You weren’t around when 96fm began and when it grew through the 80’s. It had adult presenters who promoted the music more than themselves. It was so innovative with things like album oriented content, commercial free hours, massive competitions, the Skyshow and so much more. Back then, everybody listened to 96.
Good video. I was part of the 96fm Fairfax and ARN change over and it was awful. Moral was horrendous. Many good people from that 2012 era were let go. The essence of 96fm was destroyed. Sadly the station sounds weak, lack of creativity and lack of zing.
Perth radio is hugely over saturated in a shrinking market (don’t forget DAB radio now as well). I think you’re being generous to 96fm, it was (from memory) very commercial and didn’t take many risks, but at least it gave a lot of opportunity to local announcers.
Personally i dont think radio or tv will fully die i dont think there will be a day where you will turn the tv and radio is nothing but white noise and static but it will never be as big as it once was but thats just me
Thanks Thanks for this, I would never have guessed. As someone who grew up with 96FM but stopped listening when I moved to the Js in the late 90s, it is hard to imagine 96 being at all listenable.

I went to the opening night down on the esplanade. They put on a laser light show .1980

thanks for commenting. Were you one of the ones let go?
Yep I was. We had the station at number 2 at the takeover. 2016 it was down to number 5. Many of us got the ambush sacking
