Factual - You’re ignoring the portal altogether, which is driven by $ and is increasingly significant. Bro idc what anyone says, Michigan has the best defense in college football, the only reason it's not "Statistically" the best is because their offense is so bad
As a buckeye fan I agree with this statement, the Michigan defense is the real deal and they run a great scheme. If they had an offense they could have easily repeated as national champions. The big 10 is deep, easily the best conference.
Aside from Michigan’s defense, the difference was definitely the 1st quarter. I’ve always said if the vaunted SEC had to play in Midwest elements regularly, instead of warm weather constantly, it would make a huge difference. When that downpour happened, Michigan was in its element. Wind, rain, sleet, snow can all happen here within the same day and it has, on many occasions. That rain fell and Michigan had at least half a quarter to play football midwest-style. Gritty and tough hits different when you have to bare the elements and you revel in it. The weather gets downright nasty up here and we’re used to it.
Do we talk at all about Michigan, the Michigan culture being something special.....always about the other team and what they didn't do.....and yet the Michigan Culture again never talked about why we win, win against 20 pt underdog comments, half their starting team siting out going on to the draft, 4 first rounders, starting quarterback going down in the early 3rd quarter and yet the culture and staff and players find a way....when is it going to be about praising the culture built at Michigan...that should be the story....we hear about it with Alabama, Georgia, but yet we see Michigan do things for 4 years now they are not supposed to be able to do with the players they have....just saying

As a SEC person I was happy to see Alabama and South Carolina both lose to put the arguments to bed. Yes Boise State lost but we all know it's about the idea that seems like Boise State, SMU, Illinois etc have the opportunity now to play for a national championship knowing that more times than not they'll lose. But every once in awhile I'm sure one of them will break through
The crazy thing I’ve noticed is the SEC is no longer the most physical conference. They still have the best players roster vs roster, but something has happened with this NIL/Transfer era.. maybe when you drive a Lambo to practice in college.. that’s not a good thing.. shocker. The two best teams in the country are in the B10, the SEC had no one near the heisman, guys are transferring out of the south and winning national awards (Seth McLaughlin [since he can’t snap a football lol), the big programs in the north are now getting players they never would have from Florida/Texas/Alabama. Michigan and Illinois were more physically dominant than Alabama and South Carolina yesterday.. if ND wins today.. the south is dead
The NIL and transfer portal are making this possible. Everyone can be paid now, so no team can dominate because it costs too much. Those Big Ten teams are just as rich, if not richer, than those SEC teams, so paying guys through alumni networks is not an issue for any of them. Moving forward, there will be more parity for the top 40 or 50 teams because no one can afford to buy all the best players. That will benefit the Big Ten, ACC, and Big 12 compared to what has happened with the SEC dominating.
I respect the heck out of anybody who's willing to put their hands up and say, "Ok, I admit it, I was wrong." I know that's not exactly what he said, but I appreciate the sentiment from Paul here.
The committee got it RIGHT!!!. Only dispute would be why they allowed the worst power 4 conference to have THREE teams in. Next year stop advocating for your mediocre conference to have multi loss teams in.
I’m a Houstonian so I will NEVER like Bill O’Brien so I’m bias against his opinions. That being said when looking at Milroe’s body of work as QB was Bill O’Brien correct in stating he wasn’t a good QB and should switch positions!?! McElroy and Sean McDonough were two of the worst with dumb comments during the Indiana / Notre Dame game. They should get just as much heat as Finebaum!
everyone thought NIL was cool until they realize the alumni of Big10 schools is way more financially successful and now they have more resources to compete. you're seeing that change
The era of room temperature IQ quarterbacks with horrific mechanics, jumbled feet, wobbly off passes and a 4.3 40 is over. Timing, accuracy, big throws and reading defenses is back.
Indiana doesn't deserve any apology. They barely played any teams with a winning record. They never should have been in the playoff and they got destroyed as a result.
No Graham , Grant , Johnson , stewert , Paige , Loveland , Morris , edwards , Mullings , qb knocked out 1/2 though game and still won . 4 projected 1 st round picks sat out and still found a way
I will say this about Finebaum when I watched him this year he was quick to say he was wrong after something like an Alabama lost. I haven’t seen him double down or try to change the conversation to something else.
@ it’s impossible but he could have easily tried to downplay the lost by saying Alabama wasn’t interested. I’ve listened to other people double down on their dislike of Indiana getting a playoff bid so it’s been fun to watch these commentators get humble pie.
Michigan had 21 players leave the program or sit out of the game, including 4 probable 1st round picks, and several other Day 2 picks. Alabama played almost all of their starters. Michigan's young backups, beat Alabama's veteran 4 and 5 stars. Michigan has a walk on QB Davis Warren, who barely played in HS due to cancer. When he got hurt, they put in a QB who can't throw it accurately downfield.....yet they still won. Michigan dominated on the DL and held their own with a makeshift OL. The future is bright at Michigan. Top DL and Edge Rushers are going to want to go to Michigan, where they will "eat" well in Martindale's NFL Ravens type schemes.
Deboer is a very good coach but the expectations that Saban put on that program can't be duplicated. Bama can win another title but the domination that Saban had on college football are over.
All I know is that in their last two games Michigan held opponents who were collectively 5-touchdown favorites to 23 points and like, 350 yards of combined total offense and won both games with quarterback play that wouldn’t even befit a service academy. Sure would be nice to see Coach Moore (and DC Martindale) get some respect put on their names, not to mention the hard-working players down the depth chart that made those results happen on the field.
Non Michigan fans don’t realize that our defense was still elite this year. We just had no QB or WRs to speak of. A LOT of our defensive bench would be starters at most schools.
Finebaum is a joke, he's always saying how dominant the SEC is and the Entire conference is Clearly Overranked, should have waved that flag after Oklahoma curb stomped the Tide
Everyone deserves the right to watch the bowl games, not just people who can afford cable. Some years ago all of the bowl games were on network Tv, even the NC. ESPN is greedy and should be ashamed of themselves.
Alabama is a playoff team so is Michigan. Michigan just started slow but their defense is sick. Everyone acts like Michigan has no talent. They are the defending NC. They just smacked OSU. Losing to Michigan isn’t an embarrassment.
@ hmm Michigan beat teams in the CFP as did Alabama. Who did Boise, SMU, Arizona State, Indiana, or even PSU beat? Indiana best win is over Michigan at home. So in my opinion Michigan and Alabama both have better resumes than at least 5 teams in the playoff.
NIL/Portal saved college football. SEC teams like Bama/Georgia can’t stack teams with great players. Bama fans already turning on DeBoner is hilarious.
@Legendary_UA that's what he said & you believe that. Foolish man. Once again if he could've won a championship NIL would've bothered him 1 bit. They lost 2 or more games the past 4 seasons
Sometimes the schedule says more than the record. People keep talking about how terrible Michigan is simply because they have five losses. They were dominated by Texas and Oregon. They lost on the road to Illinois, who beat SC, and narrowly to Washington and Indiana. With their victory over Ohio St, they would have been in the playoff discussion if they could have won just two of the five games they lost. Anyone who looked at their schedule at the beginning of the year without realizing how well Indiana would do would be pressed to find 8 wins with the replacement of personnel and staff. I suppose it's just too much to ask for people to allow the entire scenario to play itself out before giving a FINAL analysis every single week and making fools of themselves. You're welcome Paul Finebaum.

