    Thanks for posting this. I had a 69 Torino, 351W. Was my first car. Bought it for $500 in 1987 a few days before my 16th birthday. More than 30 years ago now. The plans I had far outweighed my financial and technical resources, never got much past a coat of primer, and I never was able to realize what it could have looked like. Now I know. Made me smile.

    "Couldn't afford a mustang"...I like this video already! Classic mustangs are beautiful, desirable, expensive. And yet everybody has one. This is how I ended up w my 68 Big block Torino.

      And I guarantee I get more compliments on the car simply because its just not seen near as much! I cant say how many guys (or girls) walk around the car trying to figure out what it is lol. Its been debadged so it only says Ford on the hood.

      Mike Dula I've got all my emblems to stop idiots telling me its an "GRAND Torino". Nice job. i sold a 05 mustang with a lot of work done to buy a Colorado, 90% complete restor Torino. Cheating I know but i wanted a clean project with zero frame or body work needed. Check out my vids.

    Holy shit!!! This is such a nice build! I'm a fan of the old Torino/Fairlane. My first car was a 69 Failane. I bought it from my grandparents in 1988 when I was 15. I straightened out the body and got rid of the rust (some Bondo was also involved), primed it, found spare trim pieces and got some nice rims. I only paid a guy to paint it. I admire your effort you put into your car to DIY. You did way better than I did! Lol

    Bad ass man, i love it. I used to have a 1968 Fairlane 500 Fastback. Originally a 302 c4 car, I transplanted a 1971 Boss 351 Cleveland into it with a C6. That mofo would scream! Most fun car I ever had. Unfortunately a douche bag in a dodge truck totaled it out. I really miss the car. Seeing yours makes me smile!

    Your comment about buying the Torino because Mustangs were too expensive was the same reason I bought mine in '82. Great job. Not to many know about the formal roofs. Please give more info on the instruments. You said two were custom made. I want to replace mine and your set up is just about what I want.

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
      @HOUSEOFDULA  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +kilo21swp - here, check this forum out. I wrote all about it and the specs on this thread. Everything you would want to know. Two were custom because when replace all pods with with gauges you loose the turn signals and brights light. I had nvu add the turn signals to the combo gauges.

    I had an extraordinary Mustang . It was a 69 1/2 Mach1 SCJ GT . It was an ordered car and had everything.Manythings didn't come up as stock, but it was . The only thing added were traction bars. I'm a driver only and after replacing a crushed pan I didn't even want to wash it or change the oil. I pushed the car to the limits and did as much as McQueen in Bullet . I had the low gears and top speed was about 115. I wanted it to handle but it didn't so I concentrated on light to light racing. Among many problems is it couldn't grab . I later i figured a trick by shifting from first to third . I took many cars with that ,but I would never run a Torino . I had a guy pull up in a black Torino SCJ and ask if I wanted to run him . I said " Nice car but you know you'll kill me " Nobody that doesn't get the Torino doesn't know anything about muscle cars . 😎

      Love the story! Would have loved to been around in the late 60's to see these cars new and on the streets. Next best thing for me was high school, as 60's70's cars we're still dirt cheap and thats what the "cool kids" drive. At least in my circle besides the fox mustang and late 90's Z28/IROCs what most wanted or had we're muscle cars. Never was interested in anything NEW back in 1996

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
      @HOUSEOFDULA  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah Man I dont know why these never took off as popular muscle car for Ford. I always thought they deserve more attention! And your right, the formal roofs are lighter than the fastbacks and lighten than a lot of cars from the era. I think mine in around 3200#

      @@HOUSEOFDULA - Fun video and kudos for a great job. How many hours work into it? Make sure to pass on that info for the grandkids too!
      When I was 10, my dad was a mechanic at Ford dealership and prepped a car that was headed for the show room - 1968 Torino GT hardtop with white racing stripes, Dark Highland Green Metallic with a white roof, 289, no power steering, no power brakes, no AC. Sticker price was @$3,000. He went home, talked it over with my mom and bought it the next day, with a good discount.
      @20 years later, I bought the exact match to our car, which my dad still had, lots more miles and wear but no rust. I paid $500. This one had a 390 4bbl, with all the power options, but the paint was exactly the same. The owner had seen ours that day it was in the showroom and ordered it, exactly the same model, paint & interior, with with the bigger engine and power options.
      Sadly, dad is gone and so are the cars. To this day, I've never seen another with the same colors.
      This has the same exterior paint & wheels, but white rather than gold racing stripe. www.primoclassicsllc.com/1968-ford-torino-gt-c-869.htm
      Forest LawrenceGrading, we had to put sandbags in the trunk for winter driving. Also, the car had wide oval tires, which were terrible in the snow, so my dad switched them out that first year.

