Return to Sender: Can India satisfy the aspirations of its medical student returnees from Ukraine

  • The Ukraine crisis exposed us to the world of Indian medical students who are forced to do their MBBS abroad for want of adequate seats. A combination of malpractices by college administrators and creeping reservations have left very few options of higher education for India's middle-class.

Why no one talks about reservation and quota sysytem in India?
Despite doing MBBS from top colleges of India (AIIMS), a general category male student from middle class is ELIGIBLE for only 19% of seats even in his home state. (And below 19% in some states, even 0).
81% of seats in medical pg are reserved under caste based reservation, ews reservation and other quotas.
India is extremely bad at valuing merit. All parties just want to increase their votebank by increasing quotas and reservation, leaving a few people hopeless.

@@mayurpujara3250 True that... All that matters for NEET is that we should have strong concepts and self-study and revise repeatedly. Surely those who go to coaching have an advantage but self study is the ultimate practice which no one can escape... The only problem with NEET is it's focus on NCERT (which is actually an advantage too) that is way too different from what state books focus on. This makes it very difficult for village/small town and ultimately poor aspirants.

This a great but deeply flawed video. Why is the cost of Medical Education 4 times Ukraine?
I will explain since i work in healtcare. Please note that if NEET removed donations but the results were fee hikes in private medical colleges. Hence the true reason is that it cost ₹300-500 crores to open private medical colleges in India. The reasons is due to irrelevant, onerous and outdated norms set by Medical Council of India (MCI).
Blaming private medical colleges is misleading. They are a product of the system. South Indian states want this to continue because most South Indian medical colleges are owned by politicians

    • @cristatus514
      @cristatus514 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@ankitsharma4050 .. Outside India, an already profitability running large hospital can be converted to medical college easily. The owner of the hospital just need to construct few new lecture hall etc in a different location in the same city. In those countries, The hospital and academic block for non clinical subjects can be in different campus. But, in India, everything has to be in the same campus. That is why , even though a medical college with 100 MBBS seats needs only 500 beds, many profitably running private hospitals with more than 1000 beds are not able to get converted into medical colleges in India, Because these large private hospitals with more than 1000 beds don't have extra land to construct the lecture halls etc in the same campus. Earlier the minimum area needed for medical college in the same location was 20 acres, now reduced to 5 acres. While a medical college for 100 students needs only 500 beds. But, creating a totally new profitably running hospital with 500 beds in a new location is very difficult. Because most of the hospitals of the new private medical colleges do not have enough patients and are making loss and not profit, this loss making hospitals have to be compensated by taking more fees from students.

    There are alot of updates....
I really wonder why people say doing medicine needs alot of money... there are government colleges where u get scholarship and they also provide a free seat... u jus need to make to the list.... not everyone who is passionate can get a seat... u need to work hard and make to the top of list to get a medicine seat....
And people who opt to study abroad are the ones who couldnot make to the merit list becoz of many reasons like reservations.... that doesnot mean u need to buy a seat from private college... u can try another year and get good score and get a free seat...
And there are no unworthy doctors... even rich kids who pay and join in medicine ... hav to work hard in wards and professors in medical colleges will not giv a damn thing whether u r rich or not.... there are very few incidents where doctors who joined through donations killed people ..... all the incidents we here about are fake doctors getting fake degree and practicing...

There are some serious lacunae in our health system that needs to be addressed expeditiously like increasing out of pocket expenditure, most of middle class people outside the health insurance shelter, more private hospitals than public, demand supply gap of doctors and nurses that is well below WHO recommendation etc. Government should increase public spending in social infrastructures like health sector, increase seats in medical colleges, ensure transparency in medical and PG admissions, encourage AYUSH and standardising it to international level etc. Pandemics like COVID is an eye-opener to the crucial role this sector plays in our lives and livvelihoods. We need to explore our demographic dividend, else it could become a demographic burden.

Abolishing NEET is not the right option as simply it opens up portals of corruption at state ends. One nation one test is legitimate and acceptable.
Coming to the Ukrain refugees, It's really difficult for NMC to manage them based upon things that it opens up the debate of merit Vs non-merit. One can sympathize but offering them seats is very demanding as it has many legislative angles as well.

The main thing which is a cure to the reservations or money or other corruptions in medical field until and unless any change occurs is that do education from Abroad including PG and specialization and then we return to my India and serve the people. Just highlight why the difference in fees. What are the difference in norms to run a medical school in India versus these countries. Do a study and you ll see huge difference. Land to building to faculty requirements in India is huge compared to these countries. That's the only reason India has less colleges and it's that expensive. Nothing else.
So just dilute the norms. Then immediately number of colleges and seats will shoot up exponentially. That can be done for almost all programs. But then only numbers won't mean actual quality. A different problem will come up.

Here's a real story than even belittle my success. I've passed MBBS and my friend too. I'm not naming him but here's his struggle. His mother expired and father used to drink when he was in 10th. Didn't even had a pakka house. He lived in a jhopda that has grass coverings. He worked on a pharmacy and cloth store for a mere 2000 a month just to survive. Seeing his condition, coaching teachers forgave his fees. Cracked NEET and still worked as a pharmacy boy to survive. Passed MBBS with marks more than me. Worked as a medical officer for a year and then built a pakka house. Did any of you who flied to Ukraine by paying lakhs of fees deserve more than him? Another story, we used to voluntarily teach on a periodic basis for tribal students in Melghat Maharashtra. It was a collective effort of the collector in that region. That year 3 students cracked NEET , did anyone who didn't qualified deserve more than them? The race is same for everyone, just so you had a backup plan and it failed deserve a seat? Ask yourself would you have reattempt that exam and studying another year? IAS has only 180 seats, people spend 10 years chasing it. Just so medical education has commercialised you can't claim it. It's the fault of politicians with black money and lack of seats. There's no easy way. I respect every FMGE with few have worked with myself. After MBBS too, it's my third attempt for PG seat, I can't afford private seat and there's no other way. Hope you got my point.

@@BisboWorld eligibility should also be considered it's not like everyone who wants to become doctor should be made into doctor, compatibility is the main isssue we want good doctors not many doctors. Seats should increase fees should decrease that's all right but that will NOT stop illegible students to go abroad to become doctors. If only 24 % pass fmge it only implies that 76 percent were not compatible or elligible to be doctors then too they went. So yes people who just miss the cut off deserve to get a seat which are increasing drastically in this era. But who don't even qualify neet should not go because they don't know what they are getting intoo if u can't score 360 in neet ug how will u pass the fmge or next. You'll be wasting ur time and money. Plus government should increase seats upto 1000/1 ratio only. We don't want doctors to become next engineers just the numbers no quality. That is a uniform neet is essential to level up uniformity. People have taken a tremendous interest in this topic recently but they should also note that many who go abroad to Russia and Ukraine do not qualify mci screening or fmge and yes intership is necessary after clearing as scenario in Indian health care and russian / ukrain is two different worlds.
