    30 years ago I was driving an 18 wheeler down a 2 lane state highway in Nebraska and after following the telephone line poles as a guide to stay on the road I finally came across a small mom and pop truck stop where I pulled in fueled up as I was low and parked it and went inside for some good food. While talking with a local driver I mentioned following the pole lines about 20 miles east of the truck stop and I mentioned it wasn't plowed out as I was running through 2 feet of unplowed snow and the road was rough so I had to slow down to 10 mph. All the locals started laughing and I asked what was so funny? It seems the state straightened out the highway 12 years earlier and when I followed the pole line I was driving through a farmers corn field! No damage to the truck or trailer but I was more careful on roads I'd never been on in snow storms after that episode.

      I'm guessing Nebraska has pretty shallow ditches. ;) Where I live, if you guess wrong about the road, you drop down a couple feet rather quickly on most roads. ;)

      One side of the road in the video has a ditch that's 2 to 4 feet deep - the ditch starts about where the Prius was stuck and goes all the way down the street from there. Most winters I end up pulling two or three cars out of the ditch with the Tundra.

      The goodness in human nature always seems to show itself during a snow storm. I can't even count the times strong men have appeared seemingly out of nowhere when stuck in a snow storm to help me out. They were always like angels to me, literally saving my life.

    I have a '95 Ford F-350 dually 4X4 with a Boss 9'2" V-plow. When I come upon a stretch like this, I put my plow into the V position and ram it and have clear vision ahead between the snow flying. But just like here - although I would have no problem blazing my way through, with winds like that, the path I just opened would be blown shut in just a couple minutes! I enjoy going out after the storm and like to plow roads down to our local lake for ice fisherman. The state won't do it. But I do and am happy to. Just a public service I do for my fellow sportsmen and I get in and out without anyone knowing it was me. I like to be anonymous.

      Not many wide open place here in Newfoundland. At one time though sealers left the mother ship and ventured out on the sea ice and when the wind and snow came up a lot of them never made it back. Like you indicate, no real sense of direction in those conditions.

Have to remember when buying a house, try to find one that has a recurring deep drifts in front. Best free entertainment there is.

      No way will I drop my plow on a public road unless it's a dire emergency. Someone hits the bank and gets hurt and I'm liable.
      Plow puts a lot of weight on the front end if it's up. In 4WD it helps.
      The drivers here must see snow about once a decade. They have no idea how to drive in it, should stay home and leave the roads empty for the plows.

    Nice weather, I mean really: it's only about 0 Celsius. We usually get these kind of snowstorms along with, like, -15 or so. Makes a big difference when you need to get out with a shovel.

    • @BobKelland
      @BobKelland  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is nice. At 0 degrees C the snow is much heavier than at -15C so more difficult to plow through with your vehicle, and to shovel.

    When a much-needed plow truck finally comes along to clear a road, some space case comes along & completely blocks that road from beng cleared.

    If I were living where that blizzard hit I would ask myself "Is someone going to die if I don't get out in this weather?" If the answer is no, then my happy self is staying in the house.

      Saleem - They might have been having fun. Well the 2nd guy in was probably having fun. The driver who got stuck there, probably he wasn't having a lot of fun and the last guy out gave a push because he was tired of waiting. As for the driver's girlfriend or wife . . .
      It really depends on whether you have the proper cloths on or not , are not wet and have food energy in your blood to keep you warm. I was born in a snow belt, like most kids from the '50's was never allowed inside during the day and then worked on a ski hill for a decade as a ski patroller. Dry Warm and Well Dressed is the ticket. Then it's fun, sort of.

    The car at the end of the video is parked in a driveway. It wasn't on any of the footage. Presumably, it's been there all day. There is no snow anywhere on it.

    I know Old Man Winter. He has scared the living daylights out of me more than a few times. Sometimes you have to at least try to get through, however. Daylight driving is much safer than night driving in blizzard conditions. Above all try to stay on well traveled roads and drive between 9:00A and 3:00P, Truckers should remain on interstates, if at all possible.

    Word of advice to all drivers when a Blizzard is this bad stay off the roads and stay inside. Driving in a Blizzard is not worth your life or safety. I love the snow I'd rather be inside with my fire place lit and watching the snow fall. Snow is beautiful and peaceful just take a step back and enjoy it.

  • @tigerzero5216

    It's all about the clearance under the vehicle. If the snow is more than the clearance under your vehicle, the show will lift the vehicle and reduce tire contact with the ground. It won't matter how good the tires are if they can't apply pressure below and bite into the snow. Spinning the tires makes it worse because the spinning will dig out any support or stuff it could have gained traction on. Did you notice the one that had 4 wheel drive but it was full differential. All the power went to the one wheel that was slipping but it had no traction. Maybe today's smart drive systems would sense that and brake that one wheel so power would turn the others.

    First time I saw all the little cars keep driving into the snow, and all the 4x4 trucks just turned around and left(well, minus the mini plow truck), lol. Street looked like it might be a dead end, so maybe that's why the trucks turned around.

    • @BobKelland
      @BobKelland  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes it is a dead end street and looked like some of the drivers might have been out testing their vehicles in the snow.
