Hey. I like your voice. I like the peace you exude. I like that you are teaching how to think about what one is experiencing without rejection of it, learning to live harmoniously with it. Our best survival tool is our mind and how we choose to adapt to our surroundings rather than trying to dominate it. Of course we also want tools but how we think about things is first. You really demonstrate that. You got a new fan. Thanks.
this is the first time i have seen your video. i watched the whole video and i already love you. your philosophy is just perfect. i love you man. keep going. love from Bulgaria
I grew up in Minnesota and every summer I would get several scabs on my arms and legs from scratching mosquito bites. Then I spent a couple of years in Puerto Rico as a missionary, and the mosquitoes were even worse there. I remember sitting in a room with a swiveling fan: when it blew on my right side, the skeeters all flew to my left. When the fan blew on my left, they all flew to my right. After a while, I stopped scratching bites, and the bites I got one day would fade away by the next morning - to be replaced by fresh ones, to be sure, but after a while I had to just accept mosquito bites as a constant, along with sweat. Biting bugs are like other discomfort - heat and cold: a big part of dealing with them is mental. For soap, I can recommend unscented Castile soaps. I like Kirk's and Kiss My Face.
Possible high-summer solution: cover your whole body in thin, loose white material to repel the heat as well as protect you from bugs. If the material's tight on your skin, then maybe the bugs could bite through it, but if it's quite loose and baggy, they're less likely to be able to reach the skin, yes? Only problem is the possibility (near-certainty if you're bushwhacking) of tearing your clothes.
If being relaxed deters bug bites you are the safest person i know. You didn't mention diet. I've heard eating bananas helps us emit an odor to mosquitos. It makes sense since God put banana trees in tropic areas where mosquitoes thrive. Beauty berry applied to the skin helps too. I'm thankful for the Scriptures you put at the end of your vids to tie it all together. Your videos are great, relaxing therapy. Thank you.
Yeah, those techniques only apply to areas where bananas and beauty berries are native to the land which is only .001% of where mosquitoes are prevalent. What do you do if you go off grid in the northwest territory of Canada? Now you're on your own. The idea is to find a natural mosquito repellent or strategy that could be applied in a large majority of where mosquitoes are found.
I have found that eating garlic is a good repellent. Odorless garlic tablets have the same effect. This has helped me alot. Also wearing light weight loose clothing to cover your skin. Lots of options now days in this area. Go with God.
I've always wondered in a survival scenario if you didn't have fire, or long shirts or anything would it work to thickly cake mud on your skin? In one sense it might attract them a bit because they like mud don't they? But it also might be too thick for them to bite through I think. Anyway, I'd like to see it tried, I can't find anyone who has.
Thank you. The woods does that to me & I forget I'm chilled. It's good therapy for me. I recommend that others try it. Get away from the busy or stressful life. Get some woods time.
Thank you. This video was filmed in New Hampshire, US on the border of Maine. We have hills and mountains and between those many ponds and swamps with clouds of mosquitoes down there in season.
i’m from toledo and we got mosquitos bad, pretty often i can go out and if i don’t have spray i can easily have 10-15 on me instantly from my legs to my face. when i was younger they would itch for days, but now (and why im at the video cause i got tore up today) my bites are gone within a hour or 2 (looking for my friends who want to hike but are soft). i will say though i wanna try to get a net cause im a mouth breather lol
I have always felt that there could be some things passed down through my genetics that seem to make the wilderness feel very comforting to me. Much more than the other folks that Ive spent time with in the wilderness and like you, the mosquitoes dont usually flock to me as much as some others. Your the first one that Ive heard to consider that our ways in nature could possibly be connected with our ancestors. It makes since though, like good Dogs. The small swamps of White Water Creek and Ginger Cake Creek of Fayette Co. Ga have been my teacher of appreciation for nature since I was a child and where many of my friends became diner for the mosquitoes. Evidence left by the civilizations (Indians)? before me also feed my imagination still today at 66 yrs. of age. I can gather that the information that you pass along comes from your spending so much time in the woods and a thing to envy. While also paying attention to reasonings and behaviors of the life that make up the wonderful natures that we can still share with them. Not to veer too far off of your subject but one can certainly find your information handy at the newly preserved nature walk in Fayette Ga. My old stomping grounds.LOL thanks Doug, for being the Man that you are. .dennis chandler, fayette ga.
Very nice and well-thought out comment. Thank you very much. It's fine to "veer off" from the subject. Actually I think what you are saying is interesting. I'd like to see the nature walk some time. Here thousands of acres are being put into conservation in an ongoing process. Cities and suburbs grow, but it's good to see land preserved.
We are hunters, nester, and gathers by genetic default and it's only in the last hundred years man has been distracted and gotten soft. It's still why people work all year long just to come back to nature for 1 to 3 weeks a year
I’m born and raised in Florida , and everyone talks about our bugs . But most the time I’m okay, but this year I’ve been chewed up and itching like hell .
Wish I could be as chill as you in the woods. I get mosquito bites that are nasty. I get terrible reactions. One hospital trip. Have an epi-pen. I get bites within minutes of just going in my backyard in the city here. They love me.
Beauty Berry is your friend if it grows there. Get a hand full of leaves and crush them, rub them all over. It works. And no awful smell. If not, find a slow part of a creek and dig up some pig mud and rub it on, You'll have a bit of acne, but no bugs. Oh.. the smell isn't good either. Stick with Beauty Berry.
And you’re something else as well insects I’m talking about mosquitoes bite flies. They’re only going by memory here for the most part above 20 feet off the ground you’re not gonna find them so if you have a way to get 20 feet to 30 feet off the ground in the tree and you’re probably gonna get out of range of them
Well I definitely know it's a frame of mind but my frame of mind fell off a long time ago. I'm one of those people who just run screaming into the night because of mosquitoes. I get eaten out like I could be a million people in the room and one mosquito in it. I go home with 12 bites on me.
I know wearing a light colored shirt will deter horseflies too, if I'm wearing a black shirt, horse flies will eat me alive, especially at night. If I have on a white or light gray shirt, and a hat, they won't bother me.
Thank you for the info. Are there any brands you recommend? I'd like to try them and share my experiences with people here. This is why I love YT- You can learn so much from friends here....
@@DougShoeBushcraft I use Clearly Naturals. They have them @ Whole Foods and a chain called Sprouts. They also contain no toxins. www.allstarhealth.com/de_p_ref/54015/bing54015/Clearly_Natural_Glycerin_Bar_Soap_Unscented.htm?msclkid=190d0c9ee48e1fd8b2606ca15d2ad9cb

Mosquitoes are so big in Alaska that they carry off new born eagles to feed their young.

That was a strategy the australian aboriginals used to use to deter mosquitoes and sand flies.

I'm sorry to hear that. I'd wear long sleeves and long pants (of a material bugs can't bite through), a head net, and gloves.
shhhhh, you might wake the skeeders

That might work for where you live. But it doesn't work in East Central Arkansas.

I find a fire is the best repellent. Once established, ever so often throw ground leaves on fire. It has always help.
I agree.
Are you related to the Muskrat?
Nope. I’m related to Troy from swamp people.
Most insects detect mammals by the exhaled carbon dioxide. If you can mask that you become difficult to find.
How would you do that? I know a fire helps a lot, but I think a good part of that is the smell of smoke.
if you stop breathing they can't detect your exhale.....😂😂
