  • Ajloun Castle is a quintessential example of Islamic military architecture. It was built in the 12th century, the castle occupies a strategic position atop a high point in the northern Jordan Valley, intended to defend against Crusader attacks. Over the centuries, it suffered damage from Mongol invasions and two significant earthquakes in the 13th century, but was rebuilt in its current form during the Ottoman period.
The castle was constructed using stones sourced from the surrounding mountains. One notable defensive feature above the entrance is an oil ratchet, used by soldiers to pour boiling oils and burning liquids onto attackers.
The castle's design includes arrow slits that are wide on the inside and narrow on the outside, allowing multiple fighters to station themselves without obstructing movement in the corridors. These slits also have angled deviations, providing the best possible range of view for archers.
From its hilltop location, Ajloun Castle offers expansive views of the Jordan Valley, providing insight into the lives of ancient soldiers who once defended its walls.
Wishing you a safe and enjoyable journey!
