  • From www.crosstrainingenduro.com Tall rider bike setup and also body positioning and riding tips if you are too tall for your enduro bike, aventure bike or dual sport bike. The big problem with dirt bikes is the cockpit is designed to fit the average person. Too short, you can't touch the ground. Too tall, and you have to squeeze yourself onto the bike. So tall riders get into bar risers, high bend bars, raised seats, lower footpegs, roll the handlebars forward, or get high bend bars, Steg Pegz,

    When standing in the correct default body position, the tall enduro rider is crouched lower than the average rider which will be more tiring. This also puts his body weight to the rear more, which can affect the centre of gravity. When the tall rider is forced to sit more to the rear, this ain't what you want dude - cramped and feet are very vulnerable. And this cramped position makes the sitting/standing transition very tiring, a tough situation when good enduro technique requires both constantly.
    So the tall rider wants to do all sorts of enduro bike mods and the setup should make the cockpit larger. Mount the bars forward. I have used the Rox pivoting risers very successfully as these push the bars forward, and up as well. Remember though, too far forward and your handling is affected. Bar risers and high bend bars? Some love them, some hate risers, we've done a vid about risers.
    Move your footpegs lower and further back. The Fastway footpegs from Promotobillet are the most popular ones and several of our guys use them. Some claim they change the centre of gravity too much or hit in ruts sooner, we haven't found any issues yet and love them. Consider getting some larger footpegs too.
    A higher seat is good for many tall riders. You aren't as cramped in the sitting position, and the sitting/standing transition is easier too. Strap a cushion on your bike first and see if you think it's worth buying a tall seat or not. Some tall riders say a tall seat makes it easier to grip the bike with their knees too.
    Steg Pegz. Not everyone likes these but I love them. Tall riders are pushed backward and forwards on the bike more, and these take all the strain off your upper body. Watch this video link for more info. If you have big feet, it might be worth getting a longer gear shift lever so you aren't changing gear by mistake.
    Some guys suggest increasing your wheelbase by messing around with your chain length and sprockets to move the rear wheel back as far as possible. I don't know if this helps, but figure it's worth mentioning.
    Top riders are super fit and even very tall riders like David Knight leave their bikes completely stock in terms of bars, seat and footpegs. In fact I've heard stories of him telling other riders to get that shit off their bike! However, I think the majority of us are much happier to have some comfort on the bike and possibly sacrifice a bit of performance our gumby skills can't reach anyway.
    So what can tall rider do other than bike setup? Try changing your riding style. Grip the bike more with your legs. In our coaching, Birchy said to focus on your lower legs. Point your toes in and try gripping with the bike with your ankles. If you do fit a taller seat, you may find you can grip the bike with your knees instead. Body positioning. Generally you'll be less cramped when standing. And most of us sit far more than we should when dirt riding. See our vid here about body positioning. There are actually three different positions for your boots on the footpegs. The more you ride on the balls of your feet, the more room you will have on the bike. See our video about foot positioning.
    BIKE CHOICE FOR TALLER RIDERS
    There are long debates about this. Personally I haven't found any dirt bike that feels more comfortable. They all feel far too small until i do all my frankenstein mods to them. All I can suggest is ride different bikes to see if any of them feel better.
    So good luck all you tall freaks of nature. Ride tall!

      I'm only 12 and I'm 5'6 riding a Honda CRF150R big wheel. with bar risers. I'm still too tall. Lol, I'm getting a KTM or Honda 250 soon tho so no need to worry. yet.

      Triple, I have 2004 250X and a 2014 250W and they're both great bikes. You really can't go wrong with either one. They're different, the W doesn't quite have as much low end torque but it's very fun if you like to rev it a little. The W also feels lighter on the move even though they're fairly close in weight. The X has better torque and feels a little more stable. These of course are just the opinion of an over the hill Pokey (not even up to Gumby standards yet-just the side kick).

