I was so shocked I didn’t know what to say and could hardly believe someone could be so senselessly cruel - but I’ve learned that this is actually not that unusual - we just don’t hear about it. I think it’s important that first generation Americans like you and me encourage open conversations about this - I know your channel is meant to be fun and enjoyable and not for heavy topics - but I would love to see you use your platform to at least acknowledge and raise awareness of these realities, especially if you are going to talk about caste - Ive never been able to find that girl to tell her how sorry I am that happened - and that we didn’t get her justice then - but I have made a promise to myself to bring these difficult conversations forward, whenever caste is mentioned. I hope you can join me.
