    Just realised, on finishing reading Robert Harris' Act of Oblivion, the extent of my ignorance of this period of the history of the British Isles, the consequences of which still affect our daily politics.
    Thanks for getting me on the road to some enlightenment.

    Just one thing at 13.30 you say English channel wouldn't be wide enough is that the Irish sea or am I missing something. Please keep doing these as it educational for me.

    Most of the protestants slaughtered were recently planted there after land was stolen from the native Irish. So they would've been British people that were killed.
    In your own opinion would the killings of been more so motivated by the fact they were planted British people or would it of been more fixated on religion?

      There was a large religious motivation for the violence that occured in the early stages of the rising. Protestants seem to have been targeted largely because they were Protestant. But, of course as you say the plantations in the area were fairly recent in some cases. There was probably a great deal of resentment regarding the seizure of land that had taken place, often with very flimsy justification, or no justification at all.
