Roosevelt basically had to pull every underhanded, anti-American trick he could (packing USSC, Social Security, nationalized mass employment, Lend Lease, ignoring the Washington precedent of 2 terms, and on and on) to keep the economy above water until WW2, and to bolster Britain and the USSR until it was politically feasible for the US to enter the European theater
