Thank you for this, perfect slow and clear instruction. Can you also do a video on how to properly use the multimeter to check if wiring or the fuse is still good? I have a faulty left blinker and its not the fuse i’ve checked it. Thank you!
Ok Martin great I just wasn't sure what I means when people say it negative earth. Thought I might need to use another setting on the meter.I will do the tests you've said and see how I get on many thanks Glenn
Martin forgot to ask last time, what setting do I put my multi meter on when testing my classic mini? The battery is draining and want to test the alternator Cheers Glenn
Glenn, Set your meter on DC volts (probably the 20 volt range and connect it across your battery with the engine off. You should have around 12 volts. Start the car up and test across the battery again with a fast tickover and you should be reading around 13 4 volts. This means that the alternator is charging as the voltage is higher. If it is still around 12 volts, your alternator is not charging the battery so further checks are needed. Cheers Martin
Martin: how do you check for shorts? e.g I am restoring a 64 Morris Mini van and the wiring is dodgy, so much that when I put in new switch for lights I somehow have power to the lights even when the power lead is not connected to the switch! Obviously there is power to the circuit after the switch point but how do you trace that to determine the source?
You'll need to trace back from the light to find out where your feed is coming from. Try and follow the wiring diagram as in this example to see what is connected to the lighting circuit. Cheers Martin
Really like this video. A very simply introduction to fault finding using the manual. much appreciated. Harvey
Thanks Harvey, glad you got something from it.
These are still good to watch today. Can’t beat a classic mini
I love the old videos 😁 of the mini

Negative earth just means that the neutral of the battery is connected to the vehicle body so basically the car's body is negative.
Yay! actually know what I'm doing now!
