  • BMW R1200 RS Test ride review.
    Me thrashing around on the back of a feisty Bavarian. What could possibly go wrong?...
    NB. Pinch of salt warnings:
    1. This bike has no DCT system. It's actually just a quick shifter "Shift Assist Pro" at an extra cost of €400. As such the bike DOESN'T actually weigh any more with this option. the only thing that is affected is the weight of your wallet!
    2. The 'Ring Of Distraction' is the control for the GPS. I found this out after returning the bike so no need to tell me! ;D

    Nice, pragmatic, amusing and helpful review. I terminated my Ducati ST2 a couple of years back and thought my motorcycling days were over but this one is calling me back. Can't wait to test ride one next week. Thanks and keep up the good work!

      I had to postpone my test ride four months ago as I was taken into hospital. I've had major cardiac surgery but this week, after a long and still continuing recovery, finally, took my test ride. Wow!! What a joy to be alive!!

      Thanks! Yeah that's embarrassing. Though more so that a BMW salesman told me that a DCT system was in there! 😂 Still, I'm the one left looking silly!

      +ThatBM Guy Thanks! And cheers for the sub. Hope i keep your attention despite the lack of BMW moving forward (for now, at least!) How you're enjoying yours though! I've still yet to plant myself atop a GS. Soon...

      its good pal thanks, I got a 2013, 10k miles one in mint con with panniers etc, works great just need to set up the shocks for my fat ass lol

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +ThatBM Guy Glad to hear it. Always seems the best way to buy! They come with all the toys at little extra cost then! I've got my shocks 'about right' but dare not mess any more! It's a dark art and in search of that extra 30% i could just as easily ruin everything! Good luck with yours though! 😉

  • @Fjdy1jd1
    @Fjdy1jd1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The boxer twin is smooth because it is the only twin configuration in which the piston/rod pairs counterbalance each other AND you have an evenly-spaced firing order.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Fjdy1jd1 And there you have it! The science which i sadly didn't have to include in the video! Surprising that nobody else tries it. Must be expensive to develop or manufacture perhaps? I was very pleasantly surprised i must say. Cheers!

    • @exothermal.sprocket

      And a very very very boring firing order. Same as 360º parallel twins.

    Was great to have a ride review pop up on my subs from you! Extra points for not immediately falling in love with it simply because it's a BMW. Also, did I hear you mistake the Versys for the Phaser or is there a new horse in the stable?

    About a month back I walked into a dealer to look at the GS Adventures, the F800 and the big boy too. You'll fit really well on those, you may want to try a 1200 GS for laughs, the ergos are more what you are used to.
    I've wanted a plain naked BMW twin for 30yrs, but they simply are too small. So I checked the R1200R and it was too small as expected, jumped on the RS and oddly (not being sport bike oriented) it was really calling me, but it is simply too small for me (37" inseam). Really nice quality finish about it. If they could arrange it with the roominess of a 1200 GS/Adventure, I'd be in.
    The Moto Guzzi big twins have that same torque shift to them when you rev them too, they pull to one side.You might find the Stelvio an interesting ride in the massive mile eater category.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Chris Esser I'm desperate to hit the Stelvio Pass. I was supposed to have done it already! I really like the look and the roominess of the GS's. I just haven't even entertained the thought as the costs are simply to unreachable! Maybe a higher seat and some bar risers could go some way to make an R1200 fit. If i had the cash, I'd certainly be considering it! Guzzi would be nice to but i have this strange phobia of Italian electrics!

    Top spec has cruise control and the twiddly wheel on the left is for the satnav.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I figured that out eventually! Bit annoyingly placed for my tastes! Cruise control is always a nice touch!

  • @DirkMatschuk
    @DirkMatschuk 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You should have tried an RS with bar risers. I had the same pain in tha ar..., äääh, back. But the Voit bar risers (30 mm up, 21 mm back) made the seating position perfect!!!

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did! The R1200R! ;D But they had to swap the plastics to afford the risers! I loved the R1200R, so I can fully imagine that it would be awesome!

    Just to point out, this bike has an adjustable seat which goes as low as 760mm which for short legged angry dwarves like me is bloody brilliant!!!

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Turbotez ! The dude in the garage told me it wasn't adjustable but you could specify a different height (at a cost). Of course this is all in a foreign language so maybe he was telling me about his toast collection. Who knows!

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Becker Inal Thanks Becker. Yeah I found it very much the same. Lovely bike, but too uncomfortable. Now if I could put flat, wide bars on this bike, maybe raise the seat 20mm and move the pegs down a smidge, we might well be looking at my perfect bike!

    Great video, entertaining as usual!
    Comparing this bike to the Versys1000 that you test-drove earlier, how would you compare it in terms of performance/comfort? Can you even compare both motorcycles?

