I think Shield Hero burned all its fuel so quickly because the narrative sort of drove itself into a wall. Do not underestimate this element in story writing - the villain is just as important to the plot as the MC, if not more. The villain that everyone focused on wasn’t the waves, it was Bitch. And yes, Bitch is an engaging villain but she is not actually the main villain the narrative is trying to steer towards. Nobody really cared about the stopping Armageddon from happening. They just want to see Bitch getting her ass handed to her and the other heroes getting owned by Naofumi. Once Bitch was sort of quelled in S1, I didn’t care about the waves really. Yeah in S3, Bitch is scheming again but look, she should not have been the main hook of the story. The real hook of the story should have been the waves, and I don’t care about the waves.
Which is why Kyo as a main antagonist in the second season was... Meh. There wasn't anything personal going between him and Naofumi and because of that no one actually cared about season 2.
From what I understand of the series, the storyline was never about revenge it was about redemption. All of the other heroes get redemption arcs, though I'm not entirely sure the quality of each one. I feel like people thought Shield Hero was going to be one thing and got something else. It's easy for me as someone who prefers redemption arcs to revenge plotlines to say the people who don't like Shield Hero just don't get it but that would be unfair. I have yet to watch season 3, so I'll withhold my judgement of people's reception to it until I do.
People of the internet likes to bitch about the Bitch. But I love Malty Melromarc, Myne, Bitch, Witch, Goddess of Love and Hate getting her comeuppance! Infact I think shes one of driving force of the story, show and social media. The web novel of Shield Hero shows how different Naofumi, the queen are and more storyline Bitch has. I enjoyed that. I personally love the villainess being evil and getting more screen time than anything else in the show now! Regardless they need to develop every characters motivation and depth even more to make it more immersive. As anime gets more seasons, the main fandom matures and unconciously requires more depth.
I think Malty's character can be likened to those villain personas of pro wresting who know how to make the audience hate them. And because of that they make those "hero" wrestlers more likable in comparison, which is why I appreciate her, because without her terribleness the story wouldn't have had that drama in Season 1.
Shield hero had interesting premise but turn into kinda generic isekai that I only watch because it has best waifu but I don't remember pretty much anything else beside could of early episodes. Now I watch through season 2 from awful to meh-okay and season 3 actually feels kinda nice. But also has season 2 issues but at least it has couple of episode that are really good. And one dragon fight that probably took all the budget because it looks 10 times better than the rest. Yeah and Kirito is also finally a character. 10/10 would still watch for Raphtalia.

Yeah it is a shame to see the linear storyline become empty and lack of substance and character dynamics and developments just fade away. No new kingdom faction, no third parties, and no new situation utilized correctly and the plot just runs into a corner. As for a request what do you think of analyzing either one of these two intentionally overpowered characters who have all the power in the world but have no intention of actually leading or ruling. Just using it to protect their families or use it to preserve their ordinary common lifestyle. Wang Ling from Daily Life of the Immortal King and Anos Voldigoad from Misfit at Demon Academy? Wang Ling is my personal favorite.
@@Velkuro I understand thank you for answering. Wang Ling is a pretty cool character to study in Season 1. He is pretty laid back and stolic not really having much emotions other then thinking how to keep his secret about his overwhelming pure power from being found out. He has been self aware since he was a newborn baby. His mom and dad are aware of his exordinary powers during his childhood and they are caring parents who do their best to provide for him a normal life as they can as his overwhelming powers has made interacting with other kids during his youth it created awkward situations where he couldn't really socialize with many people. In time of the show he is a teenager entering highschool and he ends up making close friends and eventually having a relationship with a rich girl his age who slowly becomes more attached and connect with compassionately him. Developing romantic kinship with him. Season 1 Wang Ling is preferably my favorite arc of him where his personality goes from stolic to a bit more lively.
Honestly, I think season 3 did pretty well considering how the situation was after seasin 1 and 2. There were quite a few changes and cuts in seasons 1 and 2 that impacted the anime, and I think they managed to at least show that the series can still be good. I also saw some people saying that season 3 became bad after the tournament arc, but I enjoyed those episodes rebuilding the village
But it downgraded a lot compare to the manga and the light novel. Example like in the manga/light novel when the village was being attacked, Keel and those kids in the village fend off the attackers themselves and won - which make it more meaningful and less cheap than what was actually happened in the anime. In manga/livht novel, Keel have moments to shine while in the anime, she don't have any screen time 😂😂
the main problem with season 2 and 3 was that they tried to cram in 4 to 5 volumes of the light novel in 12 episodes each season. the result was just rushed and unsatisfying seasons. they literally skipped rishia's and eclair's whole development, eclair literally showed up out of nowhere in season 2. And like you said in the anime the other heroes are just idiots with no development at all, when in the light novels they actually get their own arc. shield hero is good if you stick to the light novel and manga, cuz the anime honestly sucks after season 1.