    Just shy of 6'2" here (187 cm for the rest of the world) so not a freak but my KLX250 flt like a 3/4 size bike when I got it. Since then I've had the footpegs re-welded further back, raised the handlebars with RoxRisers, reshaped the seat (not higher, just flatter) and the biggie: had 1 inch added to the swingarm. Now it fits.

    Thanks for the Steg pegs tip! On my KLR I ride standing on the passenger pegs. I have high bars and 2" Rox risers too. When sitting, my toes are pointed down so I adjust the levers down as far as I can, yet remain above the skid plate bottom keeping it the lowest point. Otherwise I have to point my toes outward keeping them away from the levers.
    Now that I'm building a new KTM 690 Enduro R, I'm going with the Clake 2 bar mounted rear brake eliminating the laver. Installing MotoBau Beartrap lowering pegs, 4" high bars with a Scotts BRE isolator a tall seat (not sure which one to go with. Ideas?) and have 1" risers available if needed. Like you, I want to be comfortable sitting for 100's of miles and have an energy saving standing position when off road. I'm good with compromising a bit of handling for comfort!

  • @TractioneRag

    Another quick note on tall setup. @eyalcr500 mentioned that if you are tall you are generally heavier than most. Not because you are fat, you are simply a larger human. Don't make the mistake of buying a tall soft seat, buy a tall HARD seat. When sitting, the soft foam compresses and you lose all advantage gained by having a tall seat. The tall hard certainly makes sitting standing transitions easier. The other comment would be NEVER to stand up using the muscles in your legs. Have patience and wait for a trail feature to either kick you up using the shock or the trail drops away and you can straighten your legs without effort. After a while, these features become readily apparent and you can conserve a lot of energy if you're tall...

      excellent points, especially given the dodgy source lol. at some point i'll redo the vid about conserving energy when riding, i'm keen to work in that point about using features in the trail to kick you up into the standing position.

    Coming from a Honda Hornet I feel like my dual sport has plenty of room.. so far... Though I found out the hard way, that clenching the bike with my feet while standing will put my leg into the exhaust pipe, which probably won't be much of a problem once I get proper boots and pants.. and a heat shield.. hurt and burn, live and learn.. :D

    At 6'2" I found my 450x to tall. The rr250 a bit cramped. But for racing I like the lower seat hight as I feel I can move around more. Especially on steep drop offs/hils. The foot pegs would be something to consider for sure.

    But i think there is more pros than cons of being tall in the woods :P

    GOOD GOOD points ! im not super tall ( 6'2 " ) but i still struggle with getting the right posture and style. the key things i've done was get my hammer head shifter for a size 12 1/2 which just extends the shifter about 5 mm longer than stock.
    adjusted levers to help encourage me to hold on to the bars with my elbows UP!!!! Lastly i Rotated my renthal bars forward enough to where it i feel like i freed up space between my chest and bars and now my arms feel nice and open.
    Next is seat. i want to make my bike feel as narrow as possible.
    Wish me luck ! i'll do some reviews of it when its done.

    I wanted this on a separate comment so please bear with me. I enjoy the way you produce your videos that while you're both speaking and playing back ground music, you can still hear the beautiful music of the bikes' engines. As you know, far too many videos drown out this sound entirely and I really think it takes away some (or most) of the essence of what those riders are trying to express. As far as the music goes, it's not something I would listen to on my own but I'm quite happy to listen to it during your videos. I now associate this style of music with your videos and it seems like 'home'. Thanks.

    I’m 6ft2 and at the time was 85kg 6% body fat ex world championship mx2 rider from 2010-2012 rode Suzuki which wasn’t ideal for my size and bike was 38hp slug then Honda next year was a bit small for me and underpowered and last year was on a ktm was much better size wise and power used a raised seat abs found that a bit helpful but was way to soft issue always was my boots catching on my tank shrouds out of corner and dragging my leg out corners. always found it better to run stock set up if you’re a faster rider just get set of renthal 604 fat bars and I always used knee pads over knee braces cause my knees took a lot of brunt from being longer . Being tall helped me be a great sand rider but changed my style that affected my hard pack speed all round . Being tall as a pro is a disadvantage especially weight wise

