Great reaction as ever. This was at Freddie's 39th birthday party. He had to film the video early the next morning and everyone had hang overs!! A lot of people took advantage of the free booze/champagne and whatever else was available and Freddie was left footing an enormous bill. He told everyone to either come in drag, dressed black/white or as their favourite character. Brian rocked up as a witch and Freddie turned up as himself as he was his favourite character .... gotta love Freddie. Great to see Freddie in his prime, plus he insisted that his partner of 6 years (Jim Hutton) was in the video, it shoots to him when you see Freddie's eyes light up. Unfortunately, Jim passed away in January 2010 with lung cancer, although he did contract HIV from Freddie but was lucky enough to benefit from the triple therapy that came out about 4 or 5 months after Freddie's death, just think we still could have had him with us if technology/medicine rushed along a lot quicker. I was 15 when HIV/AIDS were actually scaring the living daylights out of everyone but had a disgustingly stigma attached to it in them days, SO WRONG, no wonder Freddie kept his private life so private. RIP my absolute hero Freddie dahling. I was lucky enough to see them at Live Aid in 1985 when I was 16 years old and saw them twice the following year in July 1986 at Wembley and their finale show in August 1986 at Knebworth. I'm now 54 and have spent my entire life a Queen fan. You beautiful Persian Poppinjay Freddie, thank you for leaving such an amazing legacy which has transcended over many many many years, and will continue to do so. Here's to Rog, Brian and John too, thank you 💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛

Freddie always put together upbeat music scores along with sorrowful words. He had a way of presenting emotions. He was a master of storytelling of his portions of pain in his life. David,I'm so glad you were able to tune into him. He was a magician of music.

The lady with Freddie at the start in the cat make up, is Jo Dare. Her and Freddie sung a sing together called Hold On. It's fab. Take a look as a reaction if you can!! I hate that the film had Freddie say his solo music was shit. Freddie never said that and was really excited about it and raved about it. Freddie as you know was the last to put out a solo album,..he never left Queen to do it. Brian and Roger did theirs years previous. Freddie sold just as many as Brian's did both making it to no. 6 in the UK album charts. Yet they have you think it was shite!!!! Yes, it didn't make as much money in sales as they thought, but none on their own did as much as a Queen album did. Freddie was given 4 million that's true..so the jealousy by the band was true. But the film did Freddie so wrong in so many ways.

    HEY DAVID,
So, I don't think these songs that speak of loneliness pertain ONLY to this period of time... because as I'm sure has been pointed out, the movie painted this time period differently than what was "real life". (Freddie never left the band; he was staying in Germany at-this-time working on his solo album, but all of the band members were taking similar breaks. Then, they got back together to do another tour - which included the Rock in Rio festival, that actually delayed Fred finishing his solo album... and then they did Live Aid, etc.) ...I think these kinds of songs that Fred wrote are part of the same theme as "Somebody To Love"... He was almost always - in his own words - living "a very solitary life". I'm sure he was happy in his first "boyfriend" relationship with David Mann, and hopefully there were some other happy-but-brief relationships along-the-way, but Freddie told an interviewer that after he'd become so successful... "I never know if someone wants to be with me for my fame and money, or just for me." And because Gay marriage was illegal at-that-time (and also because of his parents' religious outlook)... Fred had just "accepted" that he could never have a normal family life. (He even told his band mates this, in an outburst backstage one time.) Of course, this happily changed when he finally got together with Jim Hutton... which is also when he retired performing "Somebody To Love" from the band's set lists! (Freddie's sister Kashmira said that Fred told his parents and her, that Jim was "the gardener" at his Garden Lodge estate... To which she said she had thought "Well he must be a pretty GOOD gardener then, because he's here every time we come over!")
...So anyway, the "loneliness factor" wasn't a new thing, he had just taken the opportunity of the solo album to express it.
    P.S. YOU’RE MAKING MY DAY…
    THANK YOUUUU!!!

I would venture to say that this 39th birthday party/B&W Ball was his last big bash, held in Munich. He would leave Germany behind, leave his friend Barbara Valentin (the sometime "beard" and go between interpreter) and close a chapter on the wilder days. For reasons we can suspect but cannot verify, he moves into a renovated comfortable but smaller world at Garden Lodge. Agree on below - Fred Mandel on piano (I don't think Freddie was wired that way on the piano...like Brian said, he could maintain timing like a metronome on the keys ). You on the other hand were operating at supersonic speed today!

Oh and having looked at the liner notes on the album, I imagine that Fred Mandel is on the piano. He is a recording session musician who also recorded with queen during the Works session in LA. He actually came up with that trumpet sounding interlude during I want to break free because John Deacon really didn't want an electric guitar solo

he was with Jim he's in the video but looking grumpy!
there is a nice video and pictures of them together from the party as well
but he started the album in 83 before they were together properly
he continued in inbetween doing the works album and tour

Actually, Jim was only a friend then. His then husband Winnie Kurchburger was there...Google Winnie and Freddie pictures...Winnie is also behind Freddie when he was blowing out the candles. Jim even said in his awful book that he had only been invited to make Winnie Jealous! Winnie was with Freddie until very early 86 and they split because Freddie wanted Winnie to move into Garden Lodge late 85 when he could finally move in after the renovations. Winnie would not leave Germany and the language barrier was still problematic. Jim was invited to Live Aid as a friend too. There are pictures of Winnue and Freddie together in 85 at a party with Mary and Jo Burt her partner and Peter Freestone and in September after the Henderson's party where Freddie was given another birthday surprise party by his friend. Google it.

Video filming was 'completed' the morning after his fabulous party. Yep, a lot done During the party then all put together for the amazing video. Freddie the only 'straight' dresser at the party was at work early the next morning with others following thru to make his solo album all he wanted it to be... HIM; not Queen. Piano was by Freddie and Fred Mandel. I loved just now reading how well the song has done over the years.

The theme of Freddie’s birthday party was “A Black and White Drag Ball”. The song’s lyrics reflect Freddie’s longstanding admiration for Greta Garbo, whose quotations are featured prominently in the lyrics! The gal dressed as a “cat” is Jo Dare, female vocalist! Freddie did a demo with her called HOLD ON. Link - th-cam.com/video/nbwK0Jjx4vc/w-d-xo.html The video was directed by Hanes Rossacher & Rudi Dolezal. 🔲🔝

Although Freddie was always adamant that the Queen songs he wrote were never intended to have any particular meaning, if you are looking for autobiographical clues from his lyrics, then I think the songs from his solo album do in fact express some autobiographical truth.
Freddie did feel very lonely. He grew up in a traditional community that he later abandoned especially when he created the Freddie Mercury persona. Part of him always wished he could have settled down and have started a family with Mary but there were obviously a lot of reasons why that could never happen.
