I am currently having a clone version of the 1932 deuce coupe car used in the American Graffiti movie built and can't wait to go cruising Route 66 this summer and roll into California with Jan and Dean's "Surf City" blasting outta my speakers! :)
Just my all-time favourite Surf song and splendidly remixed here. A song that Brian Wilson wasn't too fussed on finishing as he favoured Surfin' USA at the time. Reading Dean Torrance's recollections on making Surf City is interesting. Brian and Dean did all the 'falsetto' , Jan and Brian did the lead vocals and the vocals all got doubled up. The session men were Leon Russell keyboards, Glen Campbell lead guitar, Tommy Tedesco rhythm guitar, and two drummers, Hal Blaine and Earl Palmer. Brian was the master musician and Jan was the technician. What a lineup on one record. So loving this remix. Cheers and many thanks for the sheer quality.
I remember reading that Dean has stated that he either wasn't on this song at all, or was mixed way down into the background harmony. The wailing falsetto that is heard prominently on the song was said to be Tony Minichiello of The Matadors, while Brian Wilson sang the famous "2 girls for every boy" part and also sang along with the lead. So Dean probably isn't heard much on the song, if he's even heard at all. Although Dean did say that he was involved with the writing of the lyrics, although never officially given credit.