    im not the 6'4" (192 cm) freak some of you are but at 6 foot (182 cm) with a 32 (81cm) inch inseem dirt bikes are still cramped. the fast way pegs helped with my over sized feet by lowering and moving back the the peg as much as it helped give some more room in tbe cock pit.
    i tried a tall sest and found it didnt allow me to get low enough when "riding the tank" in corners. at least switching back and forth i preferred the base seat. also o found my self sotting more do to comfort. the ktms have 2 positions and you can turn the mounts to make 2 more. the miunts are offset on the pumkins. im in position 3 which is forward with the mounts facing back. my 6'4" goon of a friend is all the way forward number 4 and just recently discovered the fast way pegs. helped a lot. we both run taller bend bars. we've both also found that bar risers snd tall seats hibder us racing and even just hooning the trails.
    as for running the wheel as far back with sprocket and chain. addi g wheel base will make the bike less agile and harder to turn. it will increase stability at speed and make slight difference in wheel lift on climbs and decent. the linger the wheel base the more you sacrifice traction. 2 inches 5 cm is noticable. I strive to have my bije as short as possible

    Thank you so much for this video! I'm as vertically fat as you are and have the same problems. After a long search I found a higher seat and it made the bike handle totally different. Best money I ever spend! My biggest problem was and still is the rear brake. When set up for use when standing, it was almost impossible to reach the pedal when sitting, due to my cramped position. Did you encounter this issue? The higher seat helped out, but it's still a bit of a hassle to reach the rear brake. Maybe I'm just lazy.

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      definitely a problem to operate the rear brake when sitting, unless i'm almost sitting on the rear fender. in birchy's coaching, he said to brake while standing and only sit at the last possible moment as you enter the corner.... assuming its a tight corner of course, otherwise he keeps standing.

      @@crosstrainingenduro not sure if its much taller than the KDX, but the geometry was much better for taller riders.
      More space between the pegs and seat, taller handlebars, the width of the bike was also really nice, easy to clamp it with your knees.

    I have to be honest, and I don't know how or why but my essentially stock 2016 300RR beta (in terms of ergonomics) feels much more roomy than the 2016 husqvarna TE 300, I'm forunate enough to have the ability to ride both of them back to back and my knees just feel more in my face on the husqvarna. I've done no measuring of distances on ether bike but I know the TE 300 feels much more cramped when I get on it. (I'm 6'3") The funny thing is, I'm pretty sure on paper the beta has a smaller cockpit or triangle.

    • @lassivaatamoinen5468

      I think this is key. I'm only slightly over average height (6' 2", but biased with longer legs). Husky FE 350 (or the previous 'Berg) felt much more roomy to me than Beta RR 350. I think this was mostly due to handlebar height/positioning. Somehow it felt that the handlebars on Beta were quite high and pushed into my lap and I was riding way over the bar all the time. And very cramped. Same thing with Sherco.
      Not that Husky was perfect either, stock setup handlebar height is way too low for any support to lean on. Once the bar was pushed to 2nd forward position and raising the bar by 1cm I feel way more comfortable.

I can adjust the bars and shave the seat ect. but my goal is getting her feet on the ground with out destroying the quality of the suspension. How low is to low? How do i make sure the front and rear are dropped evenly? She can ride the bike but it's to tall for her to kick start on her own and there is pretty much no foot dabbing or walking the bike over tuff terrain.

      i think you'd need to talk to a decent suspension specialist, kevin.

    I feel attacked to see our risers feature here hahah, they are so tall for rally use so you can fit a scotts damper underneath. Im a strong advocate for not fitting risers where possible. This video is so useful to send to others

    Good video, my only suggestion might be to quantify what too tall or too long (boot size you perverts) is. I'm 57 and 6' and on my Honda 250X, I put in bar risers and feel they help me quite a bit, my boot size is 12 and I've felt I could use a longer shift lever, especially now that I'm trying to stand up more. I don't feel the need to move my foot pegs but perhaps that would be wise. I also have a Katy Em 250W without any modifications and I have a hard time standing on hill climbs because the bars are back (I just found out I can move them forward-I'm dense I know) and climbing while standing puts me in a very awkward position; so I find I don't stand as much and I'm much more sore the next day in the shoulders and thighs.So, the point to my rambling is... at what height do YOU think you should start adjusting this stuff? Also, what size boot do you think would benefit a longer shift/brake lever? Is 12 (46 Euro I think) large enough to start thinking about this?