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Ghyslain Brazeau Thanks G. I think they have much in common. Both great engines and comfy. The BMW felt more pokey but the Versys seemed more flickable and lively. Comfort wise, the versys was much more relaxed and more my style with higher and wider bars. BMW had the better seat as it didn't slant forward. Also the screen on the Versys was much worse than the BMW's. Finally of the 2 the Versys has by far the smoothest engine. And don't forget the Versys is €5000 cheaper!! :D

    The R1200r is a peach. I test rode one and loved it. A little bit of ground clearance issues as it is easy for the pegs to touch down. Apart from that and the price it is wonderful.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +theloudbloke I guess i probably should have read the brochure when i was waiting for the guy to bring the bike around, but i was too excited! I think there was some misinformation from the salesman too. I'm sure he said double clutch and i ran with it! He also told me the keyless start was €400 when it's actually advertised as €260 in the brochure. No idea where i got 1500 for the quickshift from though. That's only €400 odd extra. Bargain!

      +Andy Man Cam No worries, I'm looking for a 1200RT at the moment, so self-confessed BM nut. I have another question which I hope you can give an answer to... Does the Sony Action Cam give the possibility to 'mark' the video, to make it easier to find a piece of film when you vlog or do you have to search through it all at editing? Does that make sense?

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +theloudbloke Yes and no. It has a loop feature which eventually overwrites the SD card once it's full, and you can 'hard save' a clip by stopping recording. So when something happens you stop recording and it saves the last 5/10/15 minutes depending on your setting. But you also then lose everything else when the card fills up. A top tip i got ages ago was to simply cover the lens with your hand for 5-10 seconds when something happens. That way you can wizz through the footage and stop when the screen goes black. Sometimes lo-tech is the best tech!

    OK. I know you are a 6.4 monster.. But we are seriously thinking of swapping the Versys for one of these. I am 5.10 and Blonde is 5.4 we are finding the versys too tall. I honestly can't think of another sporty bike that does 2 up as well as this looks like it does. what do you recon. Swap or stay with Versys. ??

      +A Brit A Blonde A Bike That's a toughie mate. Though no denying that the BMW is a bit smaller and lighter. Plus the motor is sublime so performance wise I think you'll be satisfied. Only had off-road bikes and scooters. Is there anything other than the difficulty in balance that would deter someone from getting this as a first street bike? Not keen on dropping it with the engine sticking it out :) How tall are you ? This layout seems totally loaded. I don't like the keyless thing... I have enough wireless pollution in my life I like to get away from it when I can... don't want to be trapped on a bike with bluetooth and wireless emitters unless it only sends signals at certain points.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Carmelo Santini To be completely fair to the bike, it was beautifully balanced and felt very light. The side movement was very small and you can very quickly get used to it. The potruding cylinder heads would definitey be a concern area for me as a seasoned rider so more so as a new rider. Engine bars would be a necessity otherwise even the smallest off could prove very costly indeed! I think you can opt to go without all the wireless trickery. On cost grounds alone i personally would take this bike in its most basic form. Apparently it is still a quite fantastic machine even without all the toys.

    WD-40 is what's needed on that screens joints, the ring at the bar bla bla bla you know. BMW's do seem v v nice but the mechanic I go to says they breakdown a helluva lot. Is it direct?
    It seems like it's quite smooth to ride considering it's torquey.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +sixmiffedy It was quite direct actually. But yes, very smooth as long you're smooth on the throttle. I had a few jerky moments from just wacking it open/shut. It's easy to get used to though and a real pleasure to ride after that.

    Loved the video and review, Andy! That ring on the left handlebar (that seemed to do nothing) is to adjust stuff on the digital display.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sunfrancks Thanks! I can understand the concern. I've heard a few shockers too. But tbh I've heard far more tails of woe (and cost) surrounding chains! I think for every destroyed shaft there's been a 1000 knackered chains!

    How can you "review" a bike when you know so little about it? You don't even appear to know what half the controls do!

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's a first look/first ride kind of affair. I get a very short time with the bike and in my opinion the most important thing is just the impression of riding the bike. If the controls aren't easy to operate with little or no instruction then the designers have dropped the ball, in my opinion. Plus I ride the bikes for myself, and I am in no position to have any of the extra bells and whistles so I'd rather not waste any time on them!

    So does it have a dual clutch transmission and a quick shifter or just the dual clutch transmission?

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Quagmire88 As far as i know this one just had the DCT. So downshifts still weren't super smooth as there was no throttle blippage going on. Come to think of it, downshifts without clutch even with DCT are probably unrecommended!

    • @turbo311
      @turbo311 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Andy Man Cam there's no dual clutch transmission. BMW doesn't make one, but Honda does. It's Shift Asssist Pro, if fitted, allows for clutchless up and down shifts within certain gears and rpm ranges.

    • @graantmnz
      @graantmnz หลายเดือนก่อน

      it is NOT DCT - it just has a quick shifter - but you only use it from 2nd or 3rd up ....use the clutch ( also very light and smooth ) to change 1/2 or even to 3rd and no problems.