Fr. Decimated roster and staff after the natty 😌. We’ll be back. This ain’t 2015 anymore, SEC finding out.
It doesn't feel right to watch any Finebaum interview wear he doesn't take a swing at Harbaugh, Michigan being over-rated, or bringing up sign stealing. Life was a lot better for Paul when Alabama could pay (under the table) the entire roster and Saban could whine about not being respected. Alabama's second & third string players were better than most anyone else's starters. Maybe Finebaum should start a movement for hiring Urban Meyer, just like every other program trying to hold on to past glory.
I vaguely remember when Bama was good. It was some time in the past.
Your biases get in the way of logic.
It was obvious that the SEC is full of average defenses and below average QBs.

Finebaum’s shame knows no bounds. Now that all teams can pay players above table, instead of bama (and a relatively small number of other teams’) bagmen paying under the table for years, balance is being restored.

Not really look at the top five recruiting teams for 2025. They’re all the same people as before NIL. Alabama still has all the five stars in the world on their squad. They just didn’t play as a team.
@ two obvious flaws, one logical the other factual. 1. Logical - recruiting - the gap is closing between haves/have nots. That’s the point. Of course same teams are at top - they had first-mover advantage bc of their already-existing cash/bagmen networks. 2. Factual - You’re ignoring the portal altogether, which is driven by $ and is increasingly significant. Instead of rolling dice on 17 year old 5 stars that pump rankings, grab a 20 year old proven commodity.

Somebody get Paul some salt and pepper to season that plate of crow he gotta eat!! Bama DIDNT deserve a CFP spot, neither did S.Carolina,,,😅
I thought the same thing.
Yeah, the Michigan players were having a blast while it was rainning. Wish it kept rainning. lol

I’m sure Saban and Herbstreit will wave the white flag as well and admit they were wrong.
This was college football in the 90's but I guess you are too young to remember that
The NIL and transfer portal are making this possible.
Yep, I remember 90's football. Nebraska is waking up.

I would agree but for the fact that he said they should be in the CFP. We knew Alabama wasn’t good before Michigan.
@miwolve1278 Also when they lost Kirby Smart
Michigan’s coaches and players never quit on themselves even when too many of our fans turned against them. Hail!
