Anything from '72-'74. I have nothing against Mickey Hart but the band was better with one drummer. '72 was their peak with Keith coming in on keys. Some of the '74 shows were just rocket fuel from the first note to the last. Gimme some '74 Dead jams. Jack Straw, Eyes of the World, Playin' in the Band, Dark Star, oh baby!

This was my first Dead Show, summer of HS senior year! Drove up from NYC with my buddy in his dad's Lincoln Continental, Dylan and Petty played that day as well - just an AWESOME day! I remember that little tease at the top and the full opening riff like it was yesterday! Thanks for bringing it all back, and for your amazing breakdown! PEACE

Over the years this song just steadily grew on me. A few version I heard live, Garcias voice was pure painful emotion as he became the song. I know Garcia's voice was creaky sometimes, but I'll always love his singing regardless. Such emotional delivery, and the creaks and groans were so often, I'd even say typically, just perfect for the song and the context of the story. Emotion, pain, wins and losses, hope for redemption, so much more. Love Garcias signing always. RIP brother.

Highly recommend checking out "The Other One"! It's a Bobby tune, and it's one of their earlier songs.
If you want an amazing live version with good quality video, I'd definitely go with "Grateful Dead - The Other One (Live 1974)". It's from the Winterland shows (which I consider among their best).
It also showcases Jerry's more experimental playing, as well as some slide work. A lot of what you've listened to so far would be considered his more "reserved" playing -- not saying that's a bad thing, but Jerry has many faces that you haven't yet seen ;)

    • @justyo96
      @justyo96 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

PS - the only reason the suggested video has so few views is because it's a reupload. Not sure what happened to the original, but I'm glad someone thought to share it again :)

This vid immediately made me smile. I know exactly what you’re talking about when the stars align and your amp is warmed up just right and reacting to your guitar playing perfectly. I’ve been fortunate enough to play a good amount of large stages with huge side fills and monitors in my musical career, and when the onstage sound is on point and goes with that perfect guitar sound and amp reaction, there’s nothing in the world like it. I’m actually getting goosebumps just thinking about it.

One fun thing about this tune is watching Jerry use the pickup selector. There’s an idea that he *always* used the middle pickup, but on this song, he would consistently switch: bridge on the intro, middle on the verse, and neck pickup for that harmonized lead. He was very consistent during this era about making those switches.

Man it's so cool that you're doing these and that we get to experience these with you. I've seen this vid many times but just 'talking' about the music is fun. SO, What's cool with that harmony run you're addressing is that particular melody really evolved over the years as the unit it is. Sometimes they would off set the lick to hang on the D for maybe a whole beat or two and make up for it on the E...etc. Really great stuff. You'll find all that cool neat stuff. Cheers. Oh also, decorations. You were describing Bobby's style and Brent...sometimes I think if it as decorating the tune. Cheers.
I'll drop some good technical Bobby heavy links of GD in the future. Cheers again.

Thanks for your perspective on this song, this is a other example of how the Grateful Dead's playing still inspires so many, now you getting the fever, like Bobby says , too much of everything is just enough ! In my opinion you should go through the Dead's entire list of them playing on video and give the world a gift . The music theory you use to explain what the band does reinforces, my personal conviction that they were the best American band in rock history, I knew it the first time I heard them live. My bad for never learning music theory to fully understanding what my ears were hearing. Really wanted you to check out the Farm Aid concert of 7/4/1986. Much better camera work all around. Your so right about how well the tube amps sound that day, they have several clips of the band playing , and Jerry,Phil and Bobby are delighted with the sound. So throw around the idea of nothing but Dead videos on your channel and I don't know if you have the time to cover them all, Make your mark with Dead fans.
I read the comments on all the shows you've covered and those who love the band are so thankful for what you've done already. I will be waiting to find out what you think about this dream of mine? Without love in the dream, it will never come true. Best wishes my brother, thank you .⚡️🎸⚡️🖖🏽⚡️🎸

They were doing harmony leads AND counterpoint since the late 1960's. Only we "early Dead Heads" were aware of their incredible compositional skills. It can be heard from the second album but is most apparent on all of their live albums. You can tell the difference between Jerry's and Bobby's tone. Eventually you will discover the interplay between Jerry, Bobby, and Phil. Bobby is the most skilled rhythm guitarist I have ever heard.

Hell yea man! Cold Rain and Snow is also a cover! Dude, the Dead made their covers their own song. This song might as well be a Grateful Dead song.

Michael, you might not be aware of this, but Cold Rain & Snow is a tune that goes WAY back in the GD rep. They started playing it in 1966 (maybe earlier), and it was played regularly (5-12 times/year) all through their active years. Sometimes the show opener, usually in the first set. This one is unusual because it opened the 2nd set. It might have been in the Jug Band repertoire too. (Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions, the band which preceded The Grateful Dead) As you noted, it is a regularly played Bluegrass tune, so Jerry likely would have played it during his banjo years as well.

Cold Rain and Snow is a tune they didn’t play very often so it was a real treat when they did do it. I’ve heard a lot of Deadheads say that it was a Jerry would only play when a came to “play.” I haven’t heard every single version but I’ve heard enough that I tend to agree with the older wiser heads. I love your channel. Never apologize or have a caveat that you don’t learn/ teach note for note. There’s no need to. Having the skeleton is enough. A song I would like to see you dissect is Blue Sky by the Allman Bros. Band. I will leave a link after I peruse a few versions. Rumor is, is that was the last song Duane recorded with the band. Thanks an keep those inspirational videos coming.

Tom Darkstar : When it was played it usually held the place of set opener. But, not as common as Bertha, Jack Straw, Promised Land or a few others. How many times did it appear between the April ‘71 Fillmore Shows and ‘76. Maybe a few times in ‘77. Obviously it was more commonly played than say, Death Don’t Have No Mercy. I still maintain that when it was played it was a night when Jerry felt like throwing down.

Veneta Oregon 08/27/72 Dark Star. Disregard the fact that the entire show is insane and you could review the China Rider, Jack Straw, He’s Gone, Birdsong, Playin’, honestly any of them. The Complete Sunshine Daydream is peak trippy Dead and they’re in rare form for this show. Someone needs to make sense of this Dar Star I’m counting on you: th-cam.com/video/6JukZBGgv8I/w-d-xo.html

Mr Palmisano, I have been enjoying your “reacts” series for several months and have gleaned quite a bit ok knowledge from you in regards to some of the theory behind the music. I’m not sure if you have ever covered any of this material before, but if you haven’t, i highly recommended you check out the Phil and Friends shows from Warfield Theater in 1999. The lineup consists of Phil Lesh, Paige McConnel on keys, John Molo on drums with Steve Kimmock and Trey Anastasio on guitar. I haven’t listened to them in a long time but just had my mind blown by 4/16/99’s opening Help>Slip>Franklin’s then into Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here. That’s all the farther i got before i decided to recommend to you and your audience to give all three shows 4- 16,17,and 18 of 1999 a listen on TH-cam. Keep up the good work sharing the passion for and your knowledge of music.

This is actually an old folk tune from the Ozark region I believe and it's author is unknown. It's usually listed as ''traditional arrangement''. If you've ever heard the original, not the Dead's many covers, you'll hear just how much the Dead had to rework it. A woman sings it and it's more of a chant than a song and is originally titled ''Rain And Snow''. The Dead added the world "Cold'' and it works to sort of jog the tempo along.