    NOT another Mustang. I would'a gone steel grey from the top body line up, with a blue and yellow pinstripe, but that would be mine. Ya, I'm a painter. Nice tire/ wheel choice. Sweet car. Shit man, you did a good job. I love the gauges. Tiger fur on the back dash eh. Be proud, good for you. Keep it. No matter what you do to that car, it will be paid for, cost less and be better than ANY new car. I work on new cars every day, and they are shit. Plastic parts held together with plastic retainers. They stopped making real cars in the mid 80's. Right about when the triangle vent windows were taken from our pick-ups.

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
      @HOUSEOFDULA  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Appreciate the compliment. Love the car. Cant wait to drop the all motor big inch block in it one day. Tiger fur??? god no lol, hopefully your kidding or you saw a bad camera angle / reflection. Back tray is board / vinyl wrapped. Temporary because eventually the back will be sealed off behind the seat. Couldn't agree with you more about new cars. The only thing good about new cars are the motors and their tech making reliable power but hell they are overpriced and built to be thrown away when done.

    Ya it be nice to have a classic mustang, but the rarity of this car is what makes it so special.
    We need I had my first 5.0, I'd alway thought to myself about having a grand a late 80S early 90 grand marquee or thundbird equipped with all the stuff you'd put on a Mustang.
    Every once in a while you'll see some like that. And they're always and eye catcher, that's what makes them so special.
    Them galaxies are some rare birds to, but not as much as the torino.
    Great car. Hadn't seen much on it as I was a late subsciber.
    Well done.

    That is an awesome car ! I love the no nonsense street car build, it reminds me of the late 70's, early 80's when I was running the streets with all my car buds. I would love more info on the rear set up. I have a 68 Torino GT convertible, 289 C4 I have had for 19 years. I am redoing the suspension now. Global West front suspension and stock rear springs with the Global West bushings and adjustable shocks on all 4 corners. Going for a driver the wife can enjoy as well. Again, Great car !!

My axle originally came out of a 1969 Mustang exact same length I just had to move the perches an inch or so. Since I mini tablet I had the axle made to a custom length from Moser, Then had my 31 spline axles cut to that length.

    Beautiful car and hats off to you for breathing new life into this car. This was my high school driver and dream car. I had a 1968 Torino GT (non fastback). It was black on black, 390 high performance, four speed, all from the factory. We were a poor family and I was a hustler actually working full time at a gas station after school. My Mom worked two jobs and I talked her into signing for this car at a used car lot. It was two years old and I believe we paid $1695 for it at the time. A lot of people were really jealous but they were all lazy people who had no idea of the meaning of working hard to get what you wanted. I loved that car and certainly would love to have that car back today.
    The best of luck with the Torino if you still have it.

I hope you get time soon to do that big block look forward to it

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
      @HOUSEOFDULA  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Yeah car was a very standard Torino, still rare though and car was pretty original...however when I bought it, muscle cars we're not the prices they are now, and this car was never anything special so I dindnt even think about keeping it original and went with the look I wanted. Plus, I was a bit younger too lol Car HAD power steering, and I took it out and converted it to manual. Its all OE 69 Torino manual stuff too, which was hard to find. I did this for simplicity in engine bay, and was tired of messing with the slave cylinder.

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
      @HOUSEOFDULA  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its a 302 right now. Im putting in a stroked 460. 500+ cubic inches. The car factory would have come with (as you know) a 302, 351, 390 or the 428. The 460 is a 385 series engine, so its just a longer stroke 429. Crites makes headers and engine mounts to put the 460 in a 69 body. Car like this deserves big cubes! ;) 390

    How did you managed to afford all the remodeling ???? Any tips for people aspiring to get their first build?

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
      @HOUSEOFDULA  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is actually a great question. At the time and age I was when I bought it I was a broke kid lol. The best thing I could say was years and years of slowly doing this and that. The initial build, engine and paint was done at the time the only way I could, that was pinching pennies, doing only what was necessary and did all the work myself...this was the only way I could afford to do it. I rebuilt the engine myself, but had the machine shop do the machine work, but used bare minimum parts...later down the road I added a new cam, headers, intake, heads, mini-tubbed it etc.. The paint I stopped in a local paint shop and bugged the owner with a million questions....until finally he agrees to shoot the black and clear. Sorry this is so long...Tips for first build. Stay whithin your means. Get a solid car, not rusted out. Stay whithin your limits (dont go out to reweld the entire car) BUT at the same time, its just a car, use it to learn, anyone can, dont be afread to tear into it, read, ask questions (like you did here). LAST advice. Take a step at a time, try not to focus on the car as a whole! This will make it seem overwhelming and ou'll loose interest. For instance, dedicate a summer to do nothing but say body work. Thats fine. Then day by day break it down. Say this weekend Im going to just remove the interior and bumpers. Next weekend Im just going to focus on the driver side fender. Just keep organized, meet other interensted in the same car and HAVE FUN! what its all about.