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      i didn't include any suggestions regarding height for two reasons... first was that as you know most top riders say you shouldn't need these mods. and some tall guys so seem quite happy with a stock bike, while others like me complain endlessly and ache all over after trying to ride without these mods.
      the second factor is it's about more than just height. just some guys have a long torso but short legs. or the other way around. or a second head lol. so i figure it just comes down to a personal decision on whether you feel you need any, or all, of these mods. ditto on boot size, it would be up to the individual. i've never changed my lever but then i am a tight arse with money. :)

    • @fredman1085
      @fredman1085 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the response Barry. I remember the video where it was said to leave the bike setup more or less stock but I tend to agree with you that as we age and probably won't be swapping bikes for any reasons besides personal, that it behooves us to set up our bikes to make them as comfortable and efficient as possible to us individually. You might as well argue to leave the suspension stock so you can jump from bike to bike and not have to worry about customized suspension setup. Have I gone too far?

    Great vid like always!!!!
    Why no one is just bulding a bigger bike for taller guys? I still not understand it. Since years I'm screaming it out of my window.
    There exists 1Million different bikes to choose from and all are too small. Can no one just make ONE bike for taller guys?
    Please BETA or KTM (or anyone else)...just make a 300EXC XL or a RR300 XL. I even would buy a Harley Davidsion dirtbike if they would make it XL :)
    For what we need to choose between 250/390/430/480? All of the same dimensions!?
    I can live with 5 or... hell even 10PS less if the bike would just fit.

      Thx for the reply! I oversaw that in the video. Just watched a installation video for the 2Tall Racing Spacer Kits.
      But if I understand it correct it not really changes the frame size. It lifts up the handlebar and the seat&tank up and to the back?

    • @TractioneRag
      @TractioneRag 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ahh, you are totally right. It "fakes" a larger frame. I have heard nothing but good things but with their limited choice of bikes KTM and some Husky, it's tough to get in a position to try a kit.

    6'10'' (208cm) here with 40in inseam, when you done laughing, any advice what bike to look at? I owned 2009 ktm 690 enduro for a year or so. Siting on the back I rode it without any tall mods, been cramped a bit, couldn't drive it longer than 2hrs because of my knees starting to kill me, but that's the life we live. Now I want to get back and have some fun in trails without braking the bank. Want a lighter bike, thinking of 07-13 made 250-300 2 stroke. I know no bike will be right size, but maybe some of you tried more than I did , and can give me some starting point? Any advice appreciated I'm still new to bikes and that ktm was my first and only bike

      What did you end up going with out of curiosity? Are you still riding today? (5 years after your comment)
      From a physics standpoint, at that height I would really look into the tall hard seat and longer swingarm if possible. Someone's on comments above said they lengthened it, maybe something a good welder could do?
      Make sure to get proper springs on the bike for rider weight too.
      I have 36" inseam and always feel like my knees and feet are in the way... I sympathize with your pain at 40" inseam!

      Igor Vincic I have long legs and on a smaller bike I found the Rox 2" risers and a very straight bend bar helped solve this. I used the Pro Taper Factory Suzuki / KTM bend. It's 3.63" rise and only 1.85" pullback. I believe it is the straightest bar they make. Kept the ends of the bars away from my legs and knees.

Street bikes are much heavier than me (I weigh 115 lbs) and is way more costly if I accidentally drop the bike in comparison to a dirt bike. Hence why I bought the little thing lol. Though I ride a grom, I actually have a very tall dirt bike... it's a KTM 250 XC-F 🙈
      My friends think I'm fucking insane for having it hahaha
      But I love it and I can handle it☺️
