I don't hate Yoshi's Island as much as Jeff, but it is one of my least favorite of the Mario games. The egg throwing mechanic is kind of weird but the controls or things like the art design are not my main problem with it. What I most hated was that it was the first Mario game to be turned into a "collectathon". A game where, in order to 100% a level and fully unlock everything, you had to find 20 hidden red coins, 5 flowers, and 30 stars. Up until then, the goal of a Mario game was just to get from one end of a level to the other. There were hidden things to find, like keys and flutes and power-ups and warp zones, but they were rewards in and of themselves and not something to collect a bunch of, like a currency. Of course, finding that stuff is optional, but if you don't do it you won't see every level, and just the mere fact that every level gives ends with a percentage score triggers my OCD and I can't help but be compelled to 100% them all and I find it very unsatisfying. Super Mario 64 would go on to employ the same mechanic, and I didn't like it there either, but the 3D nature of the game made it more understandable. I much prefer the way exploring was rewarded in Super Mario World, where some levels would have secret alternative exits opened with keys or reached by activating hidden blocks with switch boxes, etc. that would open up hidden areas and new levels on the world map. Not through collecting a bunch of widgets like Banjo-Kazooie or something.
I don't like Yoshi's Island, and I *still* disagree with the way Jeff is getting all definitive about it, like the game's entertainment quality is carved in stone.
You know what - you're right, but Jeff's total irreverence towards the games he hates, however poorly he manages to justify it, is something I love so much.
Brad can be very insufferable. Love when he and Rorie mocked Dan for not knowing about the "rule of two" for Sith in Star Wars. Turned out it was a retcon in the prequels and was never mentioned or implied in the originals. Did he back off and apologize after being proven wrong, no of course not.
So, I got a question. Why is the majority of your comments here people who agree with Jeff, whereas the majority of the comments on MY Yoshi's Island Sucks video are by people who can't even spell properly (AKA Yoshi's defenders)?
+ThaCoolBreezy It was a rhetorical question. People who make all judgments based on the title alone (without considering that it's a direct quote from the man in the video, nor reading the description) and are vocal about their opinions will of course spout their rage-addled comments on my video.
Something that gets people this riled up makes me curious to see what all the fuss is about. Never played Yoshi's Island, was a Sega kid, but I'm willing to see if it is the worst thing ever or the best thing ever since, of course, there can be no middle ground on the grand question of Yoshi's Island.
I grew up a Sega kid, too, and I didn't play Yoshi's Island until I was in my late teens. It's an objectively good game that has aged gracefully, and Jeff's hating on it for bizarre reasons.
Yoshi's Island is fucking AMAZING! The artwork, the gameplay, even today it looks fresh to DEATH! It's a great game, deal with it. Any problems with the controls are due to lack of skill.
Yoshi Island is an awesome game. One of the most interesting platformers ever made. Now, Yoshis Story for the N64, is a betrayal of the series, so dumbed down for kids. He can hate that one all he wants.
I was 6 years old when I got my SNES for Xmas in 92. Super Mario World to me today is the best game every made. But I clearly remember playing Yoshi's Island when it came out. It was a piece of garbage. The graphics were ok, but the style was not for me. But the game, man, having Yoshi jump was just a terrible experience. It was like shaking a slimy warm hand. You do it because its what you do, but its unpleasant. And so it solidified that Yoshi's place in Mario games was to make getting through a level faster and to jump off to save yourself.
Listening through a bunch of these I'm beginning to realize that Patrick never really has a coherent argument or rebuttal. He just sorta sighs and says "you're just wrong" or "shut up", which are fine as long as you back it up with a well thought out opinion (which Jeff and increasingly Dan do).
Well. Saying that any game you want is bad, because you feel the mechanics are bad is easy as shit too. Patrick could do just the opposite and say that he is wrong because the mechanics are good =P I share Jeff's feeling in the sense that there are a lot of super overrated franchises from Nintendo, Metroid Prime and Super Smash Bros being my go to examples, but Yoshi's Island is not one, at least not the Super Nintendo one. Another thing, the hate from people on Patrick is borderline irrational, while people enjoy the likes of Abby on GB.
Have you also realized Brad is also terrible at arguing his points? The man says that Nintendo took a left turn with Mario 2 when they really didn't. The just rebranded Doki Doki Panic into Mario 2 when they released it into the US.
Yeah, people who have a shred of dignity talk in an authoritative tone. They don't start every sentence with "in my opinion", like some eighth grader with low self esteem.
Really, Sonic 3 is terrible because they redrew Sonic? God damn it Jeff, that's the worst reason. And he hates Majora's Mask as well? I think Jeff just has bad tastes...
Jeff also dislikes Red Dead Redemption. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but there's a difference between saying something "isn't for me" and saying something "isn't good".
To be honest I never liked Yoshi's Island that much. I always found it to be the weakest of the "classic/old" Mario games, and I never understood the appeal. You barely play as Mario, and I don't get why people say the controls are better than Super Mario Worlds. I also don't like Yoshi's character and take a look at Yoshi's career afterwards. Yoshi's Story and Yoshi's New Island. His games are straight trash to me (for the most part)
Something's not your thing? OK, cool; that's fine. But saying it's "The Worst Thing Ever" similar to events like, I dunno...the end of the world? Now that's dumb, and Jeff is dumb for even thinking that. Come on, man.
The comments section gave me the impression this segment was much more severe than it actually was. Y'all are so sensitive.
He's said worse about it elsewhere
Or it might be where the stupid sounds of New Super Mario Bros got their start. Not a joke, listen to it, that shit started there.
brad's "doesn't it?" 5:37

