Great review, I already have the Mdr-1a and love the comfort of them even though the bass is a little overpowering. I am going to get these as well and I’m coming from the usa
Definitely the best headphones I've used, arguably the best ever produced. BOUGHT it 2 days ago. Just couldn't wait any longer - exactly like what Calvin said "drop everything right now, get your credit card, go & buy this". And now totally immersed in it...
Thanks for the review. I purchased a NW-A55 and instantly wanted some Hi-Res headphones. I just ordered a pair and they should be here in a couple days. I'm from the U.S.A
I have had pretty good luck with Sony products since the 80's and have been looking to purchase some decent headphones with great bass etc. There are an insane number available now in every price bracket but these have caught my eye. Thanks for the info. I think I am going to buy these.
Have you tried the ATH-MSR7b? This is the top competitor on the market right now (portable with 4.4 mm balanced option). The build quality and comfort is better on the Sony's, but many people praise the audio performance of the Audio-Technica's. There is currently no video comparing these two (everyone is focused on Bluetooth ANC). Thanks for your time and effort 👍🏽
Can now confirm that these headphones are INCREDIBLE. STUPID comfortable, SUPER light. SOUNDS AMAZING. Feels like there's nothing on my head. I am in awe. So happy right now.
I just purchased them today and I really enjoyed it a lot. It's loud, crisp, very good sounding that lean towards neutral sound, the base is pronounced really well which is engaging and inoffensive. They have way a lot of details in the highs, volume is louder than any headphones i used previously like the big brands such as Bose 700, Airpods Max, Sony XM4. The downside is that their earpads can build up heat overtime. I'm not even complaining they don't have noise cancelling, ambient sound or being wired. They are kinda like the Sennheiser's type of signature IMO. The best part I got them at a 30% discount, I still wouldn't buy them at their full price tho. They are just great for PC and phones with a headphone jack, plus they are 32ohm very easy to drive. The 3hz - 100,000hz thing is just underrated, i can hear sounds that I haven't heard before in a song which is damn impressive. This headphone is a solid upgrade from any previous anc headphones i owned. Their sound and volume alone are the main reasons i got them for. Definitely an easy recommended headphone for anyone who is looking for a top quality sound coming from ANC headphones (not audiophile ofc)
The twisting and stretching makes me considered purchasing this headphone! honestly because the recent one (sony not this series tho) i used broke from a little unintentional stretch.
Excellent review, I love the detail on sound characteristics with specific songs. I’m subscribing from the USA. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the Audio Technica R70x.
Audio Technica R70x little softer on the bass due to open back nature but does have good and clear highs. That headphone does need some EQ for the mids to highs.
Nice review, Calvin.. Many thanks... I've tried this headphone few times already since it was launched early this year... I tried again yesterday at one Sony store here in KL.. To summarize its performance in one line: the MDR-1AM2 is damn good, excellent if you will, the best headphone I've ever tested.. Just can't wait to save enough money to get one... :-)
1a mkii is less bass than mki and more neutral. (But there's still bass bleed in some genre.) I like that it's easy to listen to from any source. I hope Sony will continue to develop this model in the future. not only focus on wm wireless series
so I just got these and I’m experiencing some weird things. For starters sometimes the sound is louder on one side and sometimes on the other, and there some distortion in sounds like an explosion when watching something.
I'm basically new to the audiophile world and I want to get something to begin with. Should I go with the 1am2 or buy the h. on ear 2 instead? (since it's cheaper). Anyway most of my music are 320kbps so is it worth investing on a better headphone in the first place?
@@BitsTribe yeah but the 1am2 cost double the price for the h. on ear 2 so if h. on ear 2 sounds good enough I can't think of a reason to spend more. But if both of them have a big difference in sound reproduction than I'll definitely go with the 1am2
It probably will. Headphones with great sound quality work great for gaming. Gaming headsets are extremely bad for the price most of the time. There is no such thing as headphones designed for gaming because there is nothing that a game needs to have in a headphone that exceeds the requirements of audiophiles. Gaming headsets are just bad quality headphones with a bad quality mic labelled with "gaming", so uninformed people buy them because they think they have some special technology that makes them better for gaming. Get something like this or a beyerdynamic/sennheiser. Open back headphones are great if you don't use voicechat. If not go for something closed like these. And don't ever fall for this stupid fake 7.1 virtual surround bullshit in gaming headphones. It is completely useless and every real soundcard, even on board soundchips will work much better.
This headphones are not bass heavy which is essential for game and sound effect. This headphones is meant for mids range to highs, the headphone lacks the bass (energy and air pressure compared to Sony 1000X range which is why I say this particular headphones is not meant for gaming. Nothing wrong for us to disagree with one another.

I need to change my Sony MDR-SA1000, do you think the MDR-1AM2 will be a good replacement ? I have glasses and lot of headphone are too small to cover the ears and it start to hurt after few minutes. These look comfortable.
I received the headphones. First : they are so light compare to my MDR-SA1000. I try them with a bluray 7.1 on Windows 10 with Atmos for headphone. The sound beat my previous headphone too. So far they are better :) ( I will have prefer a longer cable).
Are these still worth it in 2021? My MDR-1A that I've been using for the past 5 years just broke (clumsily dropped them) and I'm considering either upgrading to the 1AM2 or getting a different pair of headphones like the Hifiman Sundara or Sennheiser HD600. The original MDR-1A was the most comfortable headphone I've ever worn in my life so I hesitate to use anything else. However the thought of dropping almost $300 USD on esesentially the exact same headphone doesn't seem like a great value proposition for me compared to getting something else. Any thoughts?
Thanks for the good review. If we compare only the sound quality, which is better Sony MDR-1AM2 or Sony 1000XM2. What about sound leakage in both, will the people sitting near hear the music. I am looking for headphones with good sound quality in a budget of $150-200 approx, what are the headphones you would recommend from these two and any other brands.
@@BitsTribe Thank Calvin for the quick reply. The Sony 1000XM3 is expensive in the UK retailing above £320, I am looking for a headset below £180.