    Thats a badass ride i have a 68 Fairlane that i going the same route with calvert racing suspension but going tubular upper and lower control arms with coilover struts. But my question is is that a factory master cylinder. and is it a factory manual steering or did you use a different steering.

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
      @HOUSEOFDULA  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I converted to factory manual steering. It was a chore finding it. The master cylinder is from a 69 Mustang, meant for manual disc front, rear drums. Along with proportioning valve etc. The steering, I covered in the video but I had to cut it out, too much wind noise. It was converted from power, and I had to source all 68/69 torino manual parts. The steering box was a manual box from a 70 fairlane. In fact I scored an entire front steering setup from a 70 fairlane/Torino thinking it would work. The ONLY thing that worked was the steering box. The pitman arm, drag link, everything was different. I found a guy online that has a company that specializes in ford only steering...he had a 68/69 drag link and pitman that I traded for my 70 stuff. Then, I rebuilt it all with what I could. Its solid, especially for a drag car. With power steering, I had issues with the wide tires, slave cylinder and headers. The drop bracket to clear the slave cylinder from the headers actually pulled away from the car. For this car, simple is best! When I put the big block in, the coilovers to remove the strut towers would be a GOD SEND! What kit did you go with for the coil overs?

    • @joshoneal4104
      @joshoneal4104 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Dula I havent found any I really liked yet its pretty expensive for a coil over conversion. i was looking at some from chris alstons chassis works. But for the kit its like 2k. and thats isnt in my budget

    I have a 69 Fastback that I've owned since 1992. I really like your gauges. That's something I've been stuck on trying to fix. I wouldn't mind aftermarket, but I want to keep the overall look with the aluminum and black characters. After seeing yours I think digital is the way to go though. I have a video on TH-cam of mine too but I can't remember what the title is at the moment. If you see a indigo blue Fastback idling in the driveway with a dodge ram in the the background, that's me. Did you ever consider anything other than a 460? Too bad you wouldn't do a 351 Windsor or Cleveland base mod. Ford had a 351 cobra jet that was actually preferred over the big block because it handled way better in the turns and wasn't much behind the big block, if done right I know a smallblock can be just as good for pullin ya down the track, although I think the 351 motors are an intermediate block (f.e. ?)

    • @Johnnycdrums
      @Johnnycdrums ปีที่แล้ว

      The 69' Cobra (Fairlane) came with the FE 428 CJ or 428 SCJ and is a good deal lighter than the 385 block 429/460.
      Ford doesn't think of the 352/390/406/427/428 FE as big blocks because they started life as 332 ci.

    • @brianrichey7269
      @brianrichey7269 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually the FE line was Fords first big block line. My 68 formal top Torino runs 7.0’s with an all iron 472. Don’t have to treat it near as bad as a small block. I run a blown 302 in a fox. 6.60’s but it’s a lot harder on the engine. I’ve been running the 472 for 8 years. Haven’t pulled the pan, have to adjust the rockers every now and then.

    I have a serious question. I got my hands on a 1969 ford cobra. It’s a 2 door formal top. Isn’t the formal considered a fair lane and the fastback a Torino? Based off of my “research” Ford just marketed the 69 as just a “cobra”

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
      @HOUSEOFDULA  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      GOOD QUESTION. Regarding formal vs fastback, short answer is No. Ford had 3 models of the same body style (excluding Ranchero, and squire station wagon's). Fairlane and Torino. But also the Cobra, all available in sport or formal roof. Your correct, The cobra itself WAS the model and also based on he same body and 69 only (VIN's as a 1969 FORD COBRA). Although you could get a 428 CobraJet in a 68 model, it wasnt called a cobra. The Torino line was a more performance based, with slight changes in some trim and the base engine was a 289/302 (68/69), whereas the Fairlane was a base stripped model and base engine was an inline 6 200ci. ALL models we're available in fastback (sportsroof) or hardtop (formal roof) or convertible. (although Im not certain 69 had a cobra convertible available) The "GT" line was only available in the Torino line, not fairlane....The Fairlane had the 500 line, comparable to GT. To make things more confusing, a 428 Cobra was an available engine option in Fairlane, Torino, and was the base engine in a Cobra....Clear as mud? lol Fairlane and Torino we're the same car, but Torino was more sport oriented (even though you could get a Torino Squire Wagon) lol all with slightly different trim levels, badges, colors and carpeting. All available with a ton of engine options. Bench or Bucket seats. I look at it like from BASE to TOP tier orer you would have "Fairlane,Fairlane 500,Torino,Torino GT,Cobra" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Torino

  • @Enigma-Sapiens
    @Enigma-Sapiens ปีที่แล้ว

    Dula, that car looks like a 69' Fairlane. It doesn't have the fastback like my 69' Torino had. It looks just like my buddy's Fairlane though. Is it some kind of base or special model Torino?

    • @HOUSEOFDULA