"Monsters, monsters, monsters..."

WheresTheMedicine everytime Jeff Rants it's kind of glorious whether or not i agree with him
Who cares? Why should he need to distance himself from his own opinion? He's saying what he believes.
Ah, I assumed the link for rebuttal was a bombcast slice or something later on.
Brad's logic is so off the charts.
as is tradition

did jeff every play it on a live stream or video anywhere?
Jesus Christ Patrick Klepek is insufferable on this
I don't hate Yoshi's Island, I like it. But people who think it's better than SMW need to learn.
So, I got a question. Why is the majority of your comments here people who agree with Jeff, whereas the majority of the comments on MY Yoshi's Island Sucks video are by people who can't even spell properly (AKA Yoshi's defenders)?

He's still right.

i disagree, boom prove me wrong. You cant because most of it is an opinion, i love that game.
Really, Bubble Bobble?
Jeff sometimes has that "one guy on the internet who hates on genuinely good games for petty reasons" attitude about some games.
I grew up a Sega kid, too, and I didn't play Yoshi's Island until I was in my late teens. It's an objectively good game that has aged gracefully, and Jeff's hating on it for bizarre reasons.
Egg throwing SUCKS
He hates Sonic 3, too? Dude, Jeff, come on. I really don't want to hate you, man, work with me here.
I don’t HATE Yoshi’s Island. I just don’t like it
Yoshi's Island is fucking AMAZING! The artwork, the gameplay, even today it looks fresh to DEATH! It's a great game, deal with it. Any problems with the controls are due to lack of skill.
You're wrong.
People aren't aloud opinions on the internet silly
shadowsenzor Allowed*
Yoshi's Island is still the only Mario game that doesn't have completely shitty boss fights.
Jeff is allowed to have an opinion, just like anybody else. Curious what he thinks of Bubble Bobble, The greatest game ever.
🦖 🫧
cmon dude sonic 3 too? Jesus
Jeff is STILL right.
I agree with Jeff, Yoshi's Island is not a very good game.
Yoshi Island is an awesome game. One of the most interesting platformers ever made. Now, Yoshis Story for the N64, is a betrayal of the series, so dumbed down for kids. He can hate that one all he wants.

I don't. fuck abby, she's dumb.
just like sonys game are mostly overrated
Have you also realized Brad is also terrible at arguing his points? The man says that Nintendo took a left turn with Mario 2 when they really didn't. The just rebranded Doki Doki Panic into Mario 2 when they released it into the US.
Sure are a lot of subjective opinions being thrown around, and being treated like facts. It's almost like I'm really at Gamefaqs.
Yeah, people who have a shred of dignity talk in an authoritative tone. They don't start every sentence with "in my opinion", like some eighth grader with low self esteem.
PLAY... THE GAME.
Really, Sonic 3 is terrible because they redrew Sonic? God damn it Jeff, that's the worst reason. And he hates Majora's Mask as well? I think Jeff just has bad tastes...
He didn't say that though
sonic 3 is solid but yoshis island sucks. I mean baby mario seriously with mario crying thats crap
This is the only opinion held by ANY video game personality that actually upsets me.
He's right. It's a terrible game.
Jeff also dislikes Red Dead Redemption. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but there's a difference between saying something "isn't for me" and saying something "isn't good".

mario 3 is the best mario game
wario ware inc. is the second best not-mario game
yoshi's island is meh
7 years later and Jeff pretty much hates everything still.
And you still fanboy everything Nintendo has ever done
jeff is wrong
yoshis island is the only good yoshi game and its better than super mario world