@@Velkuro No you said that the anime "could have had their own arcs that explored their motives and struggles" which yes season 2 didn't but season 3 did, aside from the spear hero, the sword and bow hero had episodes dedicated to them to their struggles after the loss they face against the spirit tortoise, Ren having the most development. Ren lost his party due to his negligence, his over confidence and from the fact he saw this world as a game, but reality hit him hard over the course of the series, also your argumentation needs some work, you made quite the amount of claims when speaking about characters and story but not a whole lot of examples given to help elevate your points, like when you spoke about the change in naofumi's character you said "Naofumi when from being this complex morally gray character to some goodie-tushos hero I can find in any other Iseki, it's like they took away all the edge that made him cool and fun in the first place." that's your critique? Really, you mention substance before, but I don't think you embodied that meaning in your video, why do you see that Naofumi's character had gone under these changes. why not have given some comparisons between seasons 1 and 2 helping prove your case, not only that try and make your argument reasonable as to why the change from his early personality is worse. why is it worse, is it because it contradicts his values, his morals, was the change inconsistent with what we've know from his character before, did the story structure flow through making the swap in character make sense, what actions took place before the change, was it just like a flip of a switch, see these are points your video lacks, and any really nuance in its criticism. You speak about what you dislike as though its fact but provide little evidence, making arguments of a feeling rather than that of logical consistency. Going back to the Narrative and world building argument why didn't you go into greater detail explaining your reasoning about the issues with the world building or lack thereof, you mention how the shows world was "vibrant and exciting as a fireworks display" but then i guess it stopped feeling that way, why didn't you expand on that thought, what you said was the equivalent to say "that it was good and not it's not....okay moving on", also your comment that I'm responding too right now said. "The series did get worse. And I never said he didn't have character development I said that the development wasn't good." why is it bad character development, why wasn't that in your video, if you have so much to talk about when it comes to the show you once liked than why structure in a way that leaves so much context and information out of the finished product? I agree that season 2 wasn't good, there were quite of bit of plot issues related with season 2s addition, for now I won't go over them because I myself am wanting to make videos for TH-cam one of which is for "The Rising of the Shield", but I would have imagine that season 3 would have help you with a lot of the problems you were having during your video when it came to character focused arcs, growth, and world building. I hope you don't take offence to my criticizing of your work; I just believe if you going to critique something try and make it as concise, well researched, informative, structurally sound as possible.
And I never said he didn't have character development I said that the development wasn't good."
why is it bad character development, why wasn't that in your video, if you have so much to talk about when it comes to the show you once liked than why structure in a way that leaves so much context and information out of the finished product? I agree that season 2 wasn't good, there were quite of bit of plot issues related with season 2s addition, for now I won't go over them because I myself am wanting to make videos for TH-cam one of which is for "The Rising of the Shield", but I would have imagine that season 3 would have help you with a lot of the problems you were having during your video when it came to character focused arcs, growth, and world building. I hope you don't take offence to my criticizing of your work; I just believe if you going to critique something try and make it as concise, well researched, informative, structurally sound as possible. Have a good day.
😊

@@Velkuro hey no worries, I felt like I was coming off a little strong in the beginning of my comment so I tries to mellow down throughout the critique, I'm technically new to this too, I've only just now been writing my scripts for reviews, i have a hand full just need to redraft and then start editing, if you'd like my assistance with anything or to talk about anime in general I'm cool with that, I love talking about media, the writing and meeting new people so if you ever feel like it hit me up~☺❤
Definetly will and thanx again. cant wait to see your videos too@@HeadlessOtaku

The author said, dark fantasy was the meta at that time when you want to write Web Novel.
So he need to think a plot where the revenge doesn't end easily.
