Great tips. I don't like Jiffy seed starting mix either for the reason you've mentioned. It's hydrophobic and dries out easily.

Yes I don't like them at all, the Sunshine/ProMix is so much better. Or just make your own!

Use boiling hot water most starter mix is hydrophobic. Also helps to kill fungus gnats.
